Rain hisses on the maintenance lip as 2-6 hauls himself up beside the flickering ad panel. Below, Jax stays in the alley, drawing the hunters’ lights away with a clatter of movement and static.

Jax
Move. The hub is above you. Do not let them box you in.
Inside 2-6’s arm, the nano-bots spike hard, then settle into a cold, precise rhythm. The dampening field still blunts the alley, but the new signal is stronger now, threaded straight through the maintenance stack.

2-6
The hub is close.
A hidden panel along the wall unlocks with a soft mechanical click, not from any hand on the panel, but from 2-6’s own altered implant answering the command. The vent route lights up in sterile blue, a perfect path for a machine, not a person.

The Courier
2-6, wait. If you go in now, they will have your trail.
Far below, Kest’s voice cuts through the rain from the sealed run, tight with frustration, while hunter beams sweep closer at the alley mouth. The nano-bots keep broadcasting, calm and steady, as if they already know the outcome.

Kest
There you are. Come down, runner. Or crawl into the hub and make it easy.
2-6 stands at the threshold of the ventilation hub, the route open, the hunters converging, the choice his alone.
“Surrender”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +1)

2-6 lowers the vape and opens both empty hands to the rain. The broadcasted route keeps pulsing through his arm, but his stance softens, surrender made plain.

Kest
There. Smart move. Stay still and nobody gets hurt.
Kest pushes off the bulkhead and starts toward the ladder mouth, wrist rig raised, eyes locked on 2-6’s chest. Jax stays below, breathing hard, ready to pull heat the second Kest commits.

The Courier
Easy... just do not let them take him intact.
The dampening hum thickens between the alleys, flattening the neon glare. 2-6’s cut palm leaves a dark smear on the wet lip as he steps down to the exposed landing point the hunters demand.

Jax
Good. Keep your head down. I will draw the rest away.
Below, the first search lights swing past Jax and snag on the empty space where 2-6 was a breath ago. The hub route still broadcasts, steady and cold, while Kest closes the distance to take him.
“A deep haul on the vape and kneel with hands in my head”
FAILURE (Fair Willpower, rolled -2)

2-6 drags in a deep hit, then folds to one knee on the wet metal. His hands press to his head, elbows tight, while the rain hisses on the lip around him.
The vape glow slips through his fingers and his pulse stutters, but the spasm does not take him. Instead, the tremor runs under the skin and out into the open air, controlled, contained.

2-6
The hub route is still live in his arm.

Jax
Easy. Breathe through it. You are still here.

The Courier
That is what they keep trying to take, isn’t it? Not just his body.
Below, the dampening hum swallows the alley edges. Kest slows by the sealed bulkhead, his wrist rig flickering as the broadcast line points past 2-6 and into the open route above.
On the maintenance lip, the cut on 2-6’s palm beads dark against the rain. The ladder cut beside him stays exposed, and the path forward remains mapped in cold light.
“If I'm not your target then keep going”
FAILURE (Poor Persuasion, rolled -1)

2-6
If I am not your target, keep going.
The words cut clean through the rain and the dampening hiss, aimed at Kest instead of the alley. 2-6 keeps his hands up, making the open route look like a trap for someone else.

Kest
You want me to believe that while your arm is still lighting the map?

Jax
He is not lying about the route, Kest. He is just not the prize you think he is.

The Courier
He is trying to buy time with words. That is still trying.
Kest's wrist rig jitters, then steadies on the brighter signature below the lip. He does not move in for 2-6, but his attention shifts, already recasting the hunt around the alley instead of the ledge.

Kest
Fine. Stay there, then. If you are bait, I can work with bait.
The line hardens. 2-6's plea does not clear him, it only tells Kest exactly how to use him, and the ladder cut beside the lip stays open, waiting for a different choice.
“I slip down the ladder cut towards kest”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +1)

2-6 drops from the lip in one clean slide, boots skimming wet metal as the ladder cut swallows him out of Kest’s sightline. Rain stripes past his face and the neon smear below rushes up fast.
He lands in a low crouch beside the sealed corridor edge, close enough for Kest’s wrist rig to paint over him. The cut on his palm flashes red when he plants a hand to steady himself.

Kest
There you are.
Kest pivots toward the movement, shoulders squaring, but the dampening hum still blurs the alley’s readouts. His focus snaps from the upper lip to the fresh trace at ground level.

Jax
Move, 2-6. I have the higher sightline.

The Courier
He made it down. Now what?
Below the neon glare, the alley holds its breath around the three of them, Kest tracking, Jax braced and breathing hard, The Courier half-shadowed against the wall. The ladder cut stays open behind 2-6, and Kest waits for his next move.
“Is Kest still tracking my nanobot signal?”
YES (VeryLikely, rolled 44)

2-6
The wrist rig is still locked on me. The signal is bleeding through the dampening field.

Kest
You can run, but your own blood is screaming your location to my rig. You are not going anywhere.
“Then take me in. You got me.”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +1)

2-6 eases his hands up, slow and visible, letting the wet alley light catch the cut on his palm. His voice stays flat. He steps into surrender like it is a tool, not a defeat.

2-6
Then take me in. You got me.

Kest
Kest lowers the wrist rig a fraction, eyes still hard on the pulsing trace. "Smart. Stay where I can see you."

Jax
Jax, breathing rough from the lip above, gives a short, almost disbelieving laugh. "That is the first sane thing anyone has done tonight."

The Courier
The Courier leans out from cover, rain streaking his face, and blurts, "Don't let him fold you into their system. Not like this."

Jax
Jax angles their glowing sensor lenses toward 2-6, voice softer now. "You really know how to make a room choose a side."

The Courier
The Courier hesitates, then adds, quieter, "If you walk with him, at least stay human long enough to come back."
“I don't remember enough anyways. Why am I even running?”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +2)

2-6
I don't remember enough anymore. Why am I even running?
The question hangs in the wet air, and for a beat the alley seems to listen. The red pulse on Kest's wrist rig keeps time against the rain, steady and cold.

Jax
Because somebody trained you to run until you forgot the reason. That is what they do.

The Courier
Or because you keep choosing the part of you they can't script.
Jax swallows against a breathless wince, one hand braced on the lip, the other half-lifted as if to answer a point made years ago. The Courier's hesitation softens into something almost steady.

Kest
Running is only a problem if you lose the trail. You haven't lost it yet.
The cut on 2-6's palm shines dark in the neon wash, and the dampening hum presses close enough to flatten every other sound. Kest eases his wrist rig down, not striking, just waiting for the answer in 2-6's face.

Deal with the incoming hunters

The red pulse on 2-6's wrist dimmed under Kest's glove as the hunters moved past, blind to the handoff.

2-6
I am here. That is what was made.

The Courier
You made it to the end. I am sorry it had to look like this.

Jax
Yeah. But you're still you, somewhere under all that.

Kest
Custody confirmed. Asset integrated.
The network took 2-6 whole, and the search lights found only an empty alley. Jax and the Courier vanished into the city's noise, carrying the shape of what was lost. Kest logged the transfer and walked away with a clean result, while the man inside the machine went silent.
