The survivors disappear toward the western vents while Bottu climbs the jagged pass with Ketha, Skara, and Tessik. Each laborious step pulls at his healing wound, and the dim relics offer no strength.

Skara

Skara

This ridge is the farthest we go. Beyond it, the ice breaks into ground none of us can safely cross.

The pass narrows beneath Mount Veyr’s immense shadow. A sheer wall of blue ice rises ahead, its surface clearing as frost slides away in thin, glittering sheets.

Ketha

Ketha

Look there. Those marks are older than our hatchery, and they bear the fivefold sign from the old hymns.

Dragon-carved markers emerge beneath the frost: five colored grooves circling an empty crown. The relics answer with a weak, synchronized pulse, drawing toward a seam in the wall.

Tessik

Tessik

The path begins beyond this ridge, Bottu. We will return to the western vents before the storm closes over it.

Ketha

Ketha

We will tell the scattered families where you went. When the mountain opens, hatchery-born, remember that you do not climb toward it alone.

Skara and Tessik gather close to Ketha, preparing to turn back. Beyond them, the marked ice wall waits in silence, and the narrow pass toward Tiamat’s Maw begins at Bottu’s feet.

“*I press my palm towards the sealed entrance and feed it the five magics I’ve gathered through the relics.*”

Bottu presses his palm to the sealed ice. Ruby heat, sapphire lightning, emerald poison, onyx shadow, and pearl frost stream from the five relics into the fivefold grooves.

The carved circles ignite in sequence, then turn together beneath his hand. The ancient seal recognizes the gathered magic, and the blue ice wall splits along its hidden seam.

The entrance opens onto a descending passage cut into Mount Veyr. Cold air rises from its depths, carrying the faint scent of old stone and sealed earth.

The casting exacts its price immediately. Bottu’s healing wound pulls sharply beneath his robe, reopening enough to stain the cloth as the five relics fall dim and still.

Ketha

Ketha

The mountain has opened for you, Bottu. Whatever lies below, the old hymns were right to fear its door.

Ketha, Skara, and Tessik stand at the ridge behind him, watching the revealed descent. Wind sweeps loose frost into the threshold, but the passage remains open.

Beyond the threshold, faint colored light marks ancient steps dropping toward Tiamat’s Maw. Bottu has opened the way, though his magic offers no further answer for now.

“*Damn. Bad time for the wound to reopen. But this was it. Everything I’ve worked towards. I descend into the mountain alone to find Tiamat’s Maw.*”

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)

The Path Beneath the Mountain

Bottu crosses the threshold alone. Behind him, Ketha, Skara, and Tessik remain on the ridge as the ice seal closes, leaving only a narrow seam of daylight above.

The descent twists through ancient stone, steep enough to test every foothold. Bottu moves with careful, measured agility, one hand braced against the wall while his reopened wound stains his robe.

Bottu

Bottu

The passage is older than the mountain’s outer halls.

Colored traces from the five relics glimmer faintly in the walls, guiding him past sealed alcoves and enormous claw-carved pillars. Nothing moves in the deep silence.

At last, the stair opens into a colossal cavern beneath Mount Veyr. A circular threshold of black stone stands ahead, its five empty sockets surrounding a crown-shaped seal.

The five relics rise from Bottu’s robe without his command and settle into the sockets. Their joined light parts the seal, revealing Tiamat’s Maw: a vast sanctum buried beneath the mountain.

Bottu reaches the Maw’s inner threshold. Beyond it, a dark throne waits beneath a ceiling lost in shadow, and the final path toward the Chromatic Crown lies open before him.

“*I’ll stop to rest. I can’t have the wound getting worse when I’m so close.*”

SUCCESS (Fair Health, rolled +2)

Bottu stops beneath the cavern’s black arch and lowers himself onto a broad stone ledge. The distant throne remains silent while faint colored light fades from the opened threshold.

Bottu

Bottu

The wound is still open, but it is no longer worsening.

He loosens the stained robe around his side and settles into stillness, keeping his breathing shallow and even. Stone-cold air moves through the sanctum without disturbing him.

Time passes quietly. The sharp pull in the wound eases, and the bleeding slows beneath the gathered cloth as Bottu gives his body the rest it needs.

The five relics remain in their sockets behind him, dim but steady. Their light outlines the way back through the threshold, while the shadowed sanctum waits unchanged.

After resting, Bottu rises with measured care. His wound remains serious, yet stable enough for him to continue through Tiamat’s Maw when he chooses.

“*Don’t risk it. Dying right before the throne would be a foolish end. I’ll let my body get the rest it needs. I’ll rest here and sleep.*”

SUCCESS (Fair Health, rolled +0)

The Path Beneath the Mountain

Bottu unrolls his bedroll on the broad stone ledge and settles carefully, keeping the wounded side supported. The sanctum remains still beneath the distant throne.

Bottu

Bottu

Rest is what my body needs now.

He gathers the robe loosely around himself and lets his breathing slow. The grave wound stays quiet as rest replaces exertion, and no fresh blood marks the cloth.

Sleep comes gradually in the cold air. Bottu’s muscles release their guarded tension while the five relics remain dimly lit in their sockets behind him.

Hours pass without disturbance. The sealed sanctum offers no movement, no voice, and no threat, only the deep silence beneath Mount Veyr.

When Bottu wakes, his wound is still serious but stable, and his strength has returned enough for him to rise without worsening it. The throne waits across the shadowed chamber.

“*Slow and steady, let’s walk to the throne and examine it.*”

SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled -3)

The Path Beneath the Mountain

Bottu crosses the shadowed sanctum at a careful pace. The throne grows from the black stone floor, colossal in silhouette, its arms carved like curling dragon wings.

He circles its base and examines the ancient carvings. Dust lies undisturbed except for a narrow trail of colored residue leading from the five relic sockets toward the seat.

Bottu

Bottu

The throne was made to receive something, not someone.

At the back of the seat, Bottu finds a crown-shaped recess surrounded by six shallow channels. Five channels bear faded chromatic traces; the sixth remains dark and empty.

His careful examination reveals the throne’s purpose: it is a receiving altar for the Chromatic Crown, and the recess is designed to awaken only when the other relics guide it.

The discovery costs him time. By the time he finishes tracing the channels, the sanctum’s dim light has shifted, leaving the exact shape of the Crown’s final socket obscured in shadow.

“*I find myself stumped… but there is one who would know. I sit on the throne and close my eyes, being this close to the end I reach out to Tiamat through our shared link to contact her.*”

SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled +0)

The Path Beneath the Mountain

Bottu settles onto the colossal throne and closes his eyes. The stone receives his weight without warmth, while the five relics remain silent in their distant sockets.

He reaches through the shared link, past the sanctum’s silence and the fading traces in the throne, offering Tiamat the question he cannot answer alone.

Tiamat

Tiamat

I hear you, bearer. You sit upon the receiving throne, and its sixth channel waits for the Crown.

Her presence fills the link like a distant storm. Five vast impressions gather behind her voice, while a sixth remains hidden beneath the throne’s black stone.

Tiamat

Tiamat

Do not search the chamber for what is absent. The Crown is beneath the seat, sealed in the throne’s heart. Place your hand upon the dark center and call the five fragments together.

The contact holds long enough for certainty to settle. Beneath Bottu, the throne’s black stone reveals a faint outline of a concealed central lock, exactly where Tiamat directed him.

“*Then I’ll use my link to the relics to channel the energy needed to move this throne and reveal its hidden chamber.*”

SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled +0)

The Path Beneath the Mountain

Bottu places his palm against the throne’s dark center and reaches through the link. The five relics answer from their distant sockets, their gathered power flowing into the hidden lock.

Ruby heat, sapphire force, emerald radiance, onyx shadow, and pearl frost converge beneath his hand. The throne shudders, then rises from the floor with a grinding weight that echoes through the sanctum.

The effort pulls sharply through Bottu’s healing wound, staining his robe anew, but he keeps the channel steady. The colossal seat moves aside without breaking the ancient stone around it.

A concealed chamber opens beneath the throne. Six channels descend into a circular vault, and at its center rests a sealed crown-shaped reliquary wrapped in faint chromatic light.

Tiamat

Tiamat

There it waits, bearer. The hidden chamber has opened, and the Crown lies within your reach.

The throne settles beside the exposed chamber, leaving a clear descent. The five relics remain dim, but their light now traces an unbroken path toward the sealed reliquary.

Bottu

Bottu

The Crown is beneath the throne, exactly where she said.

“*Ask Tiamat what happens once I put on the crown with all six relics finally gathered.*”

SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled +0)

The Path Beneath the Mountain
Bottu

Bottu

Tiamat, what happens once I put on the Crown with all six relics finally gathered?

The question passes through the hidden chamber and returns as a pressure in the stone. The five dim relics brighten, while the sealed Crown answers from its reliquary.

Tiamat

Tiamat

When you place the Crown upon your head, the six fragments will unite through you. You will become the vessel that gives my scattered essence a living shape.

Tiamat

Tiamat

The Maw will open fully, my prison between realities will find purchase in your world, and I will return through the body you have offered.

The answer settles without symbol or ambiguity. The Crown will make Bottu Tiamat’s living vessel, open the Maw, and provide the connection by which her imprisoned existence can enter the world.

Tiamat

Tiamat

Your will may shape what follows, bearer, but the first transformation is certain: the Crown will not merely empower you. It will make your body the doorway for my return.

The link recedes, leaving the reliquary’s chromatic seal clear beneath the throne. Bottu now knows exactly what the gathered Crown would make of him, and what his choice would unleash.

“*I stare at the crown for several seconds. This was my decision. Nothing would change unless I clawed my way to it. Tiamat had waited thousands of years. We would be bound forever and usher in a new age of dragons. She had guided me, and I had trusted her in turn. I had settled on my answer. I would release the ancient goddess and be bound to her. May we usher in a new prosperous era. I put on the crown and let the relics flow back to me. With the final relic I go through the changes Tiamat described to get my body ready. Small golden horns and white wings with red webbing emerged from my growing body.*”

SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled -1)

The Path Beneath the Mountain

Bottu stares at the sealed Crown for several quiet seconds. Then he reaches into the reliquary, lifts it free, and settles its cold circlet upon his head.

The five relics tear free from their sockets and stream into him. Ruby, sapphire, emerald, onyx, and pearl light coil through his body as the final Crown awakens.

Magic surges beyond his control, and the wound in Bottu’s side opens under the strain. Blood darkens his robe, but the transformation does not falter.

His small frame lengthens and broadens. Golden horns push from his skull, white wings unfold from his back with red webbing between their bones, and the six powers settle into one living vessel.

The Crown fuses into the new shape of him, no longer an object he can simply remove. Beneath the mountain, the Maw responds, and an unseen prison between realities finds its purchase.

A vast presence enters the bond, not replacing Bottu’s mind, but becoming inseparable from his body and power. Tiamat’s return has begun through the vessel he chose to become.
