By noon, the lane widens into a river ford lined with leaning stones and pale reeds. Mud gleams under the sun, and a bent milestone marks the crossing. Beyond it waits a tiny toll hut with a sagging roof and a red flag hanging limp in the still air.
Butch leads the trio down the bank as water murmurs over stone. Sable slows, scanning the far treeline. Brin shifts their pack higher and keeps close, armor plates clinking softly with each step.

Sable
A crossing like this draws eyes. Stay near, both of you.

Butch the Wereboar
The ford is shallow, but the bank looks slick.
A hooded tollkeeper steps from the hut, one hand on a long staff. He studies Butch first, then the road, as if weighing how much trouble this crossing might cost him.

The Tollkeeper
Crossing fee. One copper for foot traffic, more if you mean to bring beasts through.
Brin pauses at Butch’s side, chin lifting with quiet pride. Sable’s gaze stays fixed on the tollkeeper, already measuring the man’s nerve.
✓ Quest Accepted
Cross the river ford
“I step forward to shield Brin and Sable, keeping my eyes on the tollkeeper and asking, what if we wish to pass without paying”
SUCCESS (Legendary Intimidation, rolled +1)

Butch steps ahead of Brin and Sable, planting himself between them and the tollkeeper. His shadow swallows the shallower bank, and the water keeps whispering at the stones.

Butch the Wereboar
What if we wish to pass without paying?
The tollkeeper’s staff dips a finger’s width. He studies Butch, then lets out a thin breath through his nose, as if deciding the shape of the answer.

The Tollkeeper
Then you had best have a reason better than stubborn feet. I can be fair, but I am not free.

Sable
He is teaching you the road already, Brin. Watch what he counts, and what he lets stand.

Brin
If Butch speaks like that, maybe the road listens.
The tollkeeper’s gaze flicks from Brin’s pack to the ford, then back to Butch. The moment stretches, not hostile, just waiting for the next cost to be named.
“I ask Brin to harness his power of the shadows with me so we may show the tollkeeper what our family is capable of and offer him protection from bandits in place of coin”
SUCCESS (Legendary Intimidation, rolled -1)

Butch the Wereboar
Brin, lend me your shadow with mine. Let him see what our family can do, and let him know bandits cost more than coin.
Brin straightens beside Butch, pride settling into something harder. The air at their feet deepens, and the shade between the stones seems to gather itself around them.

Brin
I can do that. Show me where to stand.
Butch and Brin match their footing, shoulder to shoulder, and the riverbank darkens under their joined silhouettes. The tollkeeper’s grip tightens on his staff.

The Tollkeeper
...Bandits are a real enough toll. If your steel and shadow are honest, that has weight.
Sable’s eyes stay on Brin, not the man with the staff, as if measuring whether the child holds the line or flinches from the ask.

Sable
He is asking you to stand beside him, Brin. Not behind him.
Brin draws a breath, squares their shoulders, and keeps the dark wrapped around their feet without breaking shape. The tollkeeper lowers his staff a little and waits for the offer to be named in full.
“"Then accept these shodow sentries as your gaurds and ket us pass" i say as i create perfect copies of myself, Sable and Brin out of the shadows and offer them as gaurds to the keeper”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +3)

Butch the Wereboar
Then take these shadow sentries as your guards, and let us pass.
Butch spreads his stance wide, and the shared dark at his feet rises in three clean shapes.
They stand with his bulk, Brin’s posture, and Sable’s stillness, silent copies cut from the ford’s shadow.
The tollkeeper leans in, staff angled low, studying the copies like coin he can weigh.

The Tollkeeper
Useful work. A bridge watched by three shadows is worth more than a purse of copper.

Sable
Brin, look at them. Not perfect shapes, just discipline made visible.
Brin’s rigid stance loosens a breath, then firms again as one shadow copy turns its head exactly when the real child does.
The tollkeeper steps aside and points to the ford, granting passage while his gaze lingers on the borrowed shadows.
“The family leaves the shadows to gaurd and pass on through towards their goal”
SUCCESS (Superb Athletics, rolled +0)

Butch leads, and the others follow into the ford. The shadow sentries peel away from their feet and remain behind at the waterline, still and watchful.
The river takes their boots at once, cold and fast, but the crossing holds. Brin keeps their chin up as spray bites their face.
Sable steps in close behind Brin, one hand ready at the child’s shoulder if the current jolts them. The tollkeeper does not stop them, only watches them go.

Brin
The ford is harder than the yard.

Sable
Good. Let the road be harder. Keep your feet under you.
Brin adjusts at once, stance still a little rigid, but steady enough to keep moving. The far bank rises ahead, open and waiting.
