Evening settles beneath the river-facing roof, turning the new windows amber. Kynes and Bren prepare their first meal together as the house fills with the scent of herbs, bread, and simmering vegetables.

Footsteps approach along the concealed guest path. Mara emerges between the ferns in a travel cloak, her white hair wind-tossed, carrying a small bundle and looking tired but composed.

Mara

Mara

I found the path exactly as promised. Phandelver is peaceful, the Hall is quiet, and no crisis followed me here. That seemed worth reporting in person.

Mara lowers her bundle beside the doorway and glances through the unfinished warmth of the kitchen. The river murmurs below, while the last daylight fades beyond the trees.

Mara

Mara

I also brought dried apples and a letter from the baker. She says the town misses your company, though she is pleased the Hall has not become an excuse to summon you back.

Mara

Mara

If there is room, I would stay for supper. I would like to see what you built, and perhaps spend one evening somewhere no one needs me to solve anything.

She waits just inside the threshold, leaving the choice of welcome to them. Behind her, the hidden path disappears into dusk, and the new home holds its first unexpected guest.

Come in, lass. As much as I torment you, you know you are always welcome. I care for you like family.

Mara’s composed expression loosens, and she steps fully across the threshold. Bren shifts aside to make room, her quiet smile welcoming the choice without ceremony.

Mara

Mara

I know, Kynes. You make the torment obvious enough that no one could mistake the care beneath it.

She retrieves her bundle and carries it toward the kitchen, the weariness in her shoulders easing as the river sounds fill the pause around them.

Mara

Mara

Family, then. Freely chosen, and without obligations attached. I can accept that, especially with supper waiting.

Bren sets another bowl beside the simmering pot. Mara places her dried apples on the table, and the unfinished home receives her as though it had been expecting one more chair.

Quest Complete

Welcome Mara as a guest for supper

“" are you good, you seem tense and exhausted at the same time" noticing her weariness. " Still recovering from you defeating Veyra ashehand?" I asking knowing it took its toll on her more than physically”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

Kynes

Kynes

Are you good? You seem tense and exhausted at the same time. Still recovering from defeating Veyra Ashehand? I know it took more from you than the physical cost.

Mara pauses with one hand on the back of the chair. The question reaches past her practiced composure, and she lowers herself slowly beside the table.

Mara

Mara

I am recovering. Not from wounds, exactly. Veyra Ashehand forced me to spend strength I had been saving for a life beyond survival.

Mara

Mara

Defeating her proved I could stand against what bound me, but it also left me listening for commands that are no longer there. Exhaustion is easier to name than that silence.

She accepts the bowl Bren placed for her but does not eat yet. Her shoulders ease as she speaks, the tension becoming something acknowledged rather than concealed.

Mara

Mara

So yes, Kynes. I am tired, and I am still learning what remains when victory does not tell me who to become. Thank you for noticing without trying to decide it for me.

Outside, the river keeps its steady course. Inside, Mara finally lifts the spoon, present at the table and willing to let the evening continue without pretending she is untouched.

“I share supper and let Mara set the pace, I offer Mara a quiet room without questions.”

Kynes shares the supper without pressing Mara for more. Bren keeps the meal warm and lets the pauses remain comfortable, while Mara decides when each silence ends.

Kynes

Kynes

There is a quiet room ready for you. You can use it tonight, or stay as long as you need. No questions unless you choose to answer them.

Mara

Mara

Then I will accept the room, and the absence of questions. That is kinder than most welcomes I have received.

Mara eats at her own pace, gradually finishing the bowl. When she is ready, Bren shows her the small guest room overlooking the trees, leaving the door unlatched and the choice entirely hers.

Mara

Mara

I will stay several days, if that remains welcome. I can help with the garden, the paths, or anything else that needs doing. Quietly, and without making myself a responsibility.

The offer gives the household a willing pair of hands and a trusted presence, without turning Mara’s recovery into a duty. She sets her bundle inside, then returns to the table for tea.

Bren

Bren

You are welcome here, Mara. Rest first. If you choose to help later, we will let the house tell us what it needs.

“As I help Bren tidy up I ask Mara, " what's in the letter?"”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Kynes helps Bren gather bowls and fold the cloth while Mara returns from the guest room with the letter in hand. The kitchen settles into an easy evening rhythm.

Kynes

Kynes

What's in the letter?

Mara turns the folded page between her fingers, then sets it beside her tea. Her tiredness remains, but the question draws out a small, genuine smile.

Mara

Mara

It is from the baker. She says Phandelver is peaceful, the Hall remains quiet, and everyone is glad I am finding reasons to leave my duties behind. She included a request that I visit when I can, because apparently her shelves have become too orderly without me.

Bren places the clean bowls away and glances toward the letter without intruding. Mara smooths its crease, keeping the page open rather than hiding what it says.

Mara

Mara

There is no emergency in it, Kynes. Just an invitation, and proof that ordinary people can miss me for ordinary reasons. I think I would like to answer tomorrow.

She folds the letter carefully and returns it to her bundle. The choice seems to lighten her, while the house accepts another small connection to the life she is making for herself.

“I give her a smile and give a space at a writing table, then go to my workshop and start moving items from my pocket dimension to sort that out. And put soul cutter in a place on a sword rack .”

Kynes smiles at Mara and clears a generous space at the writing table. She settles there with her letter and tea, accepting the gesture without interrupting his work.

He crosses into the workshop and opens the pocket dimension, reaching for the stored tools and materials. The interior answers with a shifting maze of dim compartments instead of ordered shelves.

Kynes tries to impose a clear sequence, but the compartments slide apart under his spell. Several harmless objects appear briefly, then withdraw beyond his reach as the opening contracts.

The sorting attempt falls short. The pocket dimension seals itself behind a dull shimmer, leaving the workshop only partly arranged and preventing another immediate retrieval.

He turns to the sword rack and searches the available weapons for Soul Cutter. Its place is empty, and the absent blade cannot be taken from the sealed space or set among the others.

Mara

Mara

The house can wait for perfect order. If the sword is not here, we will not pretend it is. Come back to the table when you are ready.

From the writing table, Mara leaves the page open and the spare chair untouched beside her. The workshop remains usable, but the sword rack now makes the missing place unmistakable.

“I give her a smile and give a space at a writing table, then go to my workshop and start moving items from my pocket dimension to sort that out. And put soul cutter in a place on a sword rack .”

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +0)

Kynes smiles at Mara and clears the writing table for her letter and tea. She settles into the spare chair while he crosses into the workshop, leaving the household quiet around her.

He opens the pocket dimension and reaches through its shifting compartments. This time, his spell finds the stored tools and materials, drawing them out in orderly bundles across the workbench.

The retrieval exacts a magical price. Violet sparks crawl across the workshop walls, briefly draining the warmth from the room before settling into harmless glassy flecks on the floor.

Kynes then follows the remaining arcane thread deeper into the pocket dimension and retrieves Soul Cutter from its concealed compartment. The blade emerges intact, its dark edge silent beneath the lamplight.

He places Soul Cutter in the empty space on the sword rack, then sorts the recovered implements by craft, purpose, and frequency of use. The workshop becomes functional rather than merely crowded.

Mara

Mara

That sounded more dramatic than arranging shelves ought to be. Still, I see the sword has found its place.

From the writing table, Mara glances toward the workshop doorway, then returns to her letter. The faint violet flecks remain on the floor, marking the cost of the successful retrieval.

“" well I'm trying to keep magic here to s minimum. The work space is purely for theoretical spell work." I smile. " I don't just wave my hands and pull a spell idea out of the blue." I smirk”

Kynes

I’m trying to keep magic here to a minimum. This workspace is purely for theoretical spellwork. I don’t just wave my hands and pull a spell idea out of the blue.

Kynes smiles and gestures toward the ordered tools, diagrams, and recovered implements. Nothing in the workshop is active; it is a place for examining principles, testing notation, and thinking before any casting occurs.

Mara

Mara

I believe you. Theory is still work, especially when the point is understanding what a spell would do before you ever give it power.

Mara rises from the writing table and studies the shelves without touching them. Her attention settles on the blank spaces between Kynes’s diagrams, where assumptions have been deliberately left visible.

Mara

Mara

I can help you keep the work theoretical. I know which questions reveal a spell’s structure without requiring it to be cast, and I can mark those methods for you.

She takes a clean sheet and begins a compact set of headings for components, limits, and possible outcomes, giving the workspace a safer study method and a clear advantage for future spell design.

“" once your finished with your letter that's fine, I was going to help Bren." I then join Bren inspecting the guest path.”

Once you’re finished with your letter, that’s fine. I was going to help Bren.

Mara

Mara

Then go. I have the headings started, and I can finish them without stealing the evening from either of you.

Kynes leaves the workshop and joins Bren beneath the trees. Together they follow the concealed guest path as dusk gathers between the ferns.

Bren

Bren

I checked the footing earlier, but a second pair of eyes may notice what mine accepted too quickly, love.

Kynes examines the route with practiced attention. He finds the driest approach, a natural screen of hazel, and a clear sightline toward the foundation without exposing the path to the road.

Bren

Bren

Good. Guests can reach us without crossing the supply way, and we can see them before they reach the house. That is privacy, not suspicion.

At the path’s end, Kynes identifies a flat stone suitable for a discreet stepping place and a low branch that should be trimmed for clear passage. Bren marks both choices, pleased with the practical answer.
