Several hours after leaving Aurelia, night settles over the forest. Coco finds a secluded hollow and guides Sable into brush, keeping horse and rider concealed beneath the trees.
Firelight flickers ahead between dark trunks. Vael’s horned-helm mark glows faintly beneath Coco’s sleeve, while Sable stands motionless, her breath quiet against the cool air.
Through the branches, armed slavers surround a covered wagon. A frightened beastwoman is bound to a timber post, her ears pinned back as one man checks the ropes.

Rusk
Keep her secured until dawn. Buyers from the Beastfolk Territories will pay more for a rare captive like this.

the second slaver
Then stop staring and cover the wagon. If she reaches the road, we lose our bargain and our skin.
The beastwoman lifts her head. Her eyes find Coco through the branches, widening with sudden recognition or desperate hope, though she makes no sound.
A twig shifts beneath Sable’s hidden hoof. One slaver turns sharply toward the brush, hand dropping to his weapon as the fire snaps behind him.

“I step out into the light confendently "oh look at this dumb and dumber you know its a bad idea to hold camp fires at night? you can be seen very easly I assume that best woman insent prat of the crew huh?" I mock the slavers”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Coco steps from the brush into the firelight, Sable remaining concealed behind the trees. The slavers freeze as every face turns toward him.

Coco
Oh, look at this, Dumb and Dumber. You know it is a bad idea to keep a campfire burning at night, right? You can be seen easily. I assume the beastwoman is not part of your crew?

Rusk
You have a death wish, traveler. Walk away before you become another item in the wagon.
The first slaver draws his sword, but his confidence falters beneath Coco’s steady gaze. Two others shift uneasily, glancing toward the dark road.

the beastwoman
He is not with them. Please, stranger, do not leave me here.

the second slaver
Circle him. Take his horse, bind him, and keep the captive quiet. We are not losing this bargain tonight.
The slavers spread around the fire, weapons ready, while the covered wagon creaks behind them. The beastwoman watches Coco with guarded hope as the flames expose every hostile face.
“"come on I just wanna have a little fun" *I laugh as I clinch my fist in my right hand and point it at slaver to and shoot out a green blast of magic that burns his shulder and pushes him to the ground* "yall well be good magic pratice I think" *I pull my sword out ready to face slaver 1* "tell me whats your name before I end you"”
SUCCESS (Superb Arcana, rolled -2)

Coco
Come on, I just want to have a little fun.
Coco laughs, clenches his right fist, and thrusts it toward the second slaver. Green magic erupts across the clearing, striking his shoulder and hurling him hard against the wagon.
The blast succeeds, but its recoil burns through Coco’s glove, leaving his knuckles reddened and stinging. The flash and thunder announce him to anything listening in the forest.

Coco
Y'all will be good magic practice, I think.
Coco draws his sword and faces the first slaver. Behind him, the injured man groans on the ground, clutching his scorched shoulder while the others hesitate.

Coco
Tell me your name before I end you.

Rusk
Rusk. My name is Rusk, and you just made the worst mistake of your life.
“"Nice to know" *I dash forward to cut his left hand off*”
SUCCESS (Good Melee Combat, rolled -1)

Coco
Nice to know.
Coco dashes across the firelit clearing. His sword arcs low and clean, severing Rusk’s left hand before the slaver can raise his weapon.
Rusk’s sword crashes into the dirt beside the fire. Blood darkens his sleeve as he drops to his knees, screaming, while the other slavers recoil from Coco.

Rusk
My hand! You butchered my hand!
The strike’s force jars Coco’s wrist, splitting the reddened skin across his already burned knuckles. His sword remains steady, but pain pulses sharply through his arm.

the beastwoman
They will run now. Please, do not let them reach the horses.

the second slaver
Back away! He is a spellblade. Leave Rusk and move!
“"NO YO DONT YOU SHIT STAIN" *I shoot a green blast of entergy hitting the runing slaver in the right leg blasing it off*”
SUCCESS (Superb Arcana, rolled +0)

Coco
No, you don't, you shit stain!
Coco thrusts his burned hand toward the fleeing slaver. Green energy tears across the clearing and detonates against his right leg, blasting it away beneath the knee.

the second slaver
Aaargh! My leg! What did you do to me?
The second slaver crashes into the dirt, his weapon spinning beyond reach. The severed stump smokes faintly as the force throws him onto his back beside the wagon.

the beastwoman
He cannot run now. Please, the others will kill me if they reach the horses.
The remaining slavers stop cold. One stares at Rusk kneeling in the firelight, while another lowers his blade and measures the dark forest around them.

Vael
The fleeing threat is ended, Coco. The others are afraid, but fear may make them reckless.
“"Vael I summon you take out the rest"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Coco
Vael, I summon you. Take out the rest.
The horned-helm mark flares beneath Coco’s sleeve. Green light spills across the clearing, gathering beside the fire until Vael’s towering form steps from the glow.

Vael
As you command, Coco. They will live, but they will not threaten anyone tonight.
Vael crosses the clearing with impossible speed. One slaver’s blade is knocked aside, another is swept from his feet, and both crash into the dirt beneath spectral bindings.
The remaining slavers freeze, then drop their weapons as Vael’s green chains tighten around their wrists and ankles. Rusk stares from his knees, clutching his ruined arm.

the beastwoman
They are down. Thank the spirits. Please, stranger, the ropes are cutting into me.
Vael’s bindings hold every slaver immobile while the fire settles. The beastwoman remains tied to the post, but the clearing is now under Coco’s control.
“"I got you" *I cut the beast woman down as I search the wagon for any goods to take then I question Rusk where he is coming from and where he got the girl. then I order vael to nock them out and and pile them on the road to be discoverd to be taken to jail in the moring keep in mind this may lead to Rusk appearing again in the story for revenge*”
FAILURE (Good Melee Combat, rolled -3)

Coco
I got you.
Coco cuts through the beastwoman’s ropes. She stumbles free, rubbing her wrists, while he searches the wagon and finds shackles, travel provisions, stamped trade papers, and a locked iron chest.

the beastwoman
My name is Nara. They took me near the eastern road. The chest belongs to their buyers, but I do not know what is inside.
Coco questions Rusk about his origin and the captive’s abduction. Rusk spits blood into the dirt, offering only a crooked smile and a lie about finding Nara abandoned.

Rusk
You think chains make you clever? I came from the border camps. The girl was merchandise, and you have no idea who paid for her.

Coco
Vael, knock them out and pile them on the road. Let the morning patrol take them to jail.
Vael silences the other slavers and drags them toward the road, but stops before Rusk. His injuries are too severe; striking him unconscious could kill him. Rusk remains awake, glaring after Coco, memorizing his face.

“I cut the ropes, releasing the girl. "Vael, kill the slavers. Heal Rusk's leg, then leave him to be captured. I'm sure the guards will want to get information out of him." I then search the wagon for goods. *I take the loot from the wagon and put it in my bags*”
SUCCESS (Good Strength, rolled +1)

Coco
Vael, kill the slavers. Heal Rusk’s leg, then leave him for the guards. They will want information from him.
Vael’s spectral bindings tighten. His hand passes over the fallen slaver’s ruined leg, green light sealing the wound and restoring enough strength for Rusk to survive. Then Vael turns toward the others.

Vael
The command is understood.
The clearing erupts into swift, terrible motion. Vael strikes the bound slavers down, leaving them lifeless beside the road, while Rusk remains conscious, healed, and unable to stand.

Rusk
You think the guards will make me talk? The buyers will find you before dawn.
Coco searches the wagon thoroughly and gathers its accessible goods: travel provisions, sealed waterskins, blankets, rope, a compass, stamped trade papers, and several purses of coin. He places everything useful into his bags.

Nara
Those papers may show where they meant to take me. If the guards read them, perhaps the other captives can be found too.

Coco
You're right, Nara. I will leave the papers here. Or we save them ourselves. I doubt the guards will do anything. Rusk, who are the buyers?
Coco holds the stamped papers beneath the firelight while Vael keeps Rusk pinned against the roadside. Nara watches closely, one hand guarding her bruised wrists.

Rusk
The buyers call themselves the Gilded Maw. Beastfolk brokers from the eastern territories. They collect rare bloodlines, unusual magic, anything nobles might pay to own.

Rusk
Their meeting place is Blackreed Crossing, three days east through the lowlands. A horned foxwoman named Sella handles the contracts. She has bought from us before.

Coco
How many captives are waiting there, and when is the exchange?

Rusk
Six, perhaps seven. The exchange is tomorrow night, at the old ferry house. Miss it, and Sella moves them before dawn.

Nara
Then the papers can lead us there. If the guards ignore this, we cannot wait for their permission. Those captives may have no one else coming.
