The library goes still again. Cold water laps at the stone steps, and the starlit glow from the ledger softens the ruin into silver and blue.

Kaelith keeps the bundle close, careful now, his panic thinning into guarded relief. Caelir eases his stance by the stair mouth, eyes still watchful, but no longer braced to strike.

Liora kneels beside the ledger, fingertips tracing the singed edge of its oilcloth. Her expression shifts as she studies the binding, not hurried, just intent.

This was hidden with care, then disturbed with equal care. Not a theft, maybe. A warning.

If someone sealed this away beneath Oryn, what were they afraid would happen when it was opened?

She looks up at Eladrin, the question hanging between them like breath in winter air. For a moment, the ledger’s faint light reflects in her eyes, and the old hurt there is joined by something quieter, more uncertain.

We keep chasing the shape of what might come next. Tell me, are we still uncovering history, or are we walking into the thing that made it?

Defend against the entity from the archives

I lower my staff, but keep its starlight burning. “That is precisely what I intend to find out. But I have spent enough of my life mistaking warnings for instructions.” I look from the ledger to the dark stairwell. “Do not open it.” Then I step toward the stairs and raise my voice into the flooded depths. “You knew we took the ledger. If you are its guardian rather than its destroyer, then speak. What were you protecting it from?”

Eladrin lowers his staff, but the light at its tip keeps burning cold and steady. His words go into the flooded dark, and the stair mouth answers with a slow hush, as if the water itself is listening.

From below, something shifts. Not a rush, not a strike, just a presence gathering itself in the depth between the stones.

Not guardian. Not destroyer. Listener.

We kept it from the hands that would name it finished.

Liora straightens from the ledger, her eyes narrowing as the meaning settles over the singed cloth. Kaelith tightens his grip, but he does not pull it away. Caelir remains at the stairs, still and ready.

Then it was not hidden from theft alone. It was hidden from use.

The ward was unpicked, and that matters. Someone knew how to choose what opened here.

The ledger gives off a faint pulse in Kaelith's arms, and the chamber seems to lean toward the answer. For the first time, the fear around it has a shape.
