The Elder kneels in the brightening shallows, one hand sunk to the wrist in cold water. Beneath his fingers, the second rune-cut glows faintly from the mud like a buried eye opening.

Two marks... a pair. Not a snare set once, but a gate meant to answer itself.

He drags his fingertips from the cut to the shard already swallowed into Elidi’s skin, then back again. The shapes match. The villagers lean forward as if the air itself has tightened.

If the shard is one half, then what is the second? A lock, or a key?

The Elder lifts his head toward Elidi, fear thinning into hard-won clarity. Behind him, the spring runs clearer, but the rune beneath it now feels less like a blessing and more like a measure of what her kind can be bound by.

Elidi, if this place was built to contain your kind, then the water is not innocent. Show us whether it was a prison that failed, or a sanctuary that opened.

Elidi removes the second rune-cut from the earth, and adheres it to herself.

Elidi lowers her huge hand into the cold shallows. The mud parts under her fingers, and the second rune loosens with a soft, resisting pull.

The cut lifts free in one dark slice of earth and light, water sheeting off it as she raises it from the spring bed.

The rune meets her skin and sinks into the stone with a muted pulse, as if the spring itself recognizes the touch.

A key... not a seal. It waits for a giant's hand to wake it.

Then our stories were wrong all along.

The faint glow in the mud goes out. What remains in the spring is only clear water, the old threshold now quiet and open.

If it answers to her, what else in this grove has been waiting?

Elidi drinks from the spring, and the water goes down cold and clean, tasting of wet stone and fern root. The surface trembles around her hand, then settles as if recognizing her.

The Elder

The Elder

It does not reject her. It answers.

Across the bank, the Elder leans back from the emptied rune-bed, his grip easing on nothing at all. The ceremonial staff lies in the mud beside the water, ignored for the first time.

So the spring was never a prison by itself. It was a threshold, and only the giant could finish opening it.

Then our old fear kept us from the truth for generations.

A warning can shelter as well as bind. We called it one thing because we were afraid to learn the other.

The clear water runs past Elidi's hand in a soft, steady hush. Behind the reeds, the damaged fence post at the forest edge stands crooked and silent, while the second rune-cut remains gone from the mud, leaving only plain earth and moving light.
