Adventure of Nanera 1

Nanera slips through the fissure and steps into the grotto. Cold mist beads on her monk dress, and the air tastes of stone and deep water. Ahead, Ardis stands in the center of the chamber, braced against a vortex of blackened chi rising from the earth.

He widens his stance, one hand planted toward the pulse below, the other angled to shield the path behind him. Crystals in the floor catch the glow of the corruption and throw it back in sharp green shards.

Nanera settles beside him, bamboo staff low, her breath measured and steady. The vortex stutters, then presses harder, as if testing the shape of her balance against his.

The dark swirl tightens around a jagged seam in the floor, where cold water and mineral light mingle. From below, a faint pulse answers, slow and patient, waiting for Nanera and Ardis to make the first move.

Nanera draws a slow breath and lets her ki settle into the vortex. The black current shivers, then tightens around her calm instead of clawing at it.

The corruption thins to a narrow spiral, its edge losing color as if rinsed in clear spring water. The jagged seam beneath it is revealed fully, no longer hidden by the churn.

He shifts with her, one palm hovering near the seam while the mist around his boots begins to drift downward instead of up.

A faint pulse rises from below, then steadies. The draft from the hidden passage cools, but no longer reeks of rot.
