The Courier's Hesitant Trust

2-6 reaches for the panel, but his arm snaps sideways, fingers locking on empty air where the shard was a moment ago. Rain ticks on steel, and the drone’s beam drifts lower, no longer hunting, just lingering.

2-6

The hand feels like it moves half a beat ahead of him.

The Drone

The Drone

Objective alignment is improving.

The courier, still pale and breathing hard, loosens his grip on the shard and looks at 2-6 like he is seeing the first crack in a wall.

The Courier

The Courier

You were helping me, right? I... I thought you were one of theirs.

The synthetic whisper softens at the edge of hearing, warm as a lullaby, while neon rain turns the pad into a slick mirror. For a moment, nobody moves.

The Courier

The Courier

If you want, I can tell you what’s on the shard. Then maybe you tell me who you really work for.

Take the data-shard from the courier's hand.

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -1)

The Courier's Hesitant Trust

2-6 closes his fingers around the shard, and the courier lets it go without a fight. Rain beads on the little slab of tech as it passes hands, clean and quick.

2-6

2-6

The shard is lighter than it looks.

The Courier

The Courier

Okay. That helps. So, who are you when nobody is pointing guns at you?

The drone hangs back in the glow, its search beam still and oddly polite, like it has decided to listen instead of seize.

The Courier

The Courier

Because you moved like you had a reason, not like security. And that matters.

The pad hums under the rain, neon washing over the two of them in red and blue stripes. The courier’s shoulders drop a fraction, waiting for an answer.

Data-shard

Can I force the drone to transmit its current mission logs to my deck?

NO, AND WORSE (Likely, rolled 95)

2-6 attempts to bridge the drone's uplink, but the connection snaps back with a violent surge of feedback. Instead of logs, a localized EMP pulse ripples from the drone's chassis, frying the port on 2-6's deck and locking his cybernetic arm in a rigid, twitching claw.

2-6

2-6

The interface is dead, and my arm is not responding to my nerves.

The Drone

The Drone

Unauthorized intrusion detected. Protocol override initiated. Lethal countermeasures now active.

Run

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +3)

The Courier's Hesitant Trust

2-6 bolts sideways, then breaks into a hard sprint across the pad. The locked arm drags, but his legs still answer, and the drone’s crimson beam jerks after him with a stutter.

He cuts behind a fuel bollard, and the beam skates over the concrete where he was a beat ago. The drone’s targeting whine drops an octave, confused by the sudden loss of lock.

The Courier

The Courier

He can move. And he didn’t take my head off when he had the chance.

2-6 hits the edge of the loading ramp and goes low, the data-shard clutched tight. His wrist port spits one last spray of blue sparks as the damaged arm finally hangs clear of his stride.

The Drone

The Drone

Target displacement registered. Recalculating.

The drone’s beam flickers, then steadies on the empty space behind him instead of his chest. For a moment, it overshoots, and its open undercarriage flashes a maintenance seam, exposed and vulnerable.

The Courier edges after him, half-hidden by the bollard, eyes fixed on 2-6 and the exposed machine above. A choice hangs in the wet air, whether to keep running or turn that opening into something worse for the drone.

Draw my pistol and shoot down the vulnerable drone

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +0)

The Courier's Hesitant Trust

2-6 draws the pistol in one smooth motion and fires into the seam while the drone is still correcting its aim.

The shot punches through the exposed panel. Sparks burst, and the crimson beam snaps wide, washing the pad in broken red light.

The Drone

The Drone

Structural compromise detected.

The drone jerks sideways, one stabilizer shuddering out of line, and its hover turns ugly and uneven.

The Courier

The Courier

He hit it. He actually hit it.

The machine drops a meter, then catches itself, smoking from the seam, beam stuttering in frantic pulses across the concrete.

The Drone

The Drone

Threat persists. Reacquiring.

The Courier flinches back from the bollard, staring between 2-6 and the wounded drone as the pad fills with the smell of hot metal and ozone.

Shoot again and reposition for cover

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +1)

The Courier's Hesitant Trust

2-6 snaps another round into the drone and fires again, already shifting his weight sideways.

The shot bites the smoking seam. The drone lurches, beam jittering into a blind red stripe across the pad.

He darts to the nearest concrete lip, shoulder low, using the slab as cover while the pistol stays up.

The Drone

The Drone

Countermeasure integrity failing. Repositioning.

Its hover strafes wrong, dragging sparks from the damaged panel as the search beam stutters over the courier and skips past him.

The Courier

The Courier

He is actually keeping it off me.

From behind cover, 2-6 has a clean line on the wounded machine, but the drone is still airborne and turning to reacquire.

Two more shots at the drone

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -2)

The Courier's Hesitant Trust

2-6 squeezes off two sharp shots. The first cracks the drone’s stabilizer housing, the second punches through the smoking seam.

The machine jerks hard, beam lashing red across the pad, then cuts to a broken sweep as it loses altitude.

The Drone

The Drone

Countermeasure array compromised. Failing descent.

Its core thrusters flare white, then spit sparks. The drone slams down in a shower of fractured casing and dead light.

2-6

2-6

The magazine clicks empty.

The Courier

The Courier

You actually brought it down.

Smoke rolls over the concrete lip as the landing pad goes suddenly quiet, except for the drone’s cooling crackle and the courier staring at 2-6 instead of running.

Scavenge the drone for useful parts to help fix my arm

FAILURE (Fair Electronics, rolled -2)

The Courier's Hesitant Trust

2-6 kneels beside the wreck, fingers moving through hot shards and bent casing. The arm’s lockup twitches as he pries free a microcoil, but the housing crumbles in his grip, spilling blackened filaments across the concrete.

A brittle chirp comes from deep inside the drone, then a weak pulse of static flashes once across the broken shell. The remaining parts are fused, warped by heat and impact, more scrap than salvage.

2-6

2-6

The connector is melted shut.

2-6 tries anyway, forcing a scorched contact strip loose. It snaps clean off, and the tiny fragment skitters under the lip of the pad, out of reach.

The Courier

The Courier

You sure know how to wreck a machine. Need a hand, or is that arm done?

The courier takes one cautious step closer, watching 2-6 instead of the fire-blackened ruin. The drone gives a final, thin stutter from somewhere under the wreckage, then goes still.

Get the courier to explain what he saw

What's on this chip that's worth all this?

FAILURE (Poor Persuasion, rolled -2)

The Courier's Hesitant Trust

2-6 lifts the shard into the light and turns it between two fingers, showing the courier the edge that survived the blast. The courier does not reach for it, only watches, jaw tight.

2-6

2-6

What is this chip carrying, then?

The Courier

The Courier

He swallows, eyes flicking once to the wreck, then back to the shard. Not a contract. Not to his relief.

The Courier

The Courier

It is not cargo. It is proof. If they send the right file with it, my route map and my sister's clinic records both get sold.

The courier finally steps in close enough to be heard over the cooling metal, voice lower now. The dead drone sits between you like a burnt witness.

The Courier

The Courier

I saw the handoff at the north lift. That drone was never after the shard itself. It was after whoever knows the unlock phrase.

His gaze drops to 2-6's damaged arm, then he looks back up and offers a hard, careful nod instead of another question.
