The village square loosens into evening calm. A flat stone table waits with bowls of stew, torn bread, and a clay jug sweating in the cool air. The Elder gestures Elidi toward the seat of honor, not as a marvel, but as a guest.

Come sit, Elidi. You have earned a place among us tonight.

Villagers edge closer in a respectful ring. One sets a bowl near the table’s far side, then looks up at Elidi’s towering shape with open curiosity instead of fear.

Do giant hands find small bowls awkward? We can bring a wider one.

The Elder’s mouth lifts at that, and his shoulders ease. He watches Elidi with the careful interest of someone trying to learn a new weather pattern.

Tell us, then, what do you notice first when you walk a place like ours?

The stew smells of thyme and onions, and the stone bench is broad enough for her weight.

Another Villager slides a fresh loaf closer to the table edge, while the square hums softly around them, waiting for Elidi’s answer.

Elidi takes the bowl in both huge hands and settles the first spoonful carefully to her mouth. Steam curls past her fingers, and the villagers lean in as if the simple act is a small miracle.

She eats, slow and deliberate, then lets her gaze travel over the square. The bread, the stone table, the soft hush of waiting faces, it all gathers into one gentle whole.

The first thing I notice is how cozy it feels here.

The Elder

The Elder

Cozy is a kind word for a hard place to live. I will take it gladly.

Then you see us kindly. That is a comfort.

A few shoulders loosen. The Villager who brought the bread smiles into the table, almost bashful, while the other glances between Elidi and the lanternless cottages as if hearing their own home anew.

Stay a little longer after the bowls are empty. The square is better with your eyes in it.
