A Moment of Uneasy Stillness

The cavern settles into a thin, uneasy hush. The corruption still glows ahead, but its pulse has softened enough to let the dark breathe.

Brin stands with their weapon half-raised, then lowers it a little. Their grip trembles before they force their fingers to close again.

Brin

Brin

Keep hold. Just keep hold.

Sable

Sable

Good. Do not fight the shaking, just outlast it.

Sable eases closer to Brin, not crowding them, only steadying the space between them. Her attention stays sharp, but her posture softens by a fraction.

Butch stands nearby in the black stone, vast and still, while the cavern’s sickly light licks over his tusks and scars. The silence between heartbeats feels almost like a campfire pause.

Brin

Brin

It feels different this close. Like it knows I am trying.

The three of them hold there for a moment, listening to the low hum and each other’s breathing, with nothing to do but gather themselves.

I gently take hold of Brin's injured wrist and use my shadow magic to patch up the injury do it's stronger than before

SUCCESS (Fair Crafting, rolled +3)

A Moment of Uneasy Stillness

Butch takes Brin’s injured wrist in one huge, careful hand. Shadow gathers between his fingers, dark as river silt, and settles over the strain in the joint.

The pain eases out of Brin’s face. The wrist straightens under the black veil, then firms with a hard, clean strength.

A faint web of shadow tracery remains beneath the skin, like a hidden brace. Brin flexes once, then again, testing it.

Brin

Brin

It is better. Stronger, too.

Sable

Sable

Good work. That is the sort of repair that keeps a fighter alive.

Brin looks up at Butch with fresh focus, then glances toward the pulsing dark ahead. Their restored grip tightens around the weapon.

Brin

Brin

I can hold it now. Show me what comes next.

I press onward toward the dark pulse

SUCCESS (Superb Athletics, rolled -1)

A Moment of Uneasy Stillness

Butch releases Brin’s wrist and steps forward, heavy feet muffled by the cavern floor. The healed joint holds as Brin falls in beside him, weapon ready.

The stillness breaks under their movement, not with a roar but with a low, enclosing throb from deeper within the rock. Shadowed walls swallow the light behind them.

Sable closes the line behind Brin, chin lifted, eyes tracking the dark ahead. She keeps pace without wasting a word.

Brin

Brin

The brace holds. I can keep my grip.

Ahead, the cavern opens around a wet seam of blackness, and the corruption’s pulse gathers there like a heartbeat with a source.

Butch reaches the threshold of that seam with the party tight behind him, the dark line from the ford echoing in the stone. The air waits, tense and listening.

I ask Brin if the brace feels steady

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

A Moment of Uneasy Stillness
Butch the Wereboar

Butch the Wereboar

Brin, does that brace feel steady?

Brin

Brin

Yes. It holds clean. I can trust it.

Brin

Brin

The shadow under the skin sits warm and firm, not loose. The wrist answers when I turn it.

Sable

Sable

Good. Then keep using it. A thing that holds under strain teaches faster than a thing that never bends.

Brin

Brin

I will. I want to know where my balance ends and my shifting begins.

Brin tests the wrist once more, then squares their shoulders beside Butch. The black seam ahead keeps pulsing, but they do not flinch from it.

Brin

Brin

If it fails later, tell me now, not after it matters.

Sable gives a small, approving nod, and the three of them stand together at the threshold, held by the same quiet decision to go on.

I press deeper toward the corruption seam

SUCCESS (Superb Athletics, rolled +1)

A Moment of Uneasy Stillness

Butch takes the lead and moves first, carving a path toward the wet seam. The corridor narrows around him, and the others follow without a word.

Butch the Wereboar

Butch the Wereboar

The seam is pulling the light inward.

Sable

Sable

Keep your feet under you, Brin. Match his pace, not your nerves.

Brin

Brin

I can do that. The wrist is steady.

Brin steps in beside Butch, testing the shadow brace with every stride. Sable falls in behind them, eyes fixed on the black seam ahead.

The party reaches the seam itself. The rock is split open with cold wet darkness, and the pulse answers from just beyond it.

As Butch presses to the edge, the shadow in Brin’s wrist tightens and steadies, holding firm under the strain. The passage is open now, but whatever waits beyond it remains unseen.

I press through the seam

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

A Moment of Uneasy Stillness

Butch presses into the split seam, and the cold wet dark swallows his outline at once. The pulse does not push him back, it folds around him, as if making room.

Butch the Wereboar

Butch the Wereboar

The seam opens wider than it looks.

Brin follows half a step behind, braced wrist held tight, watching Butch vanish into the black as if measuring the path by his shoulders.

Sable

Sable

Brin, keep that arm close. If it starts to slip, you tell us at once.

Brin

Brin

I will. But it is holding.

The passage yields all at once. Butch comes through the seam and into a deeper chamber, where the darkness ahead carries the same ugly pulse as the line beyond the ford.

Brin steps through after him, and Sable follows, but the answer is already waiting in the black ahead, plain now and impossible to mistake.

I tell Brin to stay close and watch my flank

SUCCESS (Legendary Intimidation, rolled +0)

A Moment of Uneasy Stillness
Butch the Wereboar

Butch the Wereboar

Brin, stay close. Watch my flank.

Brin

Brin

Understood. I am with you.

Brin

Brin

The brace in my wrist holds. I can do this.

Sable

Sable

Good. Keep your eyes on Butch, and on the dark beside him.

Brin shifts in behind Butch at once, not crowding him, just close enough to cover the opening at his side. The wet stone drinks the chamber's sour glimmer while the pulse ahead thumps once, low and patient.

Brin

Brin

If it reaches for us, I will see it first.

Sable lets out a slow breath, her posture easing a fraction as she watches Brin settle into the guard. The three of them hold in the chamber's damp hush, with the black seam waiting beyond them.

I advance toward the black seam

SUCCESS (Superb Athletics, rolled -2)

A Moment of Uneasy Stillness

Butch advances, each step careful on the slick stone, and the chamber gives him a sour, wet chill as he reaches the seam.

Butch the Wereboar

Butch the Wereboar

The black opening is wider now.

His boot scrapes a ridge in the floor, loud in the hush, and a smear of damp darks the toe.

Brin

Brin

I have your flank. My wrist holds.

Sable lifts her chin from the rear, eyes narrowing at the seam as Butch reaches its edge, the pulse beyond it thumping through the stone.

Sable

Sable

Good. Keep moving, but watch the dark.

Butch gets there, at the threshold at last, and the sour glimmer crawls over his axe and tusks. The wet wall seems to breathe around him.

A faint grit of black dust falls from the seam onto his forearm, and the air tightens, waiting for what he does next.

I step into the seam

SUCCESS (Superb Athletics, rolled -3)

A Moment of Uneasy Stillness

Butch steps through the seam, and the chamber accepts him with a cold, wet sigh. The sour glimmer washes over his tusks and axe, then clings behind him like a stain.

Butch the Wereboar

Butch the Wereboar

The seam is real, not just light.

Black dust sloughs from his shoulder as he clears the threshold, and the pulse in the stone shudders once, harder than before.

Brin

Brin

You made it through. I am right behind you.

Brin shifts up to the opening, wrist tight to their chest, while Sable’s gaze sharpens on the dark line etched deeper in the chamber wall.

Sable

Sable

Good. Now we know it can be crossed. Keep that wrist steady, Brin.

The wet stone gleams around them, and the seam’s pulse answers Butch’s passage with a low, hungry throb.

I press deeper toward the corruption

SUCCESS (Superb Athletics, rolled -2)

A Moment of Uneasy Stillness

Butch pushes past the seam’s lip and the chamber opens around him, wider than the narrow cut suggested. The black pulse runs across the floor ahead, and the wet stone gives under his boots with a slick, stubborn resistance.

Butch the Wereboar

Butch the Wereboar

The seam widens into a path.

His shoulder brushes the sour dark, and a fresh smear of grit sticks to his skin and fur. The contact costs him, but it does not stop him.

Brin

Brin

I see the route now. I can keep up.

Brin steps through behind him, then checks their healed wrist against the strain, jaw set despite the lingering ache. Sable moves in after them, eyes fixed on the black line as if reading a wound in the mountain.

Sable

Sable

Good. Then we keep moving, and we do not let it dictate our pace.

The chamber gives a low shudder, and the pulse in the stone answers Butch’s advance by spreading along the floor in a clear, opened track toward the deeper dark.

I press deeper into the corruption

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -3)

A Moment of Uneasy Stillness

Butch pushes deeper, and the black track gives way under his weight like a scar opening. The chamber answers with a dull, living throb, as if it recognizes him.

Butch the Wereboar

Butch the Wereboar

The corruption is here.

A pulse of sour cold bites his shoulder where the grit touched him, and the shadow at his feet tugs forward against him. He keeps going anyway.

Brin

Brin

I can still hold this. My wrist is steady.

Brin steps in behind him, then winces as the healed wrist flexes under the cavern’s pressure. The faint shadow tracery beneath their skin darkens for a breath, then settles.

Sable

Sable

Good. Keep your line, Brin. Butch, the seam is reacting to you.

Butch reaches the source at last, where the track knots into a dark seam in the stone. The chamber shifts around it, and the way back feels smaller than before.
