Elidi enters the narrowing passage, and the dark swallows the last of the grove’s daylight behind her. Dry stone and old dust press close, while a scraping rhythm rolls ahead, slow and heavy.

Her presence draws a faint glow from ore veins in the ceiling. The chamber beyond opens wide, circular and ancient, its floor traced with a ring of worn sigils and broken stone husks.

At the far side, something unseen drags itself across the flagstones. The scrape stops. Silence answers her, thick as buried earth.

The floor markings are older than the passage.

A shape shifts in the gloom, just beyond the light, not quite a body, not quite a shadow. The air tightens around Elidi as if the chamber is waiting for recognition.

Stone giant... you come at last. The gate has opened because you were found.

The scraping begins again, now circling the chamber, as though the thing within is measuring her and the hidden heart of the place.

Elidi steps in, and the chamber answers by feeling smaller around her. The scraping hushes, then resumes from a new angle, circling the sigils like a wary beast that has lost its cover.

A seam of darkness peels away from the far wall, and a stone shape stands revealed at last, hunched and ancient, its joints locked with dust and age. Chips of old masonry shake loose from its shoulders.

Now I see your measure, giantess.

The Unseen Watcher

Too large to ignore, too steady to dismiss.

The thing drags one heavy limb over the floor, and the sound is wrong for a living body, more grinding hinge than flesh. Broken stone husks tremble at its touch.

Then the construct straightens by a handspan, enough to challenge the silence, enough to show it is no corpse but a dormant guardian rousing from ages of sleep.
