Kynes and Bren descend through the ruined doorway, leaving Magistrate Magistrate Orlan Vey’s chambers behind. Below, the stairwell carries rain, candle smoke, and the fading chill of shadow magic.
Above them, Magistrate Orlan Vey appears on the landing, unarmed and holding a sealed parchment between two fingers. His signet presses fresh wax marked with his authority.

Magistrate Orlan Vey
Stop there. This records my withdrawal from the brass-bound vessel. No one is to interfere with Elira Thorne, her shop, or the vessel in her keeping.
He lets the parchment hang openly over the broken threshold. The guards remain gone, and no other footsteps answer from the upper rooms.

Bren
A withdrawal, love. He chose that word carefully. Let us hear whether he withdrew his claim, or merely withdrew his men.

Magistrate Orlan Vey
The document states that I relinquish custody and authorize no seizure under my name. It bears my seal, and that should settle the matter.
Bren watches the parchment rather than Magistrate Orlan Vey’s face. Beneath the formal language, one clause remains dangerously narrow: it forbids seizure under his name, but says nothing about agents acting for him.
“I pyrokinetically lite the letter on fire." Or you can not be a peice of shit and leave her be." I turn and face him " or next time I return I ingrave liar into your flesh over every inch." I say with a predatory smile”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +0)

Kynes
Or you can not be a piece of shit and leave her be.
Fire blooms from Kynes’s hand and races across the parchment. The magistrate’s seal blackens, curls, and vanishes as ash scatters over the broken landing.

Kynes
Or next time I return, I engrave liar into your flesh over every inch.
Kynes turns to face Vey with a predatory smile. The last ember gutters between them, leaving the magistrate’s withdrawal destroyed but its meaning unmistakable.

Magistrate Orlan Vey
You have made your position unmistakable. Elira, her shop, and the vessel are beyond my reach. I will not pursue them, directly or through agents.

Bren
That sounded less narrow, love. He has finally understood that leaving her alone is the price of keeping his skin intact.
Vey’s jaw tightens, but he remains unarmed and alone on the landing. Below, rain murmurs through the stairwell as the final ash drifts from his fingers.
“I return to Elira and secure the vessel”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)

Kynes and Bren leave the Gilded Eel behind, moving through rain-dark streets toward the chandlery. The magistrate’s threat fades beneath the steady hiss of the harbor.

Bren
You burned his seal, love, then made him surrender the claim aloud. Elira should have a quieter night now.
The chandlery’s rear door opens at Bren’s touch. Inside, Elira stands beside the cluttered table, one hand resting near the brass-bound vessel beneath a folded sailcloth.

Elira Thorne
You returned. Did he withdraw his men, or only promise it while we watched?
Bren gives her the account while Kynes crosses to the vessel. He lifts it from its hiding place, checks its bands and seal, then places it inside a stout salt crate.
Shadow settles through the crate’s seams as Kynes secures the lid and binds it with cord. The vessel is enclosed, warded, and safely in Elira’s keeping.

Elira Thorne
Then it stays here, sealed and untouched. Whatever power it carries, no magistrate will take it by force again.
“I call the void spirit veyr”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +0)

Kynes sets one hand against the salt crate and draws a silent circle through the air. Void gathers without flame, dimming the chandlery’s lamplight to violet.
The circle opens cleanly. Veyr steps from its depth, a void spirit with a masculine silhouette,, a tall young adult figure formed from translucent purple shadow, with a smooth faceless head and thin, drifting limbs.

Veyr
Kynes. Your summons crosses the dark with unusual clarity. What service do you require of me?
The spirit’s presence presses softly against the room, stirring the folded sails and making the brass bands around the crate answer with a faint, resonant hum.

Bren
You called Veyr without warning, love. That is either confidence or a very deliberate choice.

Elira Thorne
If it means the vessel remains safe, I will not object to another guardian, provided the spirit does not open it.

Veyr
I will not break its seal without your command. The vessel is enclosed, and its ward recognizes your keeping. Speak, Kynes.
“" instead of you working at hall of welcome, I need you here to watch the vessel, of that is fine with you”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Kynes
Instead of working at the Hall of Welcome, I need you here to watch the vessel. Is that acceptable to you?
Veyr’s translucent silhouette inclines toward the salt crate. Violet shadow brushes its bands, listening to the ward without disturbing the seal.

Veyr
It is acceptable. I will remain here and guard the vessel in your absence, without opening it or altering its ward.

Bren
A sensible assignment, love. Veyr can watch the crate while we handle whatever the Hall requires.

Elira Thorne
Then I can breathe easier. A guardian who honors the seal is welcome beneath my roof.
Veyr settles beside the crate, its purple form becoming a quiet sentinel in the dim chandlery. The brass bands’ hum softens, and the vessel remains sealed and watched.

Reach the Hall of Welcome
Kynes leaves Chandlery workroom behind and arrives at Hall of Welcome.
“We start the two week journey back to the hall of welcome”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -2)

The Hall of Welcome rises from pale riverstone beneath a clearing sky. Its broad doors stand open, and warm lamplight spills across rain-dark steps scented with wet cedar and hearth smoke.
Kynes and Bren arrive beneath the carved archway. Travelers murmur in the entry court while robed attendants carry bundles between guest chambers, kitchens, and a high-ceilinged gathering hall.

Bren
Home for a little while, love. Let us hope the Hall offers fewer magistrates and more honest beds.
A bronze bell rings once from within, though no hand touches its cord. The sound rolls through the Hall, and several attendants stop to listen.
At the far end of the entry court, a sealed inner door bears fresh violet chalk marks arranged like a map of branching paths. None match the Hall’s familiar symbols.

Bren
That was not here when we left. Someone has marked an entrance, or a warning, and they expected the Hall to recognize it.
The chalk lines brighten as Kynes crosses the threshold. Beneath them, a quiet pulse answers from somewhere below the Hall, steady as a distant heartbeat.
