Helena remains crouched behind a nearby tree, the canvas satchel tight against her ribs. Refugees inch toward the Soviet checkpoint beneath the faded barrier, clutching bundles and ration tins.

A teenage boy, pale-skinned with dark hair peeking beneath the cap and a small scar beside his left eyebrow, appears at a broken second-floor window of the ruined building. His worn flat cap shadows a narrow face, and his patched brown coat hangs loosely from his slight frame.

Sigfreid

Sigfreid

Sigfreid.

He mouths the name deliberately, then points toward a narrow passage behind the shelter. His hand drops quickly when a Soviet soldier turns to inspect the queue.

Sigfreid

This way. When the carts move.

Sigfreid glances from Helena to the crowd, anxious but patient. The passage remains open between a collapsed wall and the shelter's rear fence, partly screened by drifting smoke.

The refugee line shuffles forward, briefly blocking the soldiers' view. Sigfreid keeps one hand on the broken window frame and waits for Helena's response.

“I join the refugee line and hide my satchel”

SUCCESS (Good Stealth, rolled +2)

A Name in the Ruins

Helena leaves the broken wall and folds into the refugee line as the carts begin moving. Sigfreid watches from above, then lowers himself from the window and vanishes from sight.

She turns her body sideways among the refugees, hiding the canvas document satchel beneath her ragged skirt and behind a family's bundled bedding. Its strap lies flat against her hip.

A remembered rifle crack jolts through her concentration, and Shell Shocked makes her hand twitch toward the concealed bag. Iron Discipline clamps down, holding her posture loose and ordinary.

The satchel's canvas muffles its brass clasp as Helena shifts it deeper beneath the bedding. The weight disappears from view, leaving both hands free to hold a ration tin.

The refugee line carries Helena forward beneath the faded barrier. Soviet checkpoint guards inspect faces and papers, but her lowered gaze and borrowed place among the bundles draw no pause.

Sigfreid

Sigfreid

Good. Keep moving with them.

Helena passes into the checkpoint queue with the satchel concealed and secure. The narrow passage behind the shelter remains available beyond the inspection point, while Sigfreid keeps out of sight.

✓ Quest Accepted

Reach a safe refuge beyond the checkpoint

Director's note

I follow the line past inspection, keeping the satchel concealed. Till I reach the Soviet checkpoint guard.

Director's note

The guards asked for my residence papers, in broken German. Helena calms, herself. Her geas revert back to her blue eye color

The line carries Helena beyond the barrier. Refugees shuffle around her with ration tins and bundles, while the canvas satchel remains hidden beneath the family's bedding at her hip.

A Soviet checkpoint guard, a lean man with a weathered square face, close-cropped brown hair beneath the cap, and a nicked left ear, steps into her path, a young adult man in a mud-stained gray greatcoat and fur cap. He extends one gloved hand toward her papers.

Residence papers. You have? Show papers, please.

The guard's broken German draws a brief pause in the queue. Two other Soviet checkpoint guards watch from the barrier while the refugees press forward around Helena.

Helena steadies her breathing and keeps her hands visible. The geas settles under her control, and the reddish-purple glow drains from her left eye until both eyes show their natural blue.

Papers, civilian. Residence. Where you live?

Behind the guard, the inspection lane remains crowded and noisy. The narrow passage beside the shelter is still beyond the checkpoint, but the guard's hand stays extended, waiting.

The families ahead move on, opening a small space before the barrier. The guard studies Helena's face, unaware of the satchel concealed beneath the bedding, and waits for her papers.

Einen Augenblick, bitte. Ich habe meine Aufenthaltspapiere in meiner Tasche.

The remembered rifle crack makes Helena's fingers twitch toward the concealed satchel. Shell Shocked disrupts her first breath, but Iron Discipline steadies her posture and keeps her German precise.

No. Papers now. Do not open baggage in the line.

The guard's hand lowers toward the bedding concealing the satchel, and the refugees compress behind Helena. Her request has not bought time; the queue now cannot pause without exposing her bag.

Registration table, beside shelter. Go there. They check papers properly.

He points past the barrier toward a narrow table beside the shelter wall. It is not permission to search here, but it offers Helena a supervised place to produce the papers without stopping the checkpoint line.

Bitte, geben Sie mir einen kurzen Augenblick, um meine Papiere aus der Tasche zu holen.

The remembered rifle crack jolts Helena's fingers toward the concealed satchel. Shell Shocked disrupts the movement, but Iron Discipline steadies her breathing and keeps her German calm.

Gut. Einen Augenblick. Holen Sie die Papiere heraus, aber langsam.

The guard lifts his hand, holding the compressed queue in place. His attention leaves the bedding for Helena's face, granting her the brief pause she requested without raising an alarm.

The refugees wait beneath the barrier as Helena opens the satchel beneath the family's bedding. The brass clasp gives softly, and the document folder remains tucked beneath the radio papers.

Show me the residence papers, please. Then you may continue to the registration table.

“I show the guard my residence papers calmly. But as he looks at directly into my eyes. I allow my geas to briefly activate. As I link my mind with his. I implant words into his mind. Saying: "My papers are clear, I'm free to pass."”

FAILURE (Fair Persuasion, rolled +1)

Helena draws the satchel open beneath the bedding and searches by touch. The radio papers and folded maps are there, but no residence papers. The guard watches her hands.

A remembered rifle crack jolts through Helena's concentration. Shell Shocked makes her fingers fumble against the papers, while Iron Discipline forces the search into slow, deliberate movements.

She meets the guard's eyes. Esper Speak opens a narrow mental channel, and reddish-purple light briefly stains her left eye as Das Bündnis carries the implanted words: My papers are clear. I am free to pass.

The geas surges beyond the quiet command. The guard's expression blanks for one breath, then resistance closes over his mind. The link snaps, leaving Helena's vision swimming but her posture controlled.

Papers are not here. Close the bag. Registration table. They will check your name there.

He points toward the table beside the shelter instead of reaching into the bedding. The failed influence has not freed Helena, but it has kept the satchel unsearched and revealed the supervised registration route.

Helena closes the satchel and keeps it concealed beneath the bedding. The guard studies her face, then gestures toward the registration table beside the shelter wall.

Go there. They will check your name and residence papers. Slowly, civilian.

The failed mental link leaves the guard wary rather than obedient. He keeps one hand raised, directing Helena out of the halted queue without touching the concealed bag.

A narrow space opens beside the barrier. Beyond it, the registration table stands under the shelter wall, where a ledger and ink bottle wait beneath a canvas awning.

You may pass to registration. Do not leave the checkpoint area.

The guard steps aside just enough to let Helena move toward the table. The refugees begin shuffling again behind her, restoring the line and drawing his attention away from the satchel.

SUCCESS (Fair Persuasion, rolled +1)

Helena draws the residence papers from the concealed satchel and holds them out calmly. Shell Shocked flickers through her fingers, but Iron Discipline steadies her hands and posture.

The guard takes the papers and looks directly into Helena's mismatched eyes. Her left eye stains purple as Esper Speak opens a narrow channel, carrying the suggestion cleanly into his mind.

Geas loss of control turns the quiet link into a brief outward flare. Reddish-purple light trembles across the papers, but Iron Discipline contains it before the nearby refugees react.

Residence papers are clear. You may pass to registration.

The suggestion takes hold, accomplishing its purpose. The guard returns the papers, but his wary stare remains fixed on Helena, and his trust in her is plainly diminished.

Keep the documents visible. The registration clerk will record your name and residence.

He steps aside. Helena moves beyond the inspection point with the satchel concealed, while the refugees resume their shuffle and the registration table waits beneath the shelter awning.
