The road toward Warlock's Crypt climbs through wet grass and thornbush to an overgrown burial mound. Pale grave-fire rings a stranded caravan, its wagons and horses motionless beyond the cold flames.
Beside the mound stands Larloch the Shadow King, an ancient lich in layered black vestments, his skull crowned with tarnished iron and green witchlight burning in empty sockets.
A villager in mud-stained clothes, a young adult woman with a slight build, wind-tangled brown hair, and a pale green scarf kneels before him, shoulders trembling. Their ordinary shadow stretches across the grass, then jerks sideways while their body remains still.

Larloch the Shadow King
Dark elf, you arrive at a useful hour. Grant this caravan safe passage, and the dead will not claim its travelers.
Stone grinds beneath the kneeling figure. A seam circles the mound, widening as buried darkness exhales through the soil and pale fire bends toward the opening.

Larloch the Shadow King
Do not mistake my offer for surrender. The missing villager remains here. I will not give them to you, nor explain what wears their shadow.
Behind the flames, a wagon driver, a middle-aged man with a broad build, weathered brown skin, a close-cropped beard, and a soot-dark coat shouts for help while the horses strain against their traces. The mound sinks another handspan, awaiting Kynes's response.

Rescue the missing villager
“"Dark elf," I give a perplexed look. " After all I've done. I'm the fuck mothering wizard of Phandalin, Kynes, and I will be addressed as such dark Lord." I say plainly”
SUCCESS (Legendary Intimidation, rolled +0)

Kynes
After all I have done, I am the fucking wizard of Phandalin, Kynes. Address me as such, dark lord.
Kynes's words cut across the burial mound with measured force. The pale grave-fire bows inward, and the buried darkness stills beneath the stones.

Larloch the Shadow King
Very well, Wizard of Phandalin. Your title is heard, and I will address you by it.
The lich inclines his crowned skull. Green witchlight sharpens in his empty sockets, while the seam around the mound stops widening.

Kneeling Villager
Wizard of Phandalin! Please, do not let him take us beneath the earth.
The kneeling villager raises her face, hope breaking through the terror in her eyes. Behind her, the caravan's horses quiet as the cold flames settle.

Larloch the Shadow King
Now, Wizard of Phandalin, decide whether your authority is meant to command or merely to be proclaimed.
“"So what did they do to piss you off to crawl out of warlocks crypt eh" I ask”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

Kynes
So what did they do to piss you off, crawling out of Warlock's Crypt, eh?
The question strips the ritual grandeur from the mound. Even the grave-fire lowers, as though the buried dark itself waits for the lich's answer.

Larloch the Shadow King
They opened a sealed barrow beneath my crypt and carried away a black iron reliquary. They did not know what they stole.
The driver goes pale behind the wagon rail. The kneeling villager turns toward him, her scarf snapping in the cold wind as his silence becomes an accusation.

Larloch the Shadow King
The reliquary contains a name that must remain forgotten. Its opening woke the dead beneath this road, and the caravan carried the thief away.

Kneeling Villager
We found no barrow. The driver bought that iron box from a peddler at dusk. He swore it was only an old lockbox.

Larloch the Shadow King
Then your authority has found its first useful truth, Wizard of Phandalin. The thief stands among these travelers, whether knowingly or not.
“I holler over to the wagon driver " hey, front and center mate." I demand”
SUCCESS (Legendary Intimidation, rolled +1)

Kynes
Hey, front and center, mate.
The demand carries across the caravan with unnatural weight. Wagon Driver releases the wagon rail and steps into the pale grave-fire, boots sinking slightly in the wet grass.

Wagon Driver
Yes, Wizard of Phandalin. I am here.
He stops several paces from Kynes, hands raised and empty. His weathered face glistens with sweat despite the cold, and his eyes keep darting toward the sealed mound.

Larloch the Shadow King
There is your thief, or the closest thing this frightened company possesses to one. Ask him where the reliquary went.

Wagon Driver
I told you, I bought it from a peddler. A hooded fellow by the crossroads. He vanished before moonrise, and I saw no barrow.

Kneeling Villager
You hid it beneath the driver's seat. You said no one would search there.
“"mate, I'll give you till the count of ten to get his lock box eh." I start " and if you don't , a pissed liche Lord will be the lest of your issues. Savvy?" I tell the driver”
SUCCESS (Legendary Intimidation, rolled +0)

Kynes
Mate, I'll give you till the count of ten to get his lockbox. And if you don't, a pissed lich lord will be the least of your issues. Savvy?
The driver's face drains of color. Kynes's threat settles over the caravan, heavier than the cold, while the grave-fire gutters toward the mound.

Wagon Driver
Aye. Savvy, Wizard of Phandalin.
He spins toward the wagon and drops to one knee. Before any count can finish, he reaches beneath the driver's seat and drags out a black iron lockbox crusted with mud.

Kneeling Villager
That is it. That is the box he bought.

Larloch the Shadow King
Efficiently commanded, Wizard of Phandalin. The reliquary is now in your possession, though its forgotten name remains sealed within.
The driver sets the box on the wet grass between them and backs away, palms raised. A dull pulse answers from inside, and the mound's buried darkness stirs once beneath the stones.

“" is that your box liche Lord?, if so release the caravan" I tell the lorloch”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -2)

Kynes
Is that your box, Lich Lord? If it is, release the caravan.

Larloch the Shadow King
It is mine, Wizard of Phandalin. Your demand is granted, but remember that you purchased these lives with my favor.
Larloch extends one skeletal hand. The lockbox rises from the grass and drifts to him as the grave-fire withdraws from the wagons, leaving only damp smoke.

Larloch the Shadow King
Travelers, take your beasts and go. Speak of this bargain plainly: the Wizard of Phandalin commands with borrowed authority, and I allowed it.
The horses surge forward, dragging the wagons clear of the mound. The driver bows repeatedly while the villager scrambles aboard, her pale green scarf streaming behind her.

Wagon Driver
Thank you, Wizard. I will tell every road and tavern what you did here.

Larloch the Shadow King
Your reputation now carries my mark as well. When I call upon the favor you have made, Wizard, you will answer.
