Thava slips through the break in the wall into a forgotten maintenance tunnel. The market noise fades behind him, replaced by dripping stone, damp earth, and the rank bite of old oil.
The passage is narrow enough to brush his shoulders, with iron clamps jutting from the walls and a slick run of moss underfoot. Ahead, Vane’s shape flickers in the weak light, already moving deeper.

Thava Tymont
The tunnel bends left, then drops.
Thava keeps low and follows, Garrick’s gun steady in his grip. Dust sifts from the ceiling as something shifts farther ahead, and the old stones answer with a thin, uneasy groan.

Vane
You should have stayed in the market.
Vane does not stop. He throws one glance back over his shoulder, then vanishes around the bend, forcing Thava to choose between pursuit and the growing sense that this tunnel was built for hiding things.

Garrick's gun
“Stealthily follow Vane”
SUCCESS (Legendary Stealth, rolled -2)

Thava moves after Vane without haste, placing each foot on bare stone instead of moss. The tunnel swallows the sound of his pursuit.
At the bend, he lowers Garrick's gun beneath the edge of the wall and watches Vane cross a cramped junction ahead.
But Thava's heel catches a loose iron clamp. It scrapes once against the stone, a small sound that travels much farther than it should.

Vane
Careful. These passages remember every footstep.
Vane does not turn fully. He slips through a low arch and leaves the way open, but his pace changes, measured now, listening for pursuit.
Thava reaches the junction unseen and confirms the tunnel runs beyond the market. Ahead, Vane pauses beside two descending passages, one breathing cold air, the other carrying the stink of old oil.

Vane
Choose quickly, Thava. One path leaves the city. The other leaves a witness.

“Shout to Vane to stay where he is. Aim the gun at him”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

Thava Tymont
Vane, stay where you are.
Thava raises Garrick's gun and sights along its barrel, fixing Vane beneath the low arch.
The command strikes harder than the weapon. Vane halts with one boot on each fork, the cold passage at his back and the oil-stained descent beside him.

Vane
There it is. The voice of the survivor at last.
Vane slowly lifts both hands away from the passage mouths. He does not turn his back, but the immediate escape is surrendered.

Vane
You have your aim, Thava. Now decide whether you want answers, or merely want me afraid.
Behind Vane, the cold passage exhales a draft carrying the faint scent of rain. Beneath it, the other tunnel gives a soft metallic groan.
“"I want answers. Why did you sell out our company?"”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

Thava Tymont
I want answers. Why did you sell out our company?
The question crosses the tunnel without a tremor. Thava keeps Garrick's gun trained, but lowers its muzzle a fraction, demanding truth rather than a corpse.

Vane
Because the company was already marked for death. The High Inquisitor knew what we found beneath the city, and he offered me a choice: betray the unit, or watch every one of us disappear.

Vane
He remembers the map, the sleeping veins, and the order stamped with a seal no soldier could refuse.

Vane
I gave him your route. I told myself the ambush would frighten you into surrender. Garrick changed the order. He made certain there would be no witnesses.
The confession settles between the stone walls. Thava has the answer, but the strain of holding his injured arm rigid sends a sharp pain through his shoulder, and the gun dips before he steadies it again.

Vane
Now you know. Does that make me the traitor, or only the coward who survived? You can lower the gun, Thava. I will keep talking.
“Lower my gun but stand ready for any sharp movements. Allow him to keep talking”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

Thava lowers Garrick's gun until its barrel points at the worn stones. He keeps both hands firm, shoulders squared, ready for any sudden movement.
The effort costs him a sharp pull through his injured shoulder. His grip tightens, and the pain leaves a tremor in the gun's metal.

Vane
You still hold yourself like a soldier. Even now, you make room for an order before you make room for mercy.

Vane
He lowered it for the truth, not because he trusts me. That distinction may be the only reason I am still breathing.

Vane
I remember the night before the ambush. You checked every strap, every watch, every route. You asked why our orders came sealed.

Vane
I should have stood beside you then. Instead, I carried the seal to Garrick and called it duty. I have been carrying that weight longer than any weapon.
Vane slowly lowers his raised hands, stopping with his palms visible at chest height. The cold passage breathes behind him, while the oil-stained branch waits in silence.

Vane
Ask me what you really came for, Thava. I will not spend another answer pretending it can undo what I did.
“Ask him the real question”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +2)

Thava Tymont
Who gave Garrick the order? Who decided my unit had to die?
The question settles into the junction. Thava's lowered gun remains steady despite the tremor in his injured shoulder.

Vane
The High Inquisitor gave the order. Garrick carried it out, but the decision came from above him.

Vane
I told myself the threat left me no choice. The truth is simpler. I chose my life over theirs.

Vane
The sealed route was marked for erasure. Your unit found the sleeping veins, and the Inquisitor feared what you would uncover.
Vane steps aside from the fork, leaving both descending paths visible between them. His open hands fall slowly to his sides.

Vane
That is the answer I should have given you before. If you want the proof, it is not in this tunnel. It is where Garrick kept the names.
“You are coming with me and getting those names. Until then, you are my prisoner. Consider that your atonement”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -2)

Thava Tymont
You are coming with me. You will lead me to those names. Until then, you are my prisoner. Consider that your atonement.
The words hold in the narrow junction. Thava Tymont raises Garrick's gun just enough to make the command unmistakable, forcing Vane away from both escape routes.

Vane
Prisoner, then. I will take you to Garrick's records. But do not mistake surrender for trust.
Vane turns toward the oil-stained descent and lifts his empty hands above his shoulders. Thava Tymont follows at gunpoint, keeping the traitor between him and the darkness.
The cost arrives in a sharp pull through Thava Tymont's injured shoulder. His grip falters, and Garrick's gun knocks against the stone, sending a hard metallic crack through the tunnel.

Vane
That noise will carry. Stay close, captor, or the tunnel will decide which of us reaches the records first.
“Follow vane to the records”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +1)

Thava Tymont keeps the gun trained as Vane leads him down the oil-stained descent. The passage twists beneath the market, its walls narrowing around them.
The metallic groan fades behind them. Ahead, Vane slips through a low arch where old shelving has been built into the stone.

Vane
Here. Garrick used this place when he needed names to disappear.
Vane lowers himself beside a recessed iron chest and points with two fingers. Dust lies thick around it, but the lock bears Garrick's worn three-pronged mark.
Under Thava Tymont's aim, Vane opens the chest with a hidden key from his sleeve. Inside, bound ledgers and wax-sealed lists reveal the names of the betrayed unit, including Thava's.

Vane
That is the record. The order, the route, and every name Garrick sold to the Inquisitor are there.
A faint bell begins tolling somewhere beyond the tunnel, followed by the scrape of stone above. Vane looks toward a second passage branching behind the shelves.

Vane
Take the ledger, but choose quickly. Someone has found the entrance.
