Ambush in the Copper-Vein Mine

The acrid smoke clings to the cavern walls, dancing in the sickly violet glow cast by an approaching lantern. A hooded figure steps into the chamber, his boots crunching against copper coins glued to the stone by webs. He freezes, his breath hitching as he beholds the gargoyle.

Hooded Cultist

Hooded Cultist

A stone demon! It has slaughtered the Weaver's kin! Hahd, Vahn, fall upon it before it recovers its breath!

Hooded Cultist

Hooded Cultist

If I can mark this brute for the Queen, my standing in the web will be assured. My blade must find the gaps in his granite hide.

Nogandar

Nogandar

You bring the scent of your mistress into this place, little insect. Your Queen’s reach is long, but her grasp is brittle.

Nogandar

Nogandar

Another of Eulstria’s wretched puppets. I will grind his violet light into the dust and feed his essence to the dark.

Nogandar shifts his weight, his heavy claws digging into the stone floor as he prepares to lunge through the haze.

I use stealth to ambush them with a flame breath

Nogandar stumbles, his throat constricting as the volatile gases of the mine ignite prematurely. Instead of a focused inferno, a ragged puff of soot and sparks erupts from his maw, revealing his position in the shadows. The cultist shouts, his blade flashing as he lunges toward the gargoyle, abandoning his caution for a strike aimed at the stone chest.

Hooded Cultist

Hooded Cultist

He is blind! Strike now, brothers! The Weaver favors our steel today!

Hooded Cultist

Hooded Cultist

His fire is spent. This hulking relic is vulnerable. I will carve my name into his hide and earn the Queen's favor.

Nogandar

Nogandar

My focus faltered. The air in this tomb is heavy with deceit. I must recover before this pup finds a vital joint.

The cultist lunges, his serrated blade aiming for the gap between Nogandar's shoulder plates. Nearby, the beggar whimpers, scrambling toward a crawlspace as the chaotic flare of Nogandar's failed blast illuminates the jagged cavern walls. The gargoyle braces his massive, clawed hands to parry the incoming steel.

I rake them with wide claw strikes

Nogandar pivots on his heel, his stone-wrought muscles coiled like tightly wound springs. As the cultist's blade descends, Nogandar swings a massive, taloned hand in a wide, whistling arc. The jagged copper-tinged air shudders as his claws intercept the cultist, not merely deflecting the steel, but tearing through the thin fabric of the man's tunic with the force of a landslide.

Nogandar

Nogandar

The Weaver's puppets break as easily as sun-baked clay.

The cultist is sent sprawling, his weapon spinning uselessly into the darkness of a side tunnel, his frantic momentum halted by the sheer weight of the gargoyle's counter-blow.

Beggar

Beggar

No! You are all going to die! Please, the shadows are moving!

The beggar points toward the ceiling, where the shimmering silk webs are beginning to pulse with a rhythmic, sickening violet light. A heavy, chittering sound emanates from the depths of the mine, suggesting that the cultist was merely the herald of something far larger.

I cast a door and leave

Nogandar thrusts his heavy claws against the stone wall, channeling his arcanum to tear a rift in reality, seeking to step through to the surface. The air shimmers, but the corruption of the spider queen is too potent, the weave of magic here thick with foul webbing. His fingers only scrape uselessly against the cold, unyielding rock, and the portal flickers out before it can even form.

Nogandar

Nogandar

The Weaver has bound this place tight. There is no easy exit, only the descent into the abyss.

Beggar

Beggar

It is too late! She is here!

The violet pulse from the webs reaches a blinding crescendo. From the ceiling, a mass of segmented legs detaches, descending with the sound of snapping cables. The rock wall behind the cultist buckles inward, crushed by a weight that makes the very cavern walls weep dust. Nogandar stands exposed, his failed magic leaving him vulnerable as the shadow of the Queen’s brood falls over him.

Nogandar bellows a primal, rhythmic incantation that vibrates through the very marrow of his stone bones. His muscular frame loses its rigidity, the granite skin softening into a viscous, shifting tide of gray sludge. As the creature of the brood descends, its fangs dripping with paralytic ichor, Nogandar liquefies into the cavern floor.

Nogandar

Nogandar

The stone is old, ancient as my own awakening. It welcomes me home, away from these spindly, chittering abominations.

The gargoyle sinks into the bedrock just as the heavy, chitinous legs of the beast strike the earth where he stood a heartbeat before. The impact shatters the floor into a cloud of sharp flint and dust. Through the shifting minerals of the wall, Nogandar senses the beggar scrambling, paralyzed by the sheer, suffocating presence of the spider-thing. The creature screeches, a sound of grating metal, as it realizes its prey has dissolved into the very architecture of the mine.

Within the stone walls, Nogandar moves like a phantom tide. He pushes through the solid granite, his consciousness stretching into the dark veins of ore. The tremors of the brood-thing shaking the cavern above provide perfect cover for his rhythmic, fluid pulses through the rock.

Nogandar

Nogandar

The beggar still trembles behind the stack of support beams. If the creature senses my trajectory, he is as good as dead. I must slip past him and pull him into the wall, or leave him to the spider queen.

Nogandar senses the beggar’s frantic, erratic heartbeat as the gargoyle edges closer to the terrified man's position. Above them, the spider-thing tears at the ceiling, spraying the floor with stone shrapnel and violet webbing. The gargoyle breaches the surface momentarily, a hand of gray sludge reaching toward the beggar’s cloak to drag him into the safety of the earth.

I abandon saving him and continue fleeing through the ground, lord pooril shows no mercy

SUCCESS (Good Stealth, rolled +1)

Ambush in the Copper-Vein Mine

The gargoyle’s fingers brush the rough fabric of the beggar’s cloak, but he withdraws his reach just as his talons begin to phase into the granite.

He remembers the cold indifference of his ancient master.

Nogandar

Nogandar

Mercy is a weakness that rots the soul.

Nogandar

Nogandar

Let the weaver’s pet have him. My oath is to the ruins of the past, not to the insects scurrying through these mines. I am the shadow that endures, not the shield that breaks.

Nogandar abandons the mortal to his fate, his massive stone form dissolving into the floor like ink dropped in a stream. He pulses deeper into the bedrock, abandoning the chamber entirely. Above, a piercing shriek echoes against the cavern walls as the brood-creature’s massive limbs smash through the wooden support beams, bringing the ceiling down upon the wailing man. Nogandar is already thirty feet deep within the mountain, moving toward the lower tunnels with silent, tectonic resolve.
