Helena and Petar work back through the western trees, following the split fir and the three stones marking the alternate route. The forest remains dark and still around them.
Far to the east, scattered gunshots crack through the night. A second volley answers, then another, growing into a sustained exchange beyond the ruined roads.
Petar drops behind a fallen trunk and draws his pistol. Helena follows into cover, her injured side tightening as the sudden exertion disrupts her stride, and brings her own weapon ready.

The Voice Beyond the Door
Stay down. We do not know who is firing, or whether the exchange is moving toward the forest.
The portable radio beneath Petar’s coat crackles intermittently. Fragments of static rise and collapse, carrying no words before the receiver falls quiet again.

The Voice Beyond the Door
The warning is gone, but the danger is not. We wait until we can tell whether those shots are spreading west.
Beyond the trunk, muzzle flashes briefly stain the eastern horizon. Then the gunfire pauses, leaving only the radio’s faint hiss and the question of what comes next.
Director's note
Petar and Helena remain hidden. As we hid, a sharp pain rings inside Helena left eye. She covers her left eyes, trying to hide it from Petar.
Director's note
The nearby gun fire continues, as a sound of a strange loud roar can be heard in that direction.
“(Petar and Helena remain hidden. As we hid, a sharp pain rings inside Helena left eye. She covers her left eyes, trying to hide it from Petar.) (The nearby gun fire continues, as a sound of a strange loud roar can be heard in that direction.)”

Helena and Petar remain pressed behind the fallen trunk. Gunfire continues east, while the radio beneath Petar’s coat crackles through the trees.
The transmission breaks apart. Then a strange, heavy roar rolls from the direction of the gunfire, deeper than artillery and steady enough to tremble through the soil.
A sharp pain rings inside Helena’s left eye. She covers it quickly, but the sudden movement draws Petar’s attention before she can hide the gesture.

The Voice Beyond the Door
I saw that. Do not move yet. Whatever is making that sound may be coming closer.
Another volley answers from the east. The roar swells beneath it, and loose soil trickles down the trunk as Petar keeps his pistol ready and the forest shudders around them.

Helena Eichwald
Petar? We need to keep moving!
“Both Helena and Petar stay hidden and observe the eastern gunfire. Helena try to control her geas from flaring”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

Helena and Petar stay flattened behind the trunk, watching intermittent flashes pulse beyond the eastern trees. The roar rolls beneath the gunfire, trembling through the soil.
Pain lances through Helena’s left eye again. Shell shock catches the distant volleys and turns them into remembered pressure, making her concentration stutter as reddish-purple energy flickers beneath her skin.
The geas surges outward toward the eastern flashes, tugging at loose needles and dust. Helena clamps down with Iron Discipline, forcing the flare inward before it can betray their hiding place.
Her control holds. The forest settles, the lifted debris drops soundlessly, and the roar remains distant enough for them to keep observing the exchange without moving.

The Voice Beyond the Door
I saw the light under your hand. Are you still with me?
The effort leaves Helena’s composure thin and brittle. Her breath catches once, and Petar notices the hesitation, but neither of them leaves cover as another volley flickers beyond the trees.

Helena speaks to Petar: "It's nothing! We need to keep moving!"
“we both run back to town”

Helena and Petar break from cover and run toward Dresden, keeping low among the firs. Shell shock turns each gunshot into a remembered blast, making her steps falter as her injured side tightens.
Combat Reflexes take over before the next volley lands. Helena catches a root, twists clear of the falling trunk, and follows Petar through a narrow gap instead of stumbling into the open track.
The roar swells behind them. The geas lashes outward, reddish-purple energy snapping through branches and lifting a veil of needles. Helena forces it inward, but the backlash leaves her vision swimming and her legs briefly useless.

The Voice Beyond the Door
Down. We cannot reach town like this. The shots are spreading, and you can barely stand.
Their run ends short of the ruins, behind a sunken stone boundary. From there, Helena can see a drainage cut leading east toward the town wall, hidden from the direct road.

The Voice Beyond the Door
That cut may reach the outer wall. We crawl first, then move when the gunfire masks us. It is slower, but it gets us out of the forest.
✓ Quest Accepted
Reach Dresden’s outer wall
“I steady my breathing, then follow Petar east under the gunfire.”
SUCCESS (Good Health, rolled -1)

Helena steadies her breathing and follows Petar east beneath the gunfire. Shell shock turns each report into remembered blasts, but Iron Discipline keeps her moving while her injured side burns with every crouched step.
A burst cracks closer. Combat Reflexes carry Helena sideways before falling stones strike, and her hand closes around the Walther Volkspistole as she drops into the drainage cut behind Petar.

The Voice Beyond the Door
Keep low. The cut leads toward the town wall. We move when the next volley covers us.
The roar rolls through the ground. Das Bündnis lashes reddish-purple energy across the mud, lifting grit toward the gunfire, but Helena forces the flare inward before it exposes them.
The backlash buckles Helena’s legs and scrapes her palms against broken stone. She catches herself on the drainage wall, then crawls onward, breathing through the pain instead of stopping.
Petar reaches the eastern end first and signals her through. Together they emerge beneath the town wall, concealed from the direct road, with the gunfire still behind them.
Quest Complete
Reach Dresden’s outer wall
Director's note
Helena and Petar to find a concealed entrance.
Director's note
Helena speaks to Petar: "Try the tragbares radio. Find out what's happening out here."
Beneath the town wall, Petar finds a narrow breach hidden behind ivy and fallen brick. The opening descends into darkness, but it offers cover from the road and the distant gunfire.

Helena Eichwald
Try the tragbares radio. Find out what is happening out here.
Petar pulls the portable set from beneath his coat and crouches beside the breach. Helena keeps watch while a sharp pain rings through her left eye; she covers it, hiding the gesture from him.
Gunfire continues beyond the wall. Beneath it, a strange loud roar rolls across the ruins, deep enough to tremble through the stones as Petar turns the frequency dial.

The Voice Beyond the Door
The signal is breaking apart. I cannot tell whether that roar is part of the fighting, but we should get inside before the patrol sees us.
The radio collapses into static. Helena and Petar slip through the concealed breach into a buried service passage, where loose stones muffle their movement and the town wall seals them from the road.

The Voice Beyond the Door
Lieutenant Jannick! This is Volkov! Helena and I are hearing intense gunfire in our area. But we do not know what is happening. Please respond!
Petar works the dial through bursts of static. At last, a broken signal catches, thin and distant, while the roar beyond the wall continues beneath the gunfire.

Jannick
*Static*... Petar! Remain where you are with Helena... *static* The Russians have ordered a lockdown in and around the city. Reported gunfire is everywhere... We are trying to-
The line dies in a hard burst of static. Petar lowers the set, but the nearby firing continues, and the strange roar rolls through the buried passage until dust sifts from its ceiling.

The Voice Beyond the Door
The city is under lockdown. We cannot stay near this breach. Keep moving, and we may reach a safer section before the patrols seal the wall.
Petar shields the radio beneath his coat and leads Helena deeper along the service passage. Ahead, a warped iron hatch stands ajar, with a narrow stair rising toward a faint strip of night.

The Voice Beyond the Door
Wait. There is movement above the hatch. We listen first, then decide whether that stair gives us another way through the ruins.
