A Welcome at the Harbor Café

Under the harbor awnings, a small café is opening toward the boats. Two empty tables face the water, and a handwritten menu leans against the door beside a row of potted herbs.

A young adult woman unlocks the café. She has a sturdy build, warm brown skin, dark curls tucked beneath a green scarf, and a mustard cardigan over rolled sleeves. A chipped blue mug hangs from one hand.

Morning. You’re welcome to come in, though I’m still pretending this place is ready for customers.

I’m Nia Bell, by the way. I don’t think I’ve seen you around here before.

She props the door open with the mug and glances toward the water. Beyond the awnings, temporary fencing blocks the nearest stretch of beach.

For the shoreline repairs, follow the harbor boardwalk past the bait shop, then take the ramp by the old ferry office. It’s the easiest route around.

Are you visiting for the summer, or are you looking for somewhere to stay?

I’m staying with my Uncle Scott. He runs the scuba diving shop. I only arrived late last night, and we haven’t really spoken much yet.

Nia’s easy smile pauses, then returns with a thoughtful tilt of her head. She sets the chipped mug on the counter and studies Jules with renewed interest.

Scott runs that little shop by the marina, right? I know him by sight, though I haven’t seen him this week.

She glances toward the fenced shoreline, where a work crew’s signs flutter beyond the harbor sheds. The café remains quiet except for the kettle beginning to murmur.

Then you’ve got a good excuse. But do me a favor and tell him the repairs are shifting customers around. I’d rather he hear it from someone he knows.

Nia reaches beneath the counter and brings out a clean menu, setting it beside the doorway. Her welcome is genuine, but Jules now carries a small message back to Scott.
