Jules wakes before the town is fully awake, the early light turning her room’s walls pale gold. Through the open window, cool air carries the faint smell of coffee and pavement after rain.
She dresses and steps outside, finding the neighborhood quiet beneath long blue shadows. Storefronts remain dark, porch lights blink out one by one, and a bakery’s first delivery van hums down the street.

Jules
The beach must be close by.
The street slopes gently toward the town center. Hand-painted signs point toward the library, market square, and waterfront, while yesterday’s event posters overlap on a community noticeboard.
At the square, metal chairs sit upside down on café tables. A florist unlocks a narrow shop, and the first bus sighs to a stop beside a shelter painted with local murals.
Beyond the buildings, the horizon brightens from lavender to amber. The town slowly gathers its sounds around Jules, leaving her the open morning and several possible directions.

“I follow the signs to the beach”
FAILURE (Good Reasoning, rolled -2)

Jules follows the small blue beach arrows past the bus shelter and along two quieter blocks. The pavement narrows beside hedges, and the town’s morning sounds soften behind her.
At the next corner, the arrows split: one points toward a chain-link gate marked BEACH ACCESS, while another leads downhill toward the harbor. Jules takes the beach route.
The gate is closed with a simple notice: shoreline repairs, access redirected until further notice. Beyond it, pale sand and bright water remain visible between the bars.

Jules
The beach is right there, but this entrance is closed.
She reads the notice more carefully. A hand-drawn map sends pedestrians toward the harbor, where a public boardwalk reaches the far side of the construction area.
Jules turns downhill instead of retracing her steps. Between rooftops, the harbor opens into view, crowded with small boats and striped awnings beginning to lift in the breeze.
The beach remains out of reach for now, but the boardwalk offers a clear alternate route, and the water is close enough to hear against the pilings.
