A Moment of Quiet Refuge

Below deck, the storm’s memory fades to a hush of creaking timbers and breathing children. Merelia finds the makeshift bunks tucked against the wall, all blankets, ropes, and salt-stiff cloth.

She kneels at their level and gathers the nearest into her arms. One by one, the others lean in, small hands clutching her sleeves and tail.

The ship rocks gently now, no longer fighting the sea. In the dim lantern light, Merelia’s wedding ring flashes as she smooths a child’s hair and steadies the bundle of them against her chest.

He keeps his voice low, but the relief in it is plain. The deck can wait. This matters more.

Captain Silas

We have the charter, the coast, and a name. Let the little ones breathe, first.

One child peeks past Merelia’s shoulder toward the ladder, then settles when the distant clatter above does not return. Another yawns against her side, eyelids drooping at last.

For a moment, the whole cramped cabin feels almost like a cradle. Outside, Tortulan waits in the dark sea. Inside, the family simply rests together.

A Moment of Quiet Refuge

Merelia eases the last child down, then tucks the blanket up to their chin with careful hands. The cabin grows quieter as her kits settle into their bunks, one after another.

Merelia straightens a little, checking each sleepy face in turn, then draws the blanket edge smooth over a tiny shoulder.

Stay here?

The smallest nods off before the question fully lands. Merelia’s lute rests within reach beside the bedding, untouched but near.

Bram

Bram

Aye. Tonight, this cabin is their harbor.

Captain Silas

And yours, until morning. The sea has given us one quiet hour, we should take it.

A final blanket is smoothed into place. The children sink deeper into sleep, bundled safe in the warm cradle of the ship.

Bram

If you like, I can keep watch outside the door while they dream.

I ask Bram to keep watch outside

SUCCESS (Superb Diplomacy, rolled -1)

A Moment of Quiet Refuge

Merelia rises from the bunks and gives Bram a small, steady look toward the door, making the request plain without needing more than that.

Bram

Bram

I’ll take it. No one gets past me unless I mean for them to.

Bram answers with a brief nod, then shifts his weight to the threshold, claiming the corridor with quiet loyalty.

Captain Silas

Captain Silas

A good watchman is worth three loud men. I owe you for keeping this cabin calm.

Silas lowers himself onto a crate by the wall, letting the hush settle around him instead of breaking it.

Bram

Bram

If the sea leaves us this peace, I’d rather spend it guarding children than chasing arguments.

The small cabin feels warmer for the saying of it. Bram takes his post outside the door, and the ship’s corridor beyond falls into watchful silence.
