The passage spills Eladrin Világ and his companions into the Starlit Court, where marble gleams like frozen moonlight and arches rise into a sky that is not a sky at all. Behind them, the torn opening from the library flickers, thinning at the edges.

Vaerith the Unwritten waits ahead on the dais, perfectly still, as if he has been expecting this exact step across the threshold. The air around him shivers with quiet, measured magic.

The way back is failing fast.

You arrived after all. I wondered whether curiosity or caution would win.

You do not get to stand there like this was all meant to happen, Vaerith.

He is doing that calm thing again. I hate that calm thing.

Kaelith tightens his grip on the ledger, and the star-bright passage behind them shrinks to a trembling seam. Vaerith’s gaze settles on Eladrin Világ, patient and unreadable, as if the next answer belongs to him alone.

I demand Vaerith speak plainly about the ledger, threaten him!

Speak plainly, Vaerith. About the ledger, and about what you think fate is.

Eladrin’s words ring across the marble, sharp enough to stir the hanging starlight. His staff lifts by a fraction, not striking, but making the threat clear.

Plainly, then. The ledger is a wound someone tried to bind with lies. I unpicked the binding because the lie had already begun to rot.

And fate?

Vaerith the Unwritten

Vaerith the Unwritten

Fate is not a chain to break. It is a current. Struggle hard enough, and you only learn where it drags.

Behind Eladrin, the shimmering seam of the passage gutters lower, while Kaelith’s ledger pulses once, bright and nervous in his grip.

Then tell him the rest, Vaerith. Tell him whether the current can be changed at all.
