The Coast of Tortulan Revealed

The storm loosens its fist. On the gun deck, wet boards gleam under a pale break in the clouds, and the wind turns sweet, almost floral. Ahead, the jagged coast of Tortulan rises from the sea like a promise made real.

Captain Silas braces at the helm, one arm outstretched toward the island. His face hardens as he glances at the charter in Tiverus's possession, then back to the shore. Every eye on deck follows that line of sight.

Captain Silas

Captain Silas

There it is. Tortulan. Your first mate seized that charter for a reason, and I mean to hear it.

The privateer crew eases back another pace, but their hands stay near their weapons. Tiverus holds the charter high enough for all to see, while the mutinous first mate lies sprawled and groggy where he fell, still unable to answer for himself.

Tiverus

Tiverus

He wanted this course kept secret. Now he can tell us why, if he has the spine for it when he wakes.

The charter and Tortulan are finally in the same breath.

From the island comes the shimmer of white surf against black stone, and the sweet scent deepens. Whatever the first mate hoped to hide, the path ahead now points straight toward his answer, and toward land.

I press the first mate for his reason

The Coast of Tortulan Revealed

Merelia steps closer, not with steel, but with patience. The deck is quieter now, and her question lands in the hush like a coin dropped into a cup.

Merelia

Merelia

Why?

The first mate blinks awake more fully, bloodshot eyes tracking from Merelia to the charter in Tiverus's hand. His jaw works once, then loosens, as if the fight has finally left him.

The Mutinous First Mate

Because that paper was a leash. Tortulan is not just a hiding place. It is where he meant to bind every oath on this ship to his own hand.

A few privateers exchange glances. Captain Silas goes still at the helm, listening harder now than before. Tiverus lowers the charter an inch, letting the words have room.

The Mutinous First Mate

The Mutinous First Mate

He had a broker waiting on the island, someone who could sell our route, our names, maybe worse. I took the charter before he could hand it over.

Merelia gets the shape of it at once, mutiny born from fear, not greed. The first mate swallows, then looks straight at her instead of the rest of the deck.

The Mutinous First Mate

The Mutinous First Mate

If you want the rest, you ask him. What was he buying with our passage?

I press for the broker's location

SUCCESS (Superb Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Merelia lets the silence do the work. The first mate feels it, draws a longer breath, and the fight drains from his shoulders.

Merelia

Merelia

And the broker. Where on Tortulan?

The Mutinous First Mate

The Mutinous First Mate

South shore. Black stone cove, beneath a split cliff. There is a fishers' path at low tide, if you know where to look.

The Mutinous First Mate

The Mutinous First Mate

He called himself Merek. Never gave me his true name, only a sign, a brass ring with a gull stamped on it.

Captain Silas exchanges a sharp look with Tiverus. The charter is no longer just a prize, it is a map drawn by a traitor's hand.

The Mutinous First Mate

The Mutinous First Mate

You asked cleanly. So I will answer cleanly.

The Mutinous First Mate

The Mutinous First Mate

I am called Bram. If that broker is ashore when we land, I would rather meet him with witnesses than with blades.

Obtain the brass gull ring

Search Bram for the brass gull ring.

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +0)

Merelia steps in close and turns Bram’s wrist in the light, not rough, just exact. Rainwater beads on his skin, and there it is, a brass gull ring tucked beneath the cuff seam where cloth meets pulse.

With two fingers, she works it free. The ring gives a faint scrape as it slides into her palm, warm from his hand and bright against her spotted fur.

Bram

Bram

Hah. So that is where I hid it.

He keeps still while she checks the tiny stamped gull, and then the deck seems to breathe easier around them.

Captain Silas

Captain Silas

That seal again. I know it.

Tiverus

Tiverus

Then we have a trail, not a rumor.

Ahead, Tortulan sits sharp on the horizon, black stone and pale surf. Bram watches Merelia’s hand, waiting to see whether she keeps the ring or shows it to the captains.
