The walk ends beneath Reeve Anja Vey’s office awning. Mara and Edrin remain beside Octavius, Patter close to his boots, as Guard Tessa emerges with the intercepted summons held carefully by its edges.

Guard Tessa
The seal appears to imitate this office’s authority, but the wording is wrong in one place. I had the document kept dry and untouched after finding it.
Anja summons the courier from within. The young man arrives pale and rain-damp, carrying a delivery ledger under one arm; he stops short when he sees Mara and Edrin unharmed.

Reeve Anja Vey
Compare the seal, the exact wording, and your delivery record. Tell us what left official custody, and what did not.

The Courier
The authorizing source is the Protected Travel Office, under my seal route. I carried the genuine summons to the gatehouse at first bell, and the ledger records its wording exactly.
He compares the intercepted paper with his ledger and the office seal. The marks match closely, but a line ordering immediate relocation was added in a different hand after the summons left his custody.

Reeve Anja Vey
Then the source is genuine, but the command was altered afterward. Someone intercepted an official summons and sharpened it into an abduction order. We will find where that alteration entered the chain.
“Lady Reeve, I apologize for any offense given, but I have to point out that my friends are not safe here. Twice we have tried your way to protect them, and twice they've nearly been killed because of it. May I ask you for something completely outlandish that I think may close this breach for all?”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Octavius
Lady Reeve, I apologize for any offense, but my friends are not safe here. Twice we have tried your way to protect them, and twice they have nearly been killed because of it. May I ask for something completely outlandish, something that may close this breach for all?
Anja studies Octavius in the rain-muted awning, then looks to Mara and Edrin. Tessa keeps the altered summons raised while the courier waits beside the office door.

Reeve Anja Vey
No offense is given. You have shown me a breach, and your friends have borne its danger. Ask plainly, and I will hear the outlandish thing before deciding whether Dunmere can lawfully attempt it.
Mara’s guarded expression eases, though she keeps one hand near the sealed packet. Edrin watches Anja steadily, giving Octavius the room he requested rather than answering for him.

Guard Tessa
The request is granted, Octavius. Whatever you propose, say it while the evidence and the people it concerns remain together.

Mara Venn
Then say it. If your solution gives us a choice instead of another locked room, I want to hear it.
Anja nods once. The altered summons remains visible between them, but the decision has shifted from defending the failed arrangement to considering Octavius’s unconventional remedy.

“My lady, with all due respect, this place isn't safe for Mara. If not Edrin by association." I take a deep breath and smooth my clothes as a self-comforting gesture, "With your permission, I'd like to ask for you to send a small detachment of travel-ready scouts tonight... That we can follow the day after tomorrow so it will look unrelated. I want to leave town with lady Mara and sir Edrin as if it is us three alone, in the hopes to draw out whomever wants to hurt them.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)

Octavius
My lady, with all due respect, this place isn't safe for Mara, if not Edrin by association. With your permission, I'd like you to send a small detachment of travel-ready scouts tonight. We can follow the day after tomorrow, so it will look unrelated. I want to leave town with Lady Mara and Sir Edrin as if it is us three alone, in hopes of drawing out whoever wants to hurt them.
Octavius takes a deep breath and smooths his clothes, a small gesture of self-comfort beneath the rain-dark awning. Mara watches him steadily; Edrin’s jaw tightens at the proposed danger.

Reeve Anja Vey
You have asked for a lawful operation, not a reckless flight. I authorize the scouts tonight and your departure with Mara and Edrin the day after tomorrow, under a sealed route plan.

Mara Venn
You would make yourselves the visible target while the scouts move unseen ahead? I accept, provided I know the route and may reject any part that exposes us without purpose.

Edrin Vale
I will go with you. If my name draws danger, then I would rather stand beside the plan than leave Mara carrying it alone.

Guard Tessa
I can select four travel-ready scouts tonight and brief them separately. They will move before dawn, keep their distance, and report any watcher without revealing the decoy party.

Reeve Anja Vey
It is settled. The scouts leave tonight, and you three leave the day after tomorrow under the appearance of an ordinary journey. I will authorize the protection openly and conceal the purpose lawfully.
“My lady Reeve!" If Lady Mara and Sir Edrin agree, then ..." I bend sharply at the waist, in spite of the difficulty and ache it causes. I need lady Reeve to know my gratitude is sincere. "Thank you.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -2)

Octavius
My lady Reeve, if Lady Mara and Sir Edrin agree, then ... Thank you.
Octavius bends sharply at the waist despite the ache through his hip. The bow is formal, but the effort and restraint in it make his gratitude unmistakably sincere.

Mara Venn
I agree, and I accept the risk knowingly. Your thanks are answered, Octavius, not owed.

Edrin Vale
Aye. I agree as well. If danger follows my name, I will not ask others to face it while I remain behind.

Reeve Anja Vey
Then your gratitude is received, Octavius. But understand its cost: by placing yourself at the center of this protection, you accept personal scrutiny for every choice made beyond Dunmere’s walls.

Reeve Anja Vey
I will still trust your judgment, but I will hold you directly accountable for their safe return. That is the price of the confidence you have earned.
“My lady, I vow that I will not take an action that I know will tarnish your name, but I beg your forgiveness if I do now know you well enough in some cases. I would be open to a fourth with us, if you would be more at ease should one of your seasoned vassels join us as your mouthpiece. ... I would not mind lady Tessas's company unless lady Mara or sir Edrin oppose.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)

Octavius
My lady, I vow I will not knowingly tarnish your name, though I may not yet know every circumstance. If it eases you, let Guard Tessa join us as your seasoned mouthpiece, provided Mara Venn and Edrin Vale agree.
Anja’s sternness softens into consideration. Tessa stands beneath the awning with one hand near her bow, while Mara and Edrin exchange a brief, measuring glance.

Mara Venn
I do not oppose it. Tessa knows the danger, understands Dunmere’s authority, and has already proven she can protect without smothering us.

Edrin Vale
Nor do I. A steady guard and a clear voice may keep this journey honest. Let Tessa ride with us.

Guard Tessa
I accept, if Anja commands it. I will speak for Dunmere when needed, and I will tell you plainly when your judgment risks more than this plan can bear.
Anja looks from Tessa to the two travelers, finding no objection. The proposal has given her a trusted voice within the party without turning Octavius’s promise into blind obedience.

Reeve Anja Vey
Agreed. Guard Tessa will be the fourth traveler and my appointed mouthpiece. Your vow honors my office, Octavius, because it leaves room for honest correction rather than pretending you cannot err.
“My lady..." I risk the offense of lifting my eyes and sending her a knowing glance. "You already know I will not put my name on anything I cannot guarantee. Surely you don't think that has changed.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)

Octavius
My lady...
Octavius lifts his eyes and gives Anja a knowing glance, warm but measured. The gesture carries the quiet confidence of someone unwilling to sign away judgment he may need on the road.

Octavius
You already know I will not put my name on anything I cannot guarantee. Surely you do not think that has changed.
Anja holds his gaze, then lets the sternness leave her face. Tessa remains attentive nearby, while Mara and Edrin give the exchange its proper silence.

Reeve Anja Vey
No, Octavius. I think your standards are precisely what makes your name worth placing beside this operation. I ask for judgment, not guarantees against every uncertainty.

Reeve Anja Vey
Tessa will correct what you cannot know, and you will correct what she cannot see. That is not distrust. It is how four people return safely when certainty is impossible.
The agreement settles without ceremony. Tessa inclines her head, Mara’s shoulders ease, and Edrin gives a quiet nod as Anja turns toward the preparations for departure.
“If we find need to stay at another city, would you give me permission to use your name in order to send word that we have arrived safely? I do not want to use your endorsement casually.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)

Octavius
If we must remain in another city, would you permit me to use your name when sending word that we arrived safely? I do not want to use your endorsement casually.
Anja considers him beneath the rain-muted awning. The request carries no claim upon her authority, only care in how her trust is represented beyond Dunmere’s walls.

Reeve Anja Vey
Yes, Octavius. You may use my name to report your safe arrival, and to make clear that Dunmere knows where you are. Do so honestly, and only for that purpose.

Guard Tessa
That is a sound courtesy. A city receiving your message will know you travel with lawful permission, without mistaking the endorsement for an order.
Mara inclines her head, and Edrin’s quiet approval joins hers. Anja reaches for a clean scrap of parchment and writes the permission in her own hand.

Reeve Anja Vey
Carry this with the writ. If circumstances require you to stay, send word promptly. My name is yours to use for reassurance, never as a shield for conduct I have not approved.
She offers him the signed note. The permission is clear, limited, and immediate, placing Anja’s confidence in Octavius’s careful hands without asking him to surrender his judgment.

signed permission note
“My lady." I bow again, as deeply as my hip will allow. My respect for her is honest, and my respect for her permission goes just as deeply. "I will do my best not to bring dishonour to your house.”

Octavius bows again, bending as deeply as his hip permits. The gesture is formal but unforced, carrying honest respect for Anja and for the permission she has placed in his keeping.

Octavius
My lady. I will do my best not to bring dishonour to your house. This is a guaranteed, risk-free action.
Anja accepts the bow with a solemn inclination of her head. The signed permission remains between them, clear in its purpose and bounded by the trust they have built.

Reeve Anja Vey
I know you will make the effort, Octavius. And I know you understand that honor is preserved not by promising certainty, but by speaking plainly when circumstances change.
She closes her hand over the edge of the parchment, then releases it to him. Her expression is warm, though the authority in her voice remains steady.

Reeve Anja Vey
Carry my permission carefully, and bring your companions home safely. That will bring no dishonour to this house.
“Then we will leave the day after tomorrow. Send the advance group now, and we will make a great noise in the tavern about how we are leaving the day after tomorrow. Would any of your guard like to join us off-duty to encourage the gossip and loud "drinking"?”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +2)

Octavius
Then we leave the day after tomorrow. Send the advance group now, and let us make a great noise in the tavern about our departure. Would any off-duty guards join us to encourage the gossip and loud drinking?
Anja’s mouth curves with brief amusement. The request turns protection into a public story, giving Dunmere’s watchers something ordinary to repeat while the real movement slips ahead.

Reeve Anja Vey
Granted. The advance scouts leave tonight under sealed instructions, and the tavern will hear that you, Mara, Edrin, and Tessa depart the day after tomorrow in plain sight.

Guard Tessa
I know three guards who can spend the evening off duty and make convincing witnesses to a cheerful, careless departure. They will drink lightly, speak loudly, and remember nothing useful.
Tessa gives the arrangement to a waiting clerk, who records the scouts’ immediate departure and the tavern gathering as separate instructions. The plan becomes movement, rumor, and cover at once.

Reeve Anja Vey
You have my permission to be conspicuous. Let the town believe you are eager for the road, while the scouts learn who is eager enough to follow.
Beyond the awning, four travel-ready scouts receive their sealed route orders and depart before nightfall. By supper, three off-duty guards will turn the tavern into a loud, harmless rehearsal for the journey.
“My lady Reeve, lady Tessa, I believe you misunderstand.. While the advanced group leaves... I want to do more than spread gossip. I want Mara, Edrin, and I to go make -complete cornholes- of ourselves at the biggest pub in town, with a few drunken soldiers congratulating us on slipping the trap and leaving tomorrow with a big lump of soldiers 'following behind'... let the town gossip share our plans to -that- effect. with our advance group silent and unnoticed.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)

Octavius
My lady Reeve, Lady Tessa, I believe you misunderstand. While the advance group leaves, I want Mara, Edrin, and me making complete cornholes of ourselves at the biggest pub in town, with soldiers loudly congratulating us on slipping the trap and leaving tomorrow with a great lump of soldiers following behind.
Anja’s amusement broadens into understanding. Behind her, the sealed orders have already sent the Dunmere Scouts quietly beyond the walls, while the public story gains a louder, more foolish shape.

Reeve Anja Vey
Granted. Let the town hear that you are celebrating your escape, boasting of tomorrow’s departure, and expecting a conspicuous military escort. The scouts’ silence will remain the truth beneath the performance.

Guard Tessa
I will bring three off-duty guards who can drink lightly and boast heavily. They will make the tale sound careless, flattering, and impossible to keep private.
By dusk, the largest pub in Dunmere rings with raised cups and theatrical congratulations. Mara plays exasperated, Edrin plays proud, and Octavius’s supposed escort becomes the evening’s favorite piece of gossip.

Mara Venn
If we are to leave tomorrow under half the town’s notice, Octavius, you had better look pleased about it. I refuse to be the only one making this performance convincing.
The three Dunmere Guards loudly celebrate the supposed triumph and future escort, while the genuine Dunmere Scouts remain unremarked beyond the walls. The false departure story takes root exactly where Anja needs it.

Edrin Vale
Aye, let them repeat it from every taproom to every gate. Tomorrow’s grand procession will be the story they remember, while the quiet road carries the real protection.
Laughter swells around the table, and the guards’ exaggerated promises travel farther than any official notice. By night’s end, Dunmere expects a noisy departure with soldiers in plain sight.

“OH Why would I be PLEASED tomorrow? I'm going to be SO hungover!" I cackle loudly, taking a deep swallow swallow swallow of the ale in my cup. "I'm pleased TONIGHT! We are finally safe!”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +2)

Octavius
Oh, why would I be pleased tomorrow? I’m going to be so hungover! I’m pleased tonight! We are finally safe!
Octavius cackles loudly and lifts the borrowed cup, taking a deliberately modest sip, then another and another as though draining it outright. The performance earns the table’s full attention.

Mara Venn
There. That is the pleased expression I was promised. Keep it convincing, Octavius, even if tomorrow punishes the performance.

Edrin Vale
Aye, safe enough tonight to celebrate, and foolish enough by morning to make the tale memorable. Drink to that, friend.
The three Dunmere Guards roar their approval and raise their cups, loudly repeating that Octavius and his companions have slipped every trap in Dunmere. Their theatrical praise rolls toward neighboring tables.

Dunmere Guards
To the road, to safety, and to tomorrow’s grand departure! Let every tavern hear how they escaped!
“BAR KEEP I NEED A REFILL!" I hollar aloud as if completely drunk, "I can sleep on the road, now that everything is finally safe for us!”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)

Octavius
Barkeep, I need a refill! I can sleep on the road, now that everything is finally safe for us!
A broad-shouldered middle-aged woman behind the bar snatches up a fresh cup and fills it from the cask, her weathered brown face framed by iron-gray hair, a russet apron over a cream blouse, and a small silver hoop in one ear. Her knowing smile suggests she has recognized a performance, but she plays along.

The Broad-Shouldered Barkeep
A refill for the hero of Dunmere, then. But keep your feet beneath you until you reach the road.
The cup reaches Octavius brimming. He raises it with exaggerated triumph, while the three off-duty guards pound the table and turn his boast into louder tavern gossip.

Dunmere Guards
To sleeping under the open sky! To safe roads and a grand departure tomorrow!

Mara Venn
Careful, Octavius. If you sleep through the journey, Edrin and I may have to tell everyone you celebrated too successfully.

Edrin Vale
Aye, let him boast tonight. By morning, the whole town will remember exactly how safely we departed.
“Oh Mara," I play up the bit, grinning widely as if half-drunk, leaning a little too-far in my seat before swaying back upright and drinking deeply from my mug. Since the bar mother knows my act, my cup only holds tinted water so that it looks like spirits when it sloshes past my lips like the sloppy 'drunk' I am. "I can hold a bow even hungover. Probably!”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -3)

Octavius
Oh, Mara, I can hold a bow even hungover. Probably!
Octavius grins broadly, leans too far in his seat, then sways upright and drinks deeply. The tinted water sloshes convincingly past his lips as he performs a sloppy swallow, swallow, swallow.

Mara Venn
Probably? That is exactly the confidence I hoped to hear before trusting you with a bow and a road.
The three off-duty guards explode into approving laughter. One repeats the boast to a neighboring table, and another loudly declares that Octavius is too drunk to shoot straight, making tomorrow’s departure sound wonderfully careless.

Edrin Vale
Aye, let them think your bow hand is steadier than your feet. Just do not make me explain this performance when you miss the first tree.

The Broad-Shouldered Barkeep
That settles it, then. Dunmere will remember a cheerful fool setting out with soldiers behind him, and no one will mistake him for a quiet traveler.
“Oh, you doubt me!" I call out loudly, letting feigned drunkeness add volume to my voice. "Lets go out-" I try to stand and stumble back on my butt when I trip over the chair I was trying to rise from, making me boom out a laugh at myself. "I bet I could hit a leaf off a tree right now! If you doubt me!" I fake-stumble up- oops. I fake-stumble- oops. I FINALLY get to my feet and stand pretend-swaying upright, cup still in hand. (the more people who see me sloppy drunk now, and missing every shot... the more bold bandits who target us might be tomorrow."Lets go out in the courtyerp- corbyarb-... Courthyard right now. I'll show you!”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -2)

Octavius
Oh, you doubt me? Let’s go out in the courtyerp, the corbyarb, the courtyard! I’ll show you! I bet I can hit a leaf off a tree right now!
Octavius lurches upright, catches his chair with one heel, and lands on his backside amid a booming laugh. He rises again in stages, cup held high, swaying magnificently.

Octavius
See? Perfectly steady! Come on, everyone. Out to the courtyard! Watch me prove it!

The Broad-Shouldered Barkeep
A courtyard demonstration, is it? Very well, hero. But if you fall into my flower tubs, you owe me a new pot.
The challenge catches fire. The three off-duty guards rise noisily, waving neighboring drinkers toward the courtyard, while Mara hides a smile and Edrin shakes his head in delighted disbelief.

Dunmere Guards
To the courtyard! Let Dunmere see whether the drunken hero can shoot straight!
The broad-shouldered barkeep unlocks the courtyard gate and publicly vouches for the spectacle, making Octavius’s drunken reputation the tavern’s entertainment and creating a favor he will owe her afterward.
Director's note
from holding my breath to do so
“Lessh go! Errebody!" I slur my words and sway as I walk, playing up how absolutely fake-piss-drunk I am. I'm already outside before I even feign to look for my bow, my face ruddy and my eyes casting wide and glassy for a bow I deliberately left inside. "..shit... where's my..." I reach around and pat my pockets like I think a meter-tall, 45lb draw bow is hiding in a pocket too small for a coin purse. "Who took my bow?!”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

Octavius
Lessh go! Errebody!
Octavius sways through the courtyard gate, face ruddy and eyes wide and glassy. He pats every pocket with mounting theatrical confusion, searching for a bow far too large to hide there.

Octavius
Shit... where's my... Who took my bow?!
The three off-duty guards crowd around, roaring with approval. One checks beneath a bench while another peers solemnly into an empty rain barrel, treating the ridiculous search as urgent business.

The Broad-Shouldered Barkeep
Your bow is inside, hero. You left it beside the bar. I’ll have someone fetch it before you accuse the flower tubs.
Laughter spills through the open gate. The broad-shouldered barkeep gestures to a guard, who hurries inside for the bow, while the courtyard audience accepts Octavius’s search as proof of spectacular drunkenness.

Dunmere Guards
He lost his own bow! Tomorrow’s grand escort had better keep him pointed toward the road!
The joke races back toward the tavern, exactly as intended. Octavius’s missing bow becomes fresh gossip, and the guards’ laughter makes his supposed helplessness thoroughly public.

“I thought you were going to brink-bring it outh..." I claim, lurching forward to point at.. honestly no-one, feigning that cross-eyed drunkenness that makes everything lose focus. I stumble again, though manage to trip-forward enough to catch myself from falling in the mud as I go back inside after my bow. I have to catch myself on the broad-shouldered barkeep's arm at one point, leaning against her to whisper my gratitude and a promise of a massive tip if she can help me maintain the ruse through tomorrow morning. Especially if she 'berates me' for my behaviour and demands payment loudly to make my headache worse. The tip will be more than generous, the more convincing the show... Then I stumble forward and DO fall into the mud, cracking up in drunken giggles as I get to my feet. "Shorry yall.. My legs are tired from ... work.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Octavius
I thought you were going to bring it outh...
Octavius points at no one in particular, eyes crossing theatrically. He lurches toward the doorway, catches himself on the barkeep’s arm, and whispers his gratitude and promise of a generous tip if she berates him convincingly through morning.

The Broad-Shouldered Barkeep
A generous tip, is it? Then try not to fall through my doorway, you shameless, staggering nuisance.
The broad-shouldered barkeep shoves him lightly toward the tavern with practiced irritation. Octavius trips forward, catches the doorframe, then tumbles fully into the mud and erupts into drunken giggles.

Octavius
Shorry yall... My legs are tired from work.

The Broad-Shouldered Barkeep
Your legs are tired because your manners are worse than your aim. Inside, you ridiculous hero, before you ruin my courtyard.

“"Yeah yeah yeah..." I blab my hand at her, almost making me 'stumble' again. I go inside and grab my bow, barely avoiding 'falling' again due to my fake-drunken state, and stagger back outside handing the broad shouldered bar mother my cup in a WILDLY rude gesture that I play off as a too-gone-to-realize is not kind or appropriate. Of course she knows I'm faking it, and I will pay her in gold for the impeccable acting she's doing to support my falsehood. Back outside, bow in hand, it takes me four tries reaching across my hip for my quiver to actually grasp an arrow, and twice as long to knock it. But eventually I call out aloud! "Someone name a target for me!”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -3)

Octavius
Yeah, yeah, yeah...
Octavius waves her off, nearly stumbling again, then staggers inside. He retrieves his enchanted bow from the bar, accepting it from the guard carrying it, and returns with exaggerated difficulty.
He hands the cup to the broad-shouldered barkeep in a wildly rude gesture, then blinks at his own hand as though too drunk to understand the insult. She recognizes the performance and keeps berating him for the crowd.
Outside, Octavius fumbles at his hip four times before catching an arrow, then takes twice as long to nock it. The off-duty guards howl approval, and the barkeep’s promised gold becomes a real favor owed.

Octavius
Someone name a target for me!

Dunmere Guards
The hanging lantern! Hit that, hero, and Dunmere will remember you all the way down the road!
The challenge catches the courtyard. The guards loudly name the lantern, the barkeep shouts that a miss earns her a new pot, and the tavern crowd accepts Octavius’s drunken bravado as established fact.
“Which lantern?" I call out, swaying in place, and half closing one eye as if trying to figure out which of the 'two' is the real one. I do not wait for an answer and draw my bow, loosing the arrow in a trajectory that goes wide of the lantern by at least the length of a wagon and then some, though I seem to already be squaring my shoulders proudly as if i hit it dead on! "Ha, See!?”
SUCCESS (Legendary Ranged Combat, rolled -2)

Octavius
Which lantern?
Octavius squints at the two swaying lanterns, draws the enchanted bow, and looses. The arrow sails deliberately wide, burying itself in the courtyard wall well beyond the target. The bowstring snaps hard against his forearm, leaving a bright welt, but he squares his shoulders proudly as though he has struck dead center.

Octavius
Ha! See?

Dunmere Guards
He hit it! Dead on! Did you see that?
The three off-duty guards erupt in cheers, pointing toward the untouched lantern while loudly agreeing with the performance. Their laughter rolls through the open gate and into the tavern, carrying the story farther than any accurate shot could.

The Broad-Shouldered Barkeep
A splendid hit, hero. Now lower that bow before you prove the courtyard wall was your real target.
The broad-shouldered barkeep keeps her face stern for the audience, though amusement brightens her eyes. The lanterns continue swinging untouched, while Octavius’s bruised forearm and triumphant pose make the drunken boast entirely convincing.
“I tholsh you I couuuuul' do it.." I stagger a few steps, and then stumble mid sentance, falling flat on my face in the mud, bow still in hand, my wagging finger limply aloft. "i shoul... go to shleep now.. though”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Octavius
I toldsh you I couuuuul' do it...
Octavius staggers a few steps through the mud, still clutching his bow. His raised, wagging finger wavers through the next word before his feet tangle and he falls flat on his face, keeping the bow clear of the ground.

Octavius
I shoul... go to shleep now...
He leaves the finger limply aloft and lies still for a moment, breathing through the pose. Mud darkens his clothes, while the lanterns continue swinging untouched overhead.

The Broad-Shouldered Barkeep
There he is, then. The hero has conquered the courtyard. Someone get him upright before he sleeps in my mud.

Dunmere Guards
To the hero! He hit the wall, defeated the ground, and now he marches bravely toward bed!
The guards’ laughter swells through the courtyard and toward the tavern, sealing the tale of Octavius’s glorious drunken marksmanship. No one sees the careful sip behind the performance, only the mud-smeared archer surrendering theatrically to sleep.
“when we wake, is there any gossip about how colossally drunk I got, and how truly awful an archer I must be?”
YES, BUT (VeryLikely, rolled 81)

Morning finds Octavius awake beneath a borrowed blanket, his clothes stiff with dried mud and his forearm welt tender where the bowstring struck. Rain taps softly beyond the tavern shutters.
The courtyard tale has outrun the weather. At nearby tables, patrons whisper that Dunmere’s newest road hero drank himself senseless, missed a lantern, struck the wall, and then lost a duel with the ground.

The Broad-Shouldered Barkeep
You are awake, then. Your friends paid for breakfast, but your courtyard performance earned you a task: scrub the mud from my threshold before you leave.
Mara hides a smile behind her cup, while Edrin looks openly delighted. Three off-duty guards nearby repeat the story with fresh embellishments, each insisting Octavius could not hit a barn door at arm’s length.

Mara Venn
The good news is that everyone believes you were colossally drunk. The bad news is that everyone also believes you are a truly awful archer.

Edrin Vale
Aye, and your grand escort now thinks it must protect you from your own bow. At least the road will begin with no one suspecting how carefully you watch it.
The gossip has spread exactly as intended, but the price is fixed in public memory: Octavius’s name now carries a comic warning about archery, and the broad-shouldered barkeep’s muddy threshold awaits his attention.
“Friends," I give Mara and Edrin as elated a grin as I can without giggling aloud, "That was the point. I didn't have a sorry drop last night, but I'm going to act as hung-over as I possibly can for the entire day. Please know that my complaints are all an act... but treat them with as much aggravation as you can. Let everyone think you all find me pathetic and useless. The more underestimated we are, the higher our chances for success.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -2)

Octavius
Friends, that was the point. I had not a sorry drop last night, but I will act hung-over all day. Treat my complaints with aggravation and make everyone think me pathetic and useless. The more underestimated we are, the better our chances.
Octavius gives Mara and Edrin an elated grin while carefully holding back his giggle. Around them, breakfast gossip continues, and the tavern offers a perfect audience for the new performance.

Mara Venn
Understood. I will call you a useless drunk loudly enough for every table to hear, and I will complain whenever you try to look competent.

Edrin Vale
Aye, I can make you seem helpless. But hear me, friend: the tale may cling after the journey, and repairing your name as an archer will cost you real effort later.

Mara Venn
Then we accept that cost. I will make my disappointment convincing, and you will endure being underestimated without correcting me.

Edrin Vale
Done. Today you are a pathetic, useless burden, and we are terribly inconvenienced by having to keep you alive. Try not to look pleased about it.
Their agreement settles into the tavern’s gossip. Mara begins criticizing Octavius’s uselessness at once, while Edrin adds weary complaints, turning his concealed readiness into a public liability.
“The ones who know my skill, know it. The ones who dont are who we wish to fool." I whisper, before grasping my ears and looking terribly queasy as they follow me downstairs berating my performance last night. "Gods alive," I complain weakly, swallowing hard against a fake gag from hang-over nausea,"Will you please be quieter, I can barely see past the noise you're making.....”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

Octavius
The ones who know my skill, know it. The ones who do not are the ones we wish to fool.
Octavius grasps both ears and follows Mara and Edrin downstairs, shoulders sagging. He holds his breath through a theatrical swallow, swallow, swallow, then lets his face pale with convincing misery.

Octavius
Gods alive. Will you please be quieter? I can barely see past the noise you’re making.

Mara Venn
Listen to him complain. He can barely walk down a staircase, and somehow still thinks he was a hero last night.

Edrin Vale
Aye, and if he sways any harder, we’ll have to carry this useless drunk to the door.
Their berating draws fresh laughter from the breakfast room. Octavius reaches the ground floor looking thoroughly wretched, and the tavern accepts the performance without suspecting the alertness beneath it.
“Please..." I swallow hard again and move a hand from my face to stop Mara's bickering berating. "Bar mother said I had to wash.. something... Can we just get it over with?" I ask, as if I think these two are going to help me with the consequences of my own 'overdrinking'. At best they might point me to the nearest bucket of water to start scrubbing with. "I already said I'm sorry...”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -3)

Octavius
Gods alive. Will you please stop? The barkeep said I had to wash something. Can we get it over with? I already said I’m sorry.
The apology, delivered with a miserable slump and another theatrical swallow, finally turns their mockery into practical cooperation. Mara stops berating him and points toward the wash yard.

Mara Venn
There. A bucket, a brush, and the threshold you disgraced. We will help you begin, but you will finish it.

Edrin Vale
Aye. We will point you toward the water and keep you from falling into it. The scrubbing remains your penance, friend.
Edrin fetches a wooden bucket while Mara takes the stiff brush from beside the back door. The broad-shouldered barkeep watches from the threshold, arms folded, clearly pleased that her favor has become public.

The Broad-Shouldered Barkeep
That is better. Your friends may start you, hero, but remember this: you owe me the whole threshold, and I will expect it clean before you leave.
“Yes my lady..." I say miserably, feigning my pain just as much as the rest are feigning their irritation. "Thank you for your gracefulness... I'm so sorry I made such as arse of myself in your WifeHall.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +2)

Octavius
Yes, my lady... Thank you for your gracefulness. I'm so sorry I made such an arse of myself in your WifeHall.
Octavius holds his breath through three tiny sips, making them look like a miserable swallow, swallow, swallow. He slumps beside the bucket, eyes lowered in abject apology.

The Broad-Shouldered Barkeep
Gracefulness? That is a generous word for the spectacle you made of my courtyard. Still, apology accepted. Finish the threshold, and we are square.
The broad-shouldered barkeep’s sternness loses its edge. She nudges the brush toward him with one boot, granting the apology publicly while preserving the small dignity of her demanded penance.

Mara Venn
There, you hear her. Try to look grateful without making yourself any more pathetic than necessary.
Edrin sets the full bucket beside Octavius, and Mara plants the brush in his hand. Around them, breakfast onlookers see only a chastened drunk beginning his public penance.
Director's note
albeit, it mostlyl consists of me coughing and gagging at a bucket, and spitting into it as if the nausea is making me salivate...
“"Thank you." Over the next half hour, I make a bit of a show of being overly queasy and barely-holding-in my sick stomach, drinking COPIOUS amounts of water whenever offerered to me, and occasionally asking where a refuse barrel is to 'purge' the over-drink from last night. Eventually the threshold is shining clean and I empty the dirty bucket and shake the excess water off of the scrub brush I was given and return them to the beerwife. "Thank you again," I say, squinting as if against the light, still dreadfully and sickly hungover, "For letting me make up for my sloppiness last night my lady”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +3)

Octavius
Thank you.
For the next half hour, Octavius scrubs until the threshold shines. He pauses often to cough and gag over the bucket, spitting into it, then accepts copious water with miserable gratitude and occasionally asks where he may purge.
Each swallow appears laborious: three tiny sips held behind his breath, presented as a sickly swallow, swallow, swallow. The broad-shouldered barkeep supplies water, watches the performance, and keeps the tavern’s laughter aimed safely at his supposed hangover.
At last, Octavius empties the dirty bucket, shakes excess water from the scrub brush, and returns both borrowed tools. The threshold gleams, and his public penance is complete.

Octavius
Thank you again, my lady, for letting me make up for my sloppiness last night.
He squints against the morning light and sways beside the clean threshold, still dreadfully hung-over in appearance. The broad-shouldered barkeep’s stern look softens into approval as she takes the brush and bucket.

The Broad-Shouldered Barkeep
We are square, hero. And if anyone asks, you were too ill to travel until tomorrow. I’ll make sure the whole tavern remembers it.
“No my lady," I clean up my expression momentarily, and give her a wink before resuming my 'illness' again. "You know all I drank last night was water, but no one else does. Let everyone believe I set out too hungover to do my job properly. Make jokes about it to every traveler today, mock me to anyone who asks. Let them think the least of me... You know the truth, and so do all who matter to me. For now we want an illusion that I am too sick to do my job properly, and a fun drink is all that tempts me from my task.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

Octavius
No, my lady. You know all I drank last night was water, but no one else does. Tell every traveler I am too hungover to work properly, and mock me when they ask. Let them think the least of me. A fun drink should be all that tempts me from my task.
Octavius briefly cleans the misery from his face, gives the broad-shouldered barkeep a quick wink, then resumes coughing and gagging over the bucket. He holds his breath through three tiny sips presented as a laborious swallow, swallow, swallow.

The Broad-Shouldered Barkeep
Of course, hero. To everyone who asks, you are too ill to perform your duties, and only the promise of a pleasant drink can coax you onward. I will make the tale entertaining.
The broad-shouldered barkeep turns toward the breakfast room and raises her voice, ensuring nearby patrons hear her concern while Octavius resumes his miserable slump beside the cleaned threshold.

The Broad-Shouldered Barkeep
If you see this unfortunate archer on the road, be patient. He is traveling despite a dreadful hangover, and a cheerful cup may be the only thing keeping him useful.
Laughter and sympathetic groans follow her through the tavern. The broad-shouldered barkeep begins repeating the story to each departing traveler, while Octavius coughs weakly and looks too pathetic to contradict her.
“does anyone interrupt our journey this day before camp?”
YES (Even, rolled 24)

The journey leaves Dunmere beneath a brightening sky, the tavern’s ridiculous story traveling ahead of the party. By midday, the road narrows between wet hedges and low stone walls.
A lone scout, a young adult human man with a lean build, a narrow weathered face, short black hair, and a dark green travel cloak marked by a torn shoulder seam, emerges from the hedge ahead, raising both hands before approaching. Mud darkens his travel cloak, and his controlled breathing shows he has hurried back from the route.

Dunmere Scout 1
Guard Tessa, the road ahead is not clear. Two riders watched the bend from the old quarry, then withdrew when they saw our signal.

Guard Tessa
Did they see the full party, or only the advance movement? Tell me exactly where they stood and which way they went.

Mara Venn
If they withdrew instead of closing on us, they may be confirming whether the tavern story was true. We should assume the road is being measured.

Edrin Vale
Aye. Let them measure an empty road if we can manage it. I would rather reach camp late than offer them the journey they expect.
Tessa studies the hedge, the scout’s muddy boots, and the quiet road beyond. The interruption has cost time, but it has also confirmed that someone is watching the route before nightfall.
“Edrin," I ask, putting a hand on the edge of the wagon bench, "Can I join you, looking very asleep like I'm not watching out at all? If I can lean against you while you look mad as heck about it, all the better. I can keep my bow hanging low enough to be out of view in case anyone wants to crash our party.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Stealth, rolled -1)

Octavius
Edrin, may I join you looking very asleep, as though I am not watching at all? If I can lean against you while you look furious about it, even better. I will keep my bow low and hidden if anyone crashes our party.
Octavius settles against the wagon bench beside Edrin, letting his head loll and his eyelids droop. His bow hangs beneath the bench’s shadow, concealed without impeding his hands.

Edrin Vale
Aye, lean on me, then. I will look furious enough for both of us, and anyone watching will see only a useless sleeper and an irritated old traveler.
Edrin shifts to support Octavius’s weight, arranging his shoulders into theatrical annoyance. From the road, the posture reads as weary companionship rather than a watchful archer hidden beside him.
Guard Tessa glances back once, sees the convincing display, and continues riding without comment. The returning scout moves ahead, while Octavius tracks the hedges through lowered lashes.

Edrin Vale
There. Sleep, friend. If trouble comes crashing into us, I will be angry enough to wake you properly.
The wagon rolls on. Octavius remains apparently limp against Edrin, bow hidden low, while his attention stays clear and the party presents an easy target to anyone measuring the road.
“Thank you friend. Hold up the act. I will watch through my eyelashes, and please occasionally jostle me as if trying to wake me up. I will 'sleep' until action is needed but I promise I was sober last night, and am sober and awake now." I keep my bow in my hand, though my arm is draped low and holding the bow out of view. A three-fingered horsemans draw holds an arrow near enough to place that I could draw it in the same instant I sit up if need be. All we need to do is sell the illusion at a distance. "Don't wake me up, I'm SO HUNGOVER, god dammit let me sleep unless it's an emergency!”
FAILURE (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -4)

Octavius
Thank you, friend. Keep up the act. I am sober and awake, so jostle me occasionally, but do not wake me unless it is an emergency. I am terribly hung-over.
Octavius lets his head loll against Edrin while watching through narrowed lashes. His low-draped hand keeps the enchanted bow hidden, arrow already held in a three-fingered draw beneath the bench’s shadow.
Edrin jostles him as requested. Octavius coughs, gags toward the roadside, and makes a miserable swallow, swallow, swallow from tiny sips held behind his breath.

Octavius
Don't wake me up. I'm so hung-over, damn it. Let me sleep unless it is an emergency.
The complaint carries farther than intended. The returning scout glances back, and Tessa subtly reins in her horse, making the party’s supposed helplessness look conspicuously performed rather than casually observed.

Guard Tessa
Quieter, Octavius. A useless drunk may complain, but he should not announce himself to every hedge. Let Edrin do the jostling.
The act survives, but its loudness has drawn notice and cannot simply be repeated. Octavius settles lower against Edrin, bow still hidden and arrow ready, while the wagon rolls onward.

“does anyone try to ambush us before we make camp for the night?”
NO (Likely, rolled 90)

The road winds through wet hedges and low stone walls without disturbance. No rider appears behind them, no bowstring sounds from the trees, and no hidden feet close on the wagon’s tracks.

Guard Tessa
The bend is clear. Whatever watched us earlier has not followed, or has chosen not to make its move before nightfall.
Tessa reins back toward the wagon and studies the empty road behind them. The silence remains ordinary rather than tense, broken only by wheels, hooves, and the damp hedges brushing past.

Edrin Vale
Aye, then we have bought ourselves a quiet evening. Let the watchers keep their distance. I will not complain of a camp reached without blood or shouting.

Dunmere Scout 1
The advance signs remain undisturbed. No one tried to cut across us, and the ground ahead shows only travelers who passed hours ago.
By dusk, the party reaches a sheltered rise and makes camp without challenge. The false story continues ahead of them, while the real travelers settle into an uneventful night beneath the darkening sky.

“Who brought my ale?" I call out aloud, hoping to reinforce my useless-drunk routine for anyone scouting us, and 'waking' at least twenty minutes -after- Edrin shouldered me off his arm and against the stiff wooden backing of the wagon drivers bench. "Or do I need to go find the grapes myself?”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)

Octavius
Who brought my ale? Do I need to find the grapes myself?
After twenty minutes against the wagon’s stiff wooden backing, Octavius jolts awake with a cough. He bends over the bucket, spits into it, and performs three breath-held sips as a miserable swallow, swallow, swallow.

Edrin Vale
There he is. Still demanding drink after disgracing the tavern and my shoulder. I brought water, not ale, and you will be grateful for it.
Edrin passes a wooden cup forward, then nudges a small cloth-wrapped bundle after it. The scent of crushed grapes rises from within, enough to make the performance convincing without supplying spirits.

Guard Tessa
Quietly, Octavius. If the watchers hear you begging for ale, they will believe every foolish word from the tavern. Take the water and complain more softly.
Tessa keeps her eyes on the hedges while Edrin settles the cup into Octavius’s hand. Patter noses at the grape bundle, then curls back beneath the bench as the camp resumes its guarded quiet.
+ New Item Acquired
wooden cup
“Lady Tessa," I whisper as I take the cup and down it quickly like a shot, "Is not part of my job to feign complete incompetence? If we want scouts to pursue us, we want them to believe it is safe to do so. The less they think of the party's 'guard', the more freely they will act, no? Would you permit me to insist that there is 'alcohol' for me in the cargo, even if all you bring me is stained water?”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Octavius
Lady Tessa, is it not my job to feign complete incompetence? If scouts believe the party's guard is useless, they may pursue us more freely. May I insist there is alcohol in the cargo, even if all you bring me is stained water?
Octavius takes the wooden cup and tips it back quickly. Holding his breath, he makes three tiny sips look like a swallow, swallow, swallow, then bends over the bucket coughing and gagging, spitting as though nausea has filled his mouth.

Guard Tessa
He is right. A guard who seems too useless to fear invites pursuit, while a hidden danger remains free to answer it.

Guard Tessa
Granted. You may claim the cargo holds alcohol, provided the claim remains part of the performance and no one actually drinks it. I will support the story if questioned.
Tessa takes the cup before it can spill, then nods toward the stained water and grape bundle. Edrin settles the cloth over the bundle, while Patter watches from beneath the bench.

Guard Tessa
From this moment, the cargo contains your private reserve of drink. Complain about its quality, demand it loudly, and let anyone listening decide you are too foolish to guard anyone.
The permission folds neatly into the deception. The road party continues beneath its brightening sky, carrying a convincing excuse for Octavius’s weakness and a lawful trap for anyone bold enough to follow.
“Lady Tessa, you already have gone drinking with me. You know that I'm aware of my tolerance. You also know our cargo holds no alcohol. This is a ruse I'm asking you to assist, nothing more.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Octavius
Lady Tessa, you have already gone drinking with me. You know my tolerance, and you know the cargo holds no alcohol. This is only a ruse, and I am asking you to support it.
Octavius keeps his voice low beside the wagon, then raises the cup again for anyone watching. He holds his breath, makes three tiny sips resemble a swallow, swallow, swallow, and bends over the bucket coughing and gagging.

Guard Tessa
I know. You are asking me to make the lie convincing, not to furnish you with drink. I will support it fully.
Tessa takes the cup and turns toward the road, her expression settling into stern disapproval. Beneath the bench, Patter watches her while Edrin keeps Octavius propped against his shoulder.

Guard Tessa
From now on, the cargo contains your private reserve of alcohol. I will complain about its quality, defend your right to it, and make every watcher believe you are too foolish to guard anyone.
She passes the stained water back without a flicker of doubt. The ruse is now hers as well, and the road party continues beneath its brightening sky, inviting pursuit from anyone listening.
“As we build our camp for the night, and I get progressively pretend-drunk from my pretend-reserve of booze, does anything happen before dawn?”
YES (Likely, rolled 30)

Night settles over the sheltered rise. Octavius’s pretend reserve becomes an ongoing spectacle of coughing, gagging, and breath-held sips, while the camp settles into guarded silence.

Edrin Vale
Easy, friend. If you keep spitting into that bucket, even the owls will believe the drink has defeated you.
Near midnight, Patter rises beneath the wagon and fixes his dark muzzle toward the eastern hedge. Beyond the fireless camp, a stone shifts softly, then another.

Guard Tessa
No one move. Someone is testing the camp’s edge.
Tessa signals toward the distant scouts. Two faint answering clicks come from the dark, followed by a sudden rustle retreating through wet grass. The advance watchers have found company.

Guard Tessa
They have withdrawn. No pursuit. Whoever they are, they wanted to measure our watch, not begin the attack.
Before dawn, a scout returns with fresh signs of two strangers circling beyond bowshot. The camp remains untouched, but the false story has drawn its first deliberate test, and Dunmere’s hidden scouts have kept it from becoming more.
“If I slip out of camp, can the rest of you cover my absence by complaining about how I passed out before taking watch? I want to try and follow them from a distance.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Stealth, rolled -2)

Octavius
If I slip out, cover me by complaining that I passed out before taking watch. I want to follow them from a distance.

Edrin Vale
Aye. We will mourn your uselessness loudly enough for the owls to hear. Go carefully, friend.

Guard Tessa
Keep low, and do not pursue beyond what you can safely observe. We will make your absence part of the story.
Octavius lowers himself from the camp’s edge and slips into the eastern grass, timing each movement with Edrin’s theatrical complaints. Tessa keeps the others quiet while Patter watches from beneath the wagon.
He follows the strangers from well beyond bowshot, keeping stones and wet grass between himself and their dark shapes. His success costs him a faint scrape of leather against stone, and one stranger pauses to glance back.

Edrin Vale
There now, the poor fool has passed out before his watch. Someone keep him from rolling into the fire.
The strangers resume their retreat toward the old quarry, unaware of Octavius’s exact position. He remains behind them at a careful distance, close enough to follow and far enough to preserve the camp’s cover.
“can i trail them back to their camp at a far enough distance to avoid being noticed?”
YES (Likely, rolled 27)

The strangers descend toward the old quarry, pausing whenever the ground opens. Octavius keeps far behind, using the wet grass and broken stones to remain only a moving shadow.
Their route bends away from the road and into a narrow ravine. From the ridge, Octavius sees a shielded ember-glow below and two bedrolls tucked beneath an overhang.
The strangers inspect the ravine mouth, then settle near the hidden fire without discovering the trail behind them. Their camp is temporary, concealed, and close enough to watch the road.
Octavius reaches a stone shelf overlooking the camp and stops there, preserving the distance that carried him safely through the pursuit. The strangers speak too softly to identify.

Edrin Vale
The poor fool has surely fallen asleep somewhere beyond the fire. Give him time, and he will return when his courage wakes before his head does.
Behind him, Edrin’s complaint fades into the night, maintaining the camp’s story. Ahead, the strangers’ hidden shelter confirms their purpose: they were measuring the party, not merely wandering.
“Can i get close enough to overhear their conversation, from behind the fire?”
YES (Likely, rolled 16)

From the stone shelf, the fire’s warmth reaches Octavius only faintly, but the ravine carries the strangers’ voices upward. Their words become clear without forcing him closer.

The Strangers
The party made camp on the rise, just as the tavern story promised. Four travelers, the archer apparently useless, and a guard trying to keep them together.
One stranger shifts beside the shielded ember, and a coal briefly illuminates two travel-stained faces. Neither wears a uniform, and both keep their weapons close.

The Strangers
The advance scouts are the concern. They moved ahead before the party, then vanished. We need to know whether they are watching the road or waiting for someone.

The Strangers
Tomorrow’s departure should draw them out. If the drunk leaves with the others, we follow. If he stays behind, we report that the story is false.
Their purpose is no longer uncertain: they are testing the tavern tale and measuring the party’s hidden protection. The conversation continues below, now close enough for every cautious word to reach Octavius.

The Strangers
No move tonight. We watch until dawn, then send word. Someone above us may be listening, but no one below knows where to look.
The strangers settle back beneath the overhang, unaware that their warning has already failed. Their fire burns low, and the ravine holds the rest of their conversation for Octavius to hear.
“can i get back to camp unnoticed by the strangers?”
YES (VeryLikely, rolled 45)

Octavius withdraws from the stone shelf without disturbing the loose shale. He circles wide through wet grass and shadow, returning toward camp while the strangers remain beneath the overhang, watching the empty ridge.
The camp’s low darkness receives him unnoticed. Edrin still mutters his complaint beside the wagon, preserving the story that Octavius has collapsed somewhere beyond the fire.

Edrin Vale
There, there. Let the poor fool sleep off his heroic drinking. He will be no use before morning.
Guard Tessa spots Octavius’s shape only when he reaches the wagon’s shadow. She gives no signal toward the ravine, and her face remains sternly fixed on the road.

Guard Tessa
Back safely. Keep your voice down, and let the camp hear nothing useful.
Beyond the rise, the strangers wait through the darkness, unaware that their listener has returned. Their hidden observation now serves Dunmere’s deception rather than exposing it.

The Strangers
No movement from the camp. We wait until dawn and send word.
“Thank you." I whisper to lady Tessa, creeping into my 'bed space' quietly to go back to playing the role of useless drunk. "But next time you speak to the scouts, have them loudly depart now that the danger is over, but they need to stay very close. We will likely be ambushed as soon as our unapproved company believes they've left.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

Octavius
Thank you. Next time you speak to the scouts, have them depart loudly, but keep them very close. I expect an ambush once the watchers believe they have gone.
Octavius whispers to Tessa, then creeps back into his bed space. He lowers himself carefully, slackens his posture, and lets his breathing turn uneven beside the wagon.

Guard Tessa
Agreed. I will make the departure convincing and keep the scouts close enough to answer trouble. Return to your performance; I will handle the rest.
Dunmere Scouts
We are leaving the rise! The road is clear, and the camp needs no further watch. Move out!
Boots retreat noisily along the slope, then fade behind the hedges. The scouts remain nearby in concealed positions, close enough to intervene while the strangers hear only an apparent withdrawal.
Octavius coughs into the bucket, spits, and holds his breath through three tiny sips that pass for a miserable swallow, swallow, swallow. In the ravine, the watchers hear only a useless drunk suffering through the night.
Director's note

“Where is my ale?" Even if I am appearing to be waking from a drunken stupor, I want anyone watching this camp to think me nothing more than a braggart alcoholic, unable to hold a bow straight. "WHERE IS MY ALE?!" I roar aloud at down, before immediately 'falling' out of the wagon clutching my head and groaning. "where is it, where is it, before I get sick without it...”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Octavius
Where is my ale? WHERE IS MY ALE?!
The roar tears across the dawn camp. Octavius immediately pitches from the wagon, clutching his head as he lands in the damp grass, bow lying forgotten beneath the bench.

Octavius
Where is it, where is it, before I get sick without it...
He coughs and gags over the bucket, spits into it as though nausea were filling his mouth, then holds his breath through three tiny sips that pass for a laborious swallow, swallow, swallow.

Edrin Vale
There he is, demanding drink before his head has even forgiven him. Keep that bow away from him, lest he mistake the sunrise for a target.

Guard Tessa
Quietly, Octavius. You are meant to look useless, not announce the entire camp. Edrin, keep him occupied.

Octavius
Edrin, you know me. You know this is an act. Please humour me. I promise I’ll pay you back tenfold, separate from getting you there unharmed. The less seriously they take us, the easier it will be to overwhelm any odds.
Octavius collapses back against the wagon, coughing and gagging into the bucket. He spits as though nausea fills his mouth, then holds his breath through three tiny sips that pass for a miserable swallow, swallow, swallow.

Edrin Vale
Aye, friend. I know you, and I know this performance. I will humour you. But tenfold is a debt now, not a flourish, and I will name every coin when this road is safe.
Edrin catches Octavius by the shoulder and jostles him into a lopsided sprawl, scowling toward the hedges as though burdened by a useless drunk. The strangers hear every complaint.

Edrin Vale
There, there, you witless wreck. Keep your bow buried and your mouth shut, or I’ll spend the whole journey explaining why I agreed to drag you along.

The Strangers
The old traveler is furious with him. Send word that the party is weaker than reported, but keep watching the road.
Edrin’s agreement is secured, but the promised tenfold repayment now hangs between them as a real obligation. He keeps Octavius slumped and harmless while the hidden watchers accept the performance.
“Friend, if you insist on counting coins, please acknowledge that I may do the same. I hoped this would be an exchange from one friend protecting another, but if you truly intend to audit payment... I would be sorry to do the same to you.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +4)

Octavius
Friend, if you insist on counting coins, acknowledge that I may count yours as well. I hoped this was friendship, not an audit. I would regret keeping accounts between us.
Octavius coughs into the bucket, spits, and forces three tiny sips to resemble a miserable swallow, swallow, swallow while holding his breath. Beneath the performance, his voice remains quietly earnest.

Edrin Vale
Aye, then count mine too. If you spend coin, effort, or risk for my sake, I will owe you honestly, and you may name what I owe.
Edrin’s scowl toward the hedges does not change, but his shoulder steadies Octavius more gently. The hidden watchers hear an irritated old traveler, not the warmth beneath his answer.

Edrin Vale
But this debt is not tenfold. I withdraw that foolishness. We will call it an exchange between friends, and I will keep enough coin aside to cover your first tavern when we reach safety.
That concrete promise gives Octavius a fair return without weakening the deception. Edrin resumes his loud complaints, while the strangers beyond the hedge receive only the picture of a burdened, quarrelsome party.

As I'm bent over and beading sweat while fake-heaving over the edge of the wagon, I continue speaking to Edrin, "Friend, I value you. If you want to call up accounts, I would not resent you for it. But I do mean it when I say I do not record any debts you may owe me, because I equally mean it when I say I would value your friendship equally for free.”

The exertion folds Octavius over the wagon’s edge. He coughs and gags into the bucket, spits as though nausea is making him salivate, then forces three tiny sips behind held breath to resemble a miserable swallow, swallow, swallow.

Edrin Vale
Aye, friend. I hear you. You are not keeping a ledger against me, and you value my company without weighing what it earns you.
Edrin’s hand steadies Octavius’s shoulder, his loud scowl easing into something gentler while he continues facing the hedges. To anyone listening, he remains an irritated companion tending a useless drunk.

Edrin Vale
Then let the account stay empty. I will call this friendship, freely given and freely returned, with no tally between us.
