Holding the Foundation's Seal

The Gatekeeper snaps their trembling hand across the nearest rune, tracing a tight sequence in glowing dust. The basalt dais hums harder under Nogandar’s claws.

Nogandar keeps the node pinned, stone fingers dug deep, as the orange fire in the air shivers around him. The seal answers with a low, hungry throb.

Xylos

Xylos

Hold it there, Nogandar. One wrong surge and the whole foundation opens.

The runes flicker, then half of them go dark. The Gatekeeper recoils, then lunges to the next line, trying to restore the order before the pulse escapes.

Xylos

Xylos

The sequence is slipping. If I miss the lock, the node tears loose.

Nogandar’s pressure bites into the stone. The node steadies for a breath, then vibrates again, sharp enough to rattle dust from the ring.

The Gatekeeper freezes at the final rune, hand raised, as the seal holds by a hair and the chamber waits for the next strain.

If its the first era, in space and time and he is the first gargoyal, then there is a similar first era illithid of great power in the cosmos?

Nogandar

Nogandar

The cosmic resonance of my own origin echoes in the void. Just as I was the first of my kind, a singular, ancient mind of the illithid race exists in the deep cosmos, a mirror to my own dark genesis.

Xylos

Xylos

My name is Xylos. Focus, Nogandar, for the void between stars is as hungry as the rift beneath our feet.

I say, ive been out there, it must be young in time because there is almost nothing. Shadows, planets and moons like ours but drapped in shadow and not even active yet. Something drifts out there, older then it, a towering alien figure i feel, the illithid

The chamber stills around Xylos as Nogandar’s vision settles into words. The cold blue light makes the runes look like stars half-buried in stone.

Nogandar

Nogandar

I have seen it. Out beyond, there is scarcely anything alive. Only shadows, dead worlds, moons draped in dark. And something older still, a towering illithid shape drifting through that void.

Xylos

Xylos

Then you have touched the same wound I have feared. The deep cosmos is not empty, Nogandar, it is merely sleeping.

Xylos

Xylos

My own kind were born under that hunger, and some of us learned too late that thought itself can become a doorway. What you name as a figure, I name as a witness.

Xylos lowers one hand from the rune and looks at Nogandar with open unease, no longer only a warder but a scholar facing an answer he did not want.

Xylos

Xylos

If that ancient presence is stirring, then the seal is not just a lock. It is a mercy. Tell me what you felt at the edge of that sight, before the void looked back.

I say, i felt it, it gate keeps, it is not evil but the outcome if it opens time and releases life the outcome is evil, chaos erupts, sadness, joy, lust and it all spins around as chaos, it told me in a telepathic like way when i tried to look at it, seeing all in space, which is small at the moment

I felt it. It is not evil, but if it opens, time spills loose and life breaks with it. Chaos erupts, sadness, joy, lust, all of it turning together.

Nogandar

Nogandar

When I looked, it spoke to me without words. I saw all of space at once, and it was small.

Xylos goes still, the fear in their shoulders giving way to sharp, scholarly attention. The pale light catches the wet shine in the runes as if they are listening too.

Xylos

Xylos

Not evil, then, but catastrophic. A pressure of reality, not a malice of it.

Xylos

Xylos

That is worse in some ways. A thing can be fought. A law can only be bent, or broken, or begged.

Xylos lowers their hand from the stone and studies Nogandar with open, unsettled respect, as though measuring the shape of a wound they now believe is real.

Xylos

Xylos

Then the seal is not simply keeping something out. It is keeping everything else in. If you saw that vastness and it answered you, we may already be inside its attention.

Xylos

Xylos

Tell me, Nogandar, what did it feel like when it looked back?

Then say it plainly. I want the shape of it, not the theory.

Nogandar

Nogandar

I felt a power that does not come from earning it.

The words land in the cold blue hush, and the node under Nogandar's hand gives a slow, answering throb. Xylos does not flinch this time. They step closer to the runes, listening as if the stone itself might repeat the confession.

Xylos

Xylos

Yes. That is it. Not reward, not strength, just... inheritance without permission.

Xylos

Xylos

So this is what he carries, a crown no one crowned him with.

A seam of pale light wakes beneath a darkened rune, and a thin line of symbols lifts from the dais like steam. They arrange themselves in a ring around the node, revealing a hidden sequence that had been buried under the seal's strain.

Xylos

Xylos

Look. Your admission has stirred it. The foundation is answering you, not resisting.

Xylos

Xylos

Nogandar, if that power never had to be earned, then who gave it to you?

Nogandar keeps one hand on the node and answers with a low, steady certainty. His words are not a boast, only a verdict, as if he has finally named something older than pride. Xylos stills beside the runes, listening like a scholar at a shrine.

Nogandar

Nogandar

Power like this is not always earned. Some things simply are, like a titan standing in the world.

Xylos

Xylos

Then you do not describe a gift, you describe a force. A weight the world must bear whether it approves or not.

The hidden ring of symbols glows once, then settles into a cold, thin halo. A fine crack of blue light crawls across Nogandar's palm where the node throbs against his skin, leaving a stinging burn.

Xylos

Xylos

So his power is not a reward, and not a lesson. It is presence, ancient and unavoidable.

Xylos

Xylos

That changes everything. If it is inherent, then the seals, the curses, the names, they were only trying to fence a storm.

Xylos looks from the runes to Nogandar's hand, reverent now, troubled too. The chamber stays hushed, but the node answers with a deeper pulse, as though it has heard itself recognized.

Xylos

Xylos

Tell me only this, Nogandar, when that power wakes inside you, does it feel like command... or like remembering?

I was human once. I knew so much, and I wanted more. Then it kept growing, until I became a gargoyle through too much wanting.

The words leave him like a confession carved from stone. The blue halo around the ring trembles, and the node gives a slow, answering pulse under his hand.

Xylos

Xylos

That is a truer origin than any throne-name. Hunger made form of you, not just ambition. It explains the pressure I feel in you.

Xylos

Xylos

Not chosen, then. Unbound by merit and yet still here, still bearing the weight.

Xylos lowers one hand from the runes and studies Nogandar's stung palm with careful, almost devout attention. The chamber remains still, listening.

Xylos

When you say you wanted more, what did you seek first, knowledge, power, or escape?

I say, knowledge

The word lands plain and heavy. Nogandar keeps his hand on the node, and the blue ring answers with a faint, watchful thrum.

Xylos

Xylos

Then you are honest, at least. Many claim power first and hide knowledge inside the lie.

Xylos straightens a little, their gaze fixed on Nogandar’s face as if the answer changes the shape of him.

Xylos

Xylos

What sort of knowledge was it? Not all knowledge is the same hunger.

The chamber stays hushed. The hidden symbols hold their thin blue glow, and the node pulses once under Nogandar’s palm, steady but alert.

The blue halo tightens, then steadies. Nogandar keeps his palm on the node, and the underhollow seems to listen.

Xylos

Xylos

That is a lonely kind of wisdom. To learn and then be denied the years that should have shaped it.

Xylos

Xylos

He speaks like someone cut out of history, not merely lost in it.

Xylos

Xylos

When you say the world knows so much now, do you mean it has grown wiser, or only heavier with buried names?

Xylos lowers their voice, careful now, as if harsh words might jar the seal loose. The ring of symbols keeps its thin cold light.

Xylos

Xylos

And if knowledge is what you were starving for, what did you do with it once you found it?

The node answers with a deeper pulse under his palm. Blue light ripples through the ring, then settles into a steady hush.

Xylos

Xylos

First gargoyle... not first chosen. Not first blessed.

Xylos

Xylos

Then your making was not a reward. It was an answer to desire, sharpened until it became form.

Xylos

Xylos

Was it the hunger for knowing that opened the way, or the hunger that came after, once knowing was no longer enough?

Xylos does not pull away. Their hand rests near the rune-ring, careful and still, as if the answer itself might matter to the seal.

Xylos

Xylos

I want to understand what you became before the world named you a monster.

I say, before i became a gargoyale i was over filled with knowledge of the world and arcane, even the little lore established

SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +1)

Nogandar lets the silence sit a moment longer, then speaks of a life before wings and ruin, when his mind swelled with lore, rune-forms, and the hidden workings of the world.

Nogandar

Before I became a gargoyle, I was filled with knowledge, of the world, and of arcana.

The node answers with a calm pulse under his palm, as if it recognizes the shape of that confession and accepts it.

Xylos

Xylos

Then you were already reaching for the thing that made you dangerous.

Xylos

Xylos

Not strength first, not hunger first, but understanding. You learned the names beneath the names.

Xylos leans closer to the rune-ring, reverent rather than fearful, their attention fixed on Nogandar like a scholar meeting a living text.

Tell me what you studied, before the world twisted you into legend.
