Captain Silas lifts the lantern and steps away from the center of the counting house, his boot tapping once more against the stone. The little room glows gold, all ledgers, dust, and a heavy desk shoved half aside as if something was searched in haste.
Merelia slips through the rear doorway just as Silas turns. He is calm, but not relaxed, and the angle of his shoulders says he expects company with teeth.

Captain Silas
You came by the back. Good. I was beginning to think I would have to settle this alone.
The lantern light catches the brass gull ring in his hand for a heartbeat before he closes his fist around it. Somewhere deeper in the house, a chair scrapes across the floor.

Merelia
The room has already been searched.

Captain Silas
Merek is here, or was. I arrived ahead of you to quiet the debt, but he left signs enough for a sharper eye.
Silas angles his body toward the sound below, lantern raised, as if weighing whether to share the next truth or keep it to himself.
“baseva comes to find merek”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +4)

Merelia moves past the lantern glow and scans the room in one sharp sweep. The overturned chair by the stairs, the scuffed floor, the open ledger spread under dust, all of it points the same way.

Merelia
The trail runs below, not here.
Her gaze catches on a thin smear of fresh mud on the stair edge, then on a second boot print half-hidden near the wall. Someone has gone down recently, and not alone.

Captain Silas
You see it now. Merek is using the lower store room, and he did not expect company this early.
Silas opens his fist at last, showing the brass gull ring still warm in his palm. Beneath it rests a folded tally slip with a south-shore seal, pressed flat as if meant to be missed.

Captain Silas
I meant to hand you that after I was certain of the room. Some men leave traps. Some leave witnesses.
Below them, a door unlatches with a soft click, and a voice Merelia does not know murmurs from the dark stairs, close enough to matter.
“I go down after Merek”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

Merelia takes the stairs in silence, one hand skimming the rail as the dark swallows the lantern glow behind her. The mud trail is fresh underfoot, leading down into the lower store room.

Captain Silas
Careful. If Merek meant to run, he left someone else to greet him.
She keeps going, and the last stair opens onto a cramped room of casks, rope, and splintered crates. A second figure stands half-turned by the back wall, caught in the lantern's spill.

Merek
So. The cat comes herself.

Merelia
Merek.
Captain Silas remains above on the stair, framed by the opening like a watchful seal on the door. His hand lowers, not quite resting on his weapon, not quite at ease.

Captain Silas
There he is. Now we can all speak plainly.
