Four days beyond Harrowmere, the party follows a forest road beneath damp green branches. Octavius forages just beyond the road’s edge, bow nocked across his palm, while Patter noses through fern and leaf litter.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

Octavius! Come quickly. There is blood here, and the trail is not empty by accident.

The shout carries sharply through the trees. Octavius abandons the forage and hurries toward the road, bow still nocked but not drawn, Patter bounding close behind.

Edrin stands beside blood-darkened leaves, a broken pack strap, and earth churned beside the trail. Mara and Guard Tessa hold position several paces away, watching the silent forest beyond.

Guard Tessa

Guard Tessa

No one has shown themselves. We have not touched the strap or disturbed the ground further.

Mara Venn

The leaves are fresh enough to matter, but the road remains quiet. Whatever happened, it ended before we arrived.

Patter stops at Octavius’s side, ears angled toward the trees. Ahead, the road bends beneath shadowed branches, offering no movement, no voices, and no explanation for the violence marked at its edge.

✓ Quest Accepted

Determine whether the perpetrators remain nearby

“Lady Tessa, would you like to investigate while I keep an eye on the road, or would you prefer I take a closer look while you make sure our company isn't taken by surprise? You speak for the Reeve, and I'm not sure yet what you're most comfortable with... But I do know forests like these well enough to track this- Whoever this came from could not have gone far after spilling this much blood.”

Lady Tessa, would you investigate while I watch the road, or would you rather I take the trail while you guard our company? You speak for the Reeve, and I know these forests well enough to track whoever spilled this much blood.

Guard Tessa

Guard Tessa

Take the trail, Octavius. I will keep Edrin, Mara, and Patter covered, and I will call if the road gives us trouble.

Octavius lowers his bow and studies the disturbed leaves without touching them. The blood drops narrow toward the trees, while a heel mark and a broken fern show someone limped away under haste.

Octavius

Octavius

The trail is fresh, and the blood came from a person moving alone.

He follows the signs fifty paces into the forest, finding a torn dark cloak snagged on bramble and a shallow hollow where its wearer paused. The blood trail continues east, lighter now, toward the ravine.

Octavius returns to the road with the direction fixed and the evidence undisturbed. Tessa has kept the party secure; Mara and Edrin remain untouched by surprise, while Patter watches the trees at her side.

“I believe it's one alone. And if they're alive, they're grievously injured..." My expression plainly shows that while I will leave if pressed, I will protest heavily. "May I take some bandages in case they are still alive, and..." I find it hard to voice comfortably but have to press past that for this wounded persons sake, "and something to bring a swift and painless end if they are beyond saving..”

I believe it is one alone. If they are alive, they are grievously injured. May I take bandages, and something to bring a swift, painless end if they are beyond saving?

Guard Tessa

Guard Tessa

Take the bandages. Keep your knife sheathed unless mercy truly becomes the only kindness left. I will guard the others and call if anything approaches.

Tessa passes him a wrapped roll of linen from the travel stores. Octavius enters the forest again, following the thinning blood trail east while Patter stays with the guarded party.

The trail ends beneath a leaning ash. A young adult man, a lean human with a narrow face and a frayed gray tunic beneath, lies in the leaves, one hand pressed to his side, his dark cloak torn and his face pale beneath cropped brown hair.

Savin

Savin

Please. I am still here. Do not leave me.

Octavius kneels, checks the wound, and binds it firmly with the linen. The bleeding slows under his practiced hands, and the stranger’s breathing steadies instead of failing.

When Octavius finishes, the wounded man can be moved with care. His life is no longer immediately slipping away, and the knife remains safely sheathed at Octavius’s belt.

“Breathe, brother." I don't know this man, nor does it matter. Right now, I want to avoid his death almost as much as he does. "I'm not certain I can carry you alone, but can you trust me to bring someone who will help us get you to our cart?”

Octavius

Breathe, brother. I do not know you, and it does not matter. I want to keep you alive almost as much as you do. I am not certain I can carry you alone, but can you trust me to bring someone who will help us reach our cart?

Savin

Savin

Yes. I can trust that. Bring them quickly, and I will do as you say.

The wounded stranger keeps his hand pressed to the bandage and meets Octavius’s gaze without flinching. Consent replaces panic, giving the rescue a clear shape.

Octavius

Octavius

Guard Tessa! He is alive and willing to be moved. Bring the others and a way to carry him carefully.

Octavius stays beside the stranger, one hand steady near the dressing without pressing it. His voice carries through the trees toward the road, while the injured man watches him with exhausted trust.

Guard Tessa

Guard Tessa

I heard you. Hold his side steady and keep him still. We will bring the cart close and move him together.

Tessa’s answer comes with the first rustle of returning footsteps. The stranger closes his eyes briefly, still conscious, while Octavius remains at his side and the promised help reaches them.

Determine whether the perpetrators remain nearby

“I'm sorry," I apologize, trying to put him at ease with an embarassed laugh like I'm the one who is imposing on him. "I didn't introduce myself... Please, call me Octavius. May I ask your name?”

I'm sorry. I did not introduce myself. Please, call me Octavius. May I ask your name?

Octavius offers the apology with an embarrassed laugh, making himself the awkward one in the exchange. The wounded man’s guarded expression eases as Tessa’s approaching footsteps draw nearer.

Savin

Savin

Savin. My name is Savin. Thank you for staying, Octavius. I thought I would be left beneath that tree.

The name comes without resistance, and the stranger’s shoulders loosen against the ash’s roots. He keeps one hand over the bandage while the other opens briefly in trust.

Guard Tessa

We are here. Mara and Edrin have the cart ready, and we will move you carefully, Savin.

Tessa kneels beside Savin and checks Octavius’s binding without disturbing it. Behind her, Mara steadies the cart while Edrin brings the padded bedroll forward.

Savin

Savin

I will do as you say. I am Savin, and I would rather owe my life to a named man than vanish as an unnamed burden in the woods.

“What happened to you, Savin?" I ask, standing to help Tessa lift Savin without dislodging the bandages. If he is this grievously injured, there are few endings worse than a perforated bowel or stomach... Until we get him to a real medic, we have no idea what kind of movement or bump could weaken him past return. "Do we need to fear an ambush?”

What happened to you, Savin? Do we need to fear an ambush? Until we reach a proper medic, we must move you as carefully as we can.

Octavius rises and takes position beside Tessa, supporting Savin’s shoulders while she steadies his wounded side. They lift him together, keeping the bandages undisturbed.

Savin

Savin

Three masked men came out of the trees behind me. They wanted the satchel, but I ran when one of them drew steel.

Savin’s breath catches during the first step, but Tessa adjusts her hold before the movement worsens it. Mara clears the path while Edrin brings the cart close.

Savin

Savin

They did not follow me. I heard them arguing near the ash, then moving west toward the lower ground. I saw no second party waiting on the road.

The party reaches the cart without signs of pursuit. Tessa keeps Savin supported as they lower him onto the padded bedroll, while Octavius watches the forest and the empty bend beyond it.

No ambush now, then, but the attackers may still be nearby. We will leave together, keep the road watched, and find a medic before moving him farther than necessary.
