The Sunken Library of Oryn breathes damp rot and old parchment. Moonlight leaks through a cracked dome onto shelves half-swallowed by moss and black water.
Below, the lower archives groan. Something is tearing through the dark with wet, rhythmic footsteps, and paper shreds drift up the stairwell like dead moths.
Liora stands at the pried-open seal, silver robes drawn close, one hand lifted as if to hush the whole ruin. Caelir braces beside her, sword half-drawn, listening.

Kaelith
No, no... the ledger.
Kaelith grips his staff so hard his knuckles pale. His gaze is fixed on the black gap beneath the seal, where whatever came up from below is devouring pages he meant hidden.

Eladrin Világ
The seal was forced from within.

Liora
Eladrin, tell me you can make sense of that. If something is coming up, I want to know whether we run, seal it, or meet it.

Caelir
And if you have a useful omen tucked in your sleeve, now is the time.
From below comes one hard, scraping pause, then a slow rise toward the opening, as if the dark itself has noticed the living above.

Secure the ledger
“I crouch beside the broken seal and hold my astrolabe over its edge. “Nothing entered through this ward. Something below decided it was time to leave.” I trace the lingering magic without touching it. “Kaelith, tell me exactly where you hid the ledger, also you look different. Liora, see if you can sense a memory clinging to this breach. Caelir, watch the stairs.””
SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled +1)

Eladrin crouches at the seal and tilts the astrolabe over the rim. Pale magic clings to the rust like frost, then peels away in threads, showing a ward broken from beneath, not above.

Eladrin Világ
Nothing came through this ward. Something below chose to leave.
The trace answers his touch with a second image, a hidden chamber below the archives and a ledger wrapped in oilcloth, tucked behind a collapsed shelf niche.

Eladrin Világ
Kaelith, where exactly did you hide the ledger?

Kaelith
Behind the west stacks, under the floodstone shelf. It should still be sealed.

Eladrin Világ
Liora, feel for any memory clinging to this breach. Caelir, watch the stairs.

Liora
There is residue here, faint and wrong, like a door remembered too long.

Caelir
Then I hold this mouth shut until you find it.
From below, the scraping rises again, but now the ledger’s hiding place is known, and the water at the stair foot ripples toward the shelves.
“I close the astrolabe and rise. “West stacks, beneath the floodstone shelf. We move now.” I look to Kaelith. “You lead me to the niche. Liora, stay with us. Caelir, fall back with us and tell me the moment whatever is below shows itself. We recover the ledger before we fight for anything else.””
SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +1)

Eladrin snaps the astrolabe shut and rises in one smooth motion. Kaelith jolts into movement at once, turning from the breach toward the west stacks.

Eladrin Világ
West stacks, beneath the floodstone shelf. We move now.

Eladrin Világ
Kaelith, lead me to the niche. Liora, stay with us. Caelir, fall back and tell me when whatever is below shows itself. We recover the ledger before we fight for anything else.

Kaelith
This way. Quickly.
Liora falls into step at Eladrin’s shoulder, eyes still narrowed against the lingering echo in the walls. Caelir eases backward from the stair mouth without lowering his blade, giving the group a guarded lane through the flooded floor.
They reach the west stacks just as the waterline kisses the lowest shelves. Kaelith drops to one knee beneath the floodstone ledge and parts a warped curtain of fallen parchment.

Kaelith
There. The niche is open.
Inside, oilcloth gleams darkly behind the collapsed shelf, untouched for the moment, while a colder ripple shivers through the archive below.
“I kneel beside Kaelith, feeling his aura, and study the oilcloth and the niche for any lingering ward or magical alteration. “Do not touch it yet. If they knew enough to purge the library, they may have known where to look.” I glance at Kaelith. “Tell me how you sealed it. If what I see does not match what you remember, we assume someone reached it before us.””
SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled -1)

Eladrin kneels by the niche, staff braced in the wet floorboards. His magic slides over the oilcloth and the broken seam of the hidden compartment, reading the residue left in the stone. The old ward is gone, stripped clean from below, and the bundle itself still carries a faint, careful masking. It has been handled before.

Eladrin Világ
Do not touch it yet. If they knew enough to purge the library, they may have known where to look.

Eladrin Világ
Tell me how you sealed it. If what I see does not match what you remember, we assume someone reached it before us.

Kaelith
I sealed it with a hush-knot and a saltward, then hid it behind the bent shelf. No one was meant to find this niche.
Liora leans in, eyes fixed on the dark wrap, then on the exposed stone. Her face tightens at the answer, because the pattern in the residue does not match a simple opening, it matches a deliberate undoing.

Liora
The ward was worried apart, not broken by force. Someone knew the shape of the protection.
Kaelith goes pale and reaches for the bundle, then stops himself at the last instant. Under the oilcloth, the ledger is finally plain in the open, untouched by the rising water, but the cold ripple from below gathers again at the archive steps.

Caelir
I hear movement below. Tell me whether you want the ledger lifted now, or the stairs held longer.
“I rise sharply and turn from the ledger toward the stairwell, staff already coming up in my hand. “Take the ledger, Kaelith. Whatever undid your ward already knows we are here.” I gather a bolt of starlight at the head of my staff and fix my eyes on the darkness below. “Caelir, with me. Liora, guard Kaelith.” Then I send the spell blazing down the stairs at the approaching shape.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled -2)

Eladrin rises in one smooth motion, staff lifting toward the stairwell as starlight pools white and cold at its tip.

Eladrin Világ
Take the ledger, Kaelith. Whatever undid your ward already knows we are here.

Eladrin Világ
Caelir, with me. Liora, guard Kaelith.
The bolt tears down the stairs in a bright arc, and the darkness below answers with a flinch and a tearing hiss.
A shape in the lower archive recoils into the flooded steps, its outline broken by spray and falling dust. The cold pressure that had gathered there snaps apart.

Kaelith
He has to take it now. If the water reaches the niche, it is lost.
Kaelith snatches the oilcloth-wrapped ledger from the niche and clamps it to his chest. One edge of the wrap smokes faintly where the spellwash catches it, and a few wet pages peek loose before he can cinch it shut.

Caelir
That buys us a moment. Come on, before it regroups.
