Sigfreid slips through the warped side door and leads Helena down a narrow stair beneath the western building. Dust drifts from collapsed masonry as they descend into the dark.

Sigfreid

Sigfreid

Mind your head. The cellar passage narrows after the stairs.

He guides her around fallen bricks and a broken beam, then presses aside a loose section of wall. Behind it, a concealed cellar door waits beneath flaking plaster.

The door opens into a cramped safe house with a single cot, folded blankets, ration tins, and a shielded oil lamp glowing low on a crate. Sigfreid ushers Helena inside.

Sigfreid

Sigfreid

Please let the shelter guards keep watching the yard. If they search this building, they will find the door eventually.

Sigfreid pulls the cellar door shut and slides a wooden bar into place. He checks it twice, then lowers himself beside the lamp, listening to the muffled shelter noise above.

Sigfreid

Sigfreid

You can sit there. The water is clean, and there is enough food for tonight. Did you get the parts for the radio?

I respond back to Sigfreid. "Ja, and more."

Director's note

I reveal the satchel, and spread the radio parts, radi9 codes and documents from the radio building from earlier

Ja, und mehr.

Helena lowers the canvas satchel beside the oil lamp and opens its brass clasp. She draws out the radio parts, frequency codes, folded maps, and documents recovered from the station.

The materials spread across the crate and floor in careful groups: valves and wire, the Funkfrequenzplan, penciled call-sign notes, maintenance maps, and the thin broadcasting folder with its torn corner.

Sigfreid

Sigfreid

You took all this from the station? The soldiers were watching every door.

Sigfreid crouches beside the lamp, his anxious gaze moving over the documents without touching them. Above, footsteps pass faintly across the shelter floor, then fade.

Sigfreid

Sigfreid

These codes could reach someone beyond Dresden. But if the station marked them, carrying them through another checkpoint could bring the patrol here.

He points to the folded maintenance map, stopping his finger just above the ink. The cramped safe house offers shelter for tonight, while the radio materials make the next move more dangerous.

I answer Sigfreid, saying: "Then we shall hide them in plain sight. We only need the codices—not a hollowed-out book."

Director's notewhole tale

I question Sigfreid closely, asking: "Have Liam and Merkel returned? Have they come back yet?"

Director's note

Sigfreid replies: "Liam has returned, yes. The next meeting is tonight at the Vanderman's beer hall."

Director's notewhole tale

Sigfreid replies "As for Merkel? Still no word back? He was supposed to send a signal tranmission as soon as he left the district... but no word sense."

Dann verstecken wir sie offen. Wir brauchen nur die Kodizes, kein ausgehöhltes Buch.

Sigfreid studies the spread of valves, wire, maps, and papers. He shifts the frequency manual beneath the torn broadcasting folder, arranging the dangerous material to resemble ordinary station records.

Sind Liam und Merkel zurückgekehrt? Sind sie wieder da?

Sigfreid

Sigfreid

Was Merkel betrifft? Noch immer keine Nachricht. Er sollte ein Signal senden, sobald er den Bezirk verlassen hatte, aber seitdem kam nichts.

The boy keeps his voice low and glances toward the barred cellar door. Above them, a cart rolls across the shelter yard, its wheels briefly masking the silence that follows.

Sigfreid

Sigfreid

Liam ist zurück, ja. Das nächste Treffen ist heute Abend in Vandermans Bierhalle.

Sigfreid taps the folded map beside the lamp, then points toward the marked streets leading from the shelter district. The radio materials remain hidden among harmless paperwork, but the evening meeting now gives them a destination.

Director's note

I answer Sigfreid, saying: "Merkel can take of himself. For now we wait for nightfall for the the meeting."

Director's note

"Tell Jannickwe got the parts to the radio fix, tell him to get when you can"

Merkel can take care of himself. For now, we wait until nightfall for the meeting. Tell Jannick we have the parts to repair the radio. Tell him to come when he can.

Sigfreid

Sigfreid

I will tell him, if I can. Jannick does not use this room directly, and there is no safe way to send word while the shelter yard is watched.

Sigfreid moves to a narrow crack beside the barred cellar door and gives the brief hand signal used by his network. He waits, then repeats it once. No answering signal comes from the passage beyond.

Sigfreid

Sigfreid

Nothing. He may be away from his route, or he may not know this signal. I cannot promise that the message will reach him before tonight.

He returns to the crate and covers the radio parts with the frequency manual and folded maps. The failed signal leaves no trace beyond the quiet passage, but Jannick remains uninformed.

Sigfreid

Sigfreid

We wait for nightfall, then go to Vandermans Bierhalle. Liam knows the way in. If Jannick comes, he will have to find us there.

Sigfreid lowers the shield over the oil lamp, leaving the coded papers hidden in plain sight among ordinary station records. Above, shelter traffic continues, while the meeting and the unanswered message draw closer together.
