The Tollkeeper's Final Demand

The Tollkeeper steps clear of a fissure as stone dust rains around him, utterly calm beneath the shaking ceiling. He raises one hand toward Butch, palm open, and the cavern seems to listen.

The price for leaving is not gold. It is far higher, and the bill is due now.

Sable shifts beside Butch, sword half-raised, eyes flicking from the Tollkeeper to the widening cracks above. Brin braces against a slab of fallen stone, breathing hard, watching for the next collapse.

The fissure behind him is still open.

Pay me, or the passage takes you. Either way, the mountain collects.

A jagged groan rolls through the chamber. Dust pours from the ceiling in sheets, and the narrowing passage behind the party pinches tighter, choking on fresh rubble as the Tollkeeper keeps his hand extended, waiting.

Get past the Tollkeeper

I harness my powers and command the mirror shadow to sacrifice itself and split its power between me, Sable and Brin, empowering all 3 of us even further, aswell as darkening and strengthening Sable and Brin's figures so they match my shadow demi-god esthetic

The Tollkeeper's Final Demand

Butch plants his feet and reaches into the broken dark of the fallen mirror-shadow. The chamber hushes around the motion, as if the collapse itself is holding breath.

Its power is still here.

Shadow threads peel free and coil around Butch, then split outward in three hard pulses. One floods into him, one wraps Sable, one sinks into Brin.

Sable's outline deepens, her armor and cloak drinking in the black sheen. Brin straightens with a sharp gasp, their stance darkening into the same fierce, demi-god silhouette as Butch.

The Tollkeeper

The Tollkeeper

A costly choice. The mountain keeps its fee, and you keep moving.

The mirror-shadow shudders once, then goes still and dimmer than ash. A slab crashes somewhere behind them, sealing more of the passage and kicking a knife of dust through the air.

As a family, me Sable and Brin all charge forward and attack the tollkeeper in a flurry of deadly attacks

The Tollkeeper's Final Demand

Butch surges first, and the others follow his lead. The cavern erupts into motion as the trio closes the distance in a single brutal rush.

Sable cuts in from the left, sword flashing through the dust. Brin drives hard beside her, shadow-bright and low, while the Tollkeeper’s stance shifts from measured to sudden defense.

Butch crashes into the center of the exchange with a killing sweep, turning the guardian’s line as stone chips spray from the wall.

That will cost you more than gold.

The tollkeeper is forced back, boots skidding through dust toward the fissure. His arm lifts to guard, but the formation is already broken.

Behind them, the tunnel gives another grinding groan as rubble settles into a harsher seal. The air turns thick enough to choke on.

For one hard beat, the way out belongs to Butch and his family, and the guardian is driven off his line.

Butch grabs the keeper by the throat and moves him out of the way as he yells for his family to escape quickly

Butch clamps one thick hand around the Tollkeeper’s throat and hauls him sideways, clearing the line to the fissure.

Move. Go now!

Sable and Brin snap into the opening at once, boots skidding through dust as the rubble groans behind them.

The Tollkeeper

The Tollkeeper

A heavy price, then. So be it.

The guardian staggers against the wall, one hand at Butch’s wrist, but the shove has already taken him off the exit line.

Fresh stone grinds loose above the passage, and the gap beyond the Tollkeeper shows daylight thin as a blade.

Butch, the way is opening!
