The Eye Opens Below

The ancient elven steps descend beneath the Verdant Wound into a dry chamber untouched by poison. Bottu remains alone; Seraphine Vale is far behind at Histol’s northern waystation.

Clean stone replaces the crater’s eaten ground. Elven records cover the walls in layered script, while branching maps trace waterways, ruins, and fissures through the Verdant Wound.

Bottu

Bottu

The poison never reached this chamber.

Above the inner doorway, a carved stone eye opens by a narrow measure. Green light spills across one map, illuminating a route toward the Emerald Eye before the lid stops.

Protective glyphs awaken around the inscriptions, brightening whenever dust shifts near the records. Their silent judgment turns the chamber into a careful boundary rather than a simple archive.

The route can be studied from the steps without entering the deeper pit. Yet beneath the chamber’s stillness, a faint disturbance suggests that whoever has watched the site may be watching now.

“It was probably best to avoid the eyes glow. Just a feeling. I’ll try and slip around it.”

Bottu lowers his body and slips along the chamber’s outer wall, keeping his orange robe close to the clean stone and avoiding the eye’s green-lit map.

Bottu

Bottu

The glyphs are watching the space around the eye.

His bare foot clears the first inscription, but the second lies beneath a thin veil of dust. As his weight shifts, the dust trembles across its carved lines.

The protective glyphs flare. The stone eye opens fully, and green light sweeps across the chamber, sealing the illuminated map beneath a translucent layer of pale stone.

The inner doorway closes with a quiet grinding sound. The route toward the Emerald Eye disappears behind the seal, while a new line of script ignites beneath the eye.

The inscription does not attack or pursue him. It now declares the archive witnessed, leaving Bottu beside the sealed map with the deeper chamber inaccessible by stealth alone.

“No good. I’ll need to blind the eye instead. A bright flash of light could do the trick. I’ll use electric magic with the Sapphire Fang to blind it.”

No good. I’ll need to blind the eye instead. A bright flash should do it.

Bottu draws the Sapphire Fang and channels electric magic through its blue-white edge. The chamber darkens around the gathering charge, while the stone eye fixes its green gaze upon him.

He releases the spell. A brilliant fork of blue lightning bursts across the eye, flooding the chamber with white radiance and striking the carved pupil without cracking the surrounding stone.

The eye goes dark and remains wide open, its green light extinguished. The protective glyphs fall silent, and the translucent seal over the map dissolves into harmless dust.

Bottu

Bottu

The eye can no longer watch me.

The inner doorway grinds open again, revealing a descending passage lined with elven markers. The illuminated map now shows the full route to the Emerald Eye, including a concealed side path that bypasses the deeper pit.

Bottu stands before the reopened archive, Sapphire Fang still crackling faintly in his claws. The blinded eye offers no further judgment, and the newly revealed side path gives him a safer route onward.

“Perfect! Now I can go deeper AND I get to take this safer alternate route.”

Bottu

Perfect. I can go deeper and take the safer alternate route.

Bottu slips through the reopened doorway and follows the concealed side path, moving lightly along the dry elven stone. The route bends away from the deeper pit without sacrificing its descent.

The passage narrows between walls etched with waterways and rootlike fissures. Green mineral light glimmers beneath the carvings, guiding Bottu farther below the poisoned crater.

Bottu

Bottu

The safer path avoids the pit but still leads toward the Emerald Eye.

He crosses a slanted section where the old floor has shifted, springing between stable stones and catching a low ledge only briefly. His shoulder stays clear of the wall.

The alternate route opens into a lower elven gallery. A sealed green-lit arch stands ahead, marked by the same eye symbol, while the passage behind Bottu remains safely open.

“Another eye. I knew its weakness now at least. I should blind this one too like the last one so I can proceed deeper.”

Another eye. I know its weakness now. I’ll blind this one too and proceed deeper.

Bottu raises the Sapphire Fang toward the sealed green-lit arch. The carved eye opens, casting a watchful beam across the lower gallery as blue charge gathers along the relic’s edge.

He releases the spell. Blue lightning flashes across the eye and floods the elven carvings with cold radiance, striking the carved pupil without harming the surrounding stone.

The eye’s green light vanishes. Its stone lid remains open and sightless while the protective markings around the arch dim into stillness.

The sealed arch grinds apart, revealing a descending passage beneath the gallery. Green mineral light continues along its walls, and the safer route remains open behind Bottu.

Bottu

Bottu

The eye is blind. The deeper route is open.

“I’ll keep moving deeper now that the path was open. The Emerald Eye had to be around here somewhere.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

The Eye Opens Below

Bottu keeps moving through the open passage, descending past green-lit carvings and dry roots preserved in the elven stone. The route remains stable beneath his bare feet.

The passage bends around a deep shaft, then opens into a circular chamber untouched by poison. Pale green light gathers beneath a low stone canopy at its center.

Within the canopy rests the Emerald Eye, a polished green relic suspended above a shallow basin. Its glow answers the Ruby Heart, Sapphire Fang, and Pearl Claw beneath Bottu’s robe.

Bottu crosses the chamber with precise, effortless steps, avoiding the basin’s marked rim. The elven inscriptions brighten around him but offer no resistance.

He reaches beneath the canopy and closes his claws around the Emerald Eye. Green radiance folds inward, settling warmly against his scales as the relic accepts his grasp.

The chamber answers with a quiet pulse. The Emerald Eye joins the other three fragments, and a map of branching routes appears across the basin, pointing beyond the Verdant Wound.

The Emerald Eye is mine, and it knows where the next path begins.
