Thava and Kael slam against the reinforced blast door, but the metal remains cold and immovable. With a groan of tortured steel, the tertiary corridor groans, and a secondary tremor tears the floor apart. Thava stares up at a maintenance grate dislodged by the quake, revealing a shimmering, vertical light source beyond.

Thava Tymont
If we stay here, we'll be buried in this iron coffin. We have to climb.

Kael
This structure is falling to pieces, Thava. If that light leads to the surface, I am not waiting to find out if it's a trap.
Thava lunges for the exposed piping near the ceiling, his scaled fingers finding purchase in the jagged metal. Below him, Kael scrambles to follow, his boots slipping on the slick, oil-coated floor as the ceiling panels begin to rain down upon them. They ascend into the narrow, vertical shaft, leaving the collapsing corridor behind them as a new path opens up towards the cold, open air of the city's underbelly.

“Get a sense of my new surroundings”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled -1)

Thava Tymont
The air here tastes of ozone and damp moss. The structural integrity is failing faster than I anticipated. This isn't just a maintenance shaft. It is a drain pipe from the upper canals, choked with refuse and discarded gear.
Thava crests the rim of the shaft, his claws digging deep into the slick, algae-covered stone. He pulls himself onto a rusted catwalk that overhangs a massive, churning drainage basin. Above, the sky is a bruised violet, obscured by the heavy architecture of the upper city, but the distant sound of carriage wheels confirms his proximity to the surface. He pauses, breath hitching, as he spots a trio of armored guards patrolling the bridge across the basin.

Kael
We are not out yet, Thava. If we cross that bridge, they will see us before we even reach the street level.
— He is right. The guards are vigilant, and my armor is far too loud for a stealthy crossing. I need a distraction.

Get past the guards on the bridge
“Throw something loud in the water and sneak past the guards”
SUCCESS (Great Stealth, rolled +3)
Thava leans low, his tail coiled tightly against the slick iron of the catwalk. He spots a heavy, rusted gear lodged in a pile of refuse near his feet. With a flick of his wrist, he launches the scrap toward the far corner of the drainage basin.
It strikes a hollow metal pipe with a thunderous, echoing clang that rings through the damp air. The guards spin around, their torches flaring toward the sound, swords drawn in confusion as they abandon the bridge. Thava doesn't hesitate. He slips through the shadows behind them, his movements silent as a ghost, vanishing into the dim alleyway that leads to the surface.

Thava Tymont
Distraction is a simple blade, but it is enough to cut through their order. The surface is just ahead, and my target is likely already moving through the crowded markets. I have to find a vantage point before they realize they were tricked.

Find a vantage point in the market

“Climb on something tall and scan for your target”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +0)

Thava scales the jagged face of a crumbling warehouse wall, his talons finding purchase in the fissures of the masonry. He pulls himself onto the soot-stained rafters, the city market stretching out below like an anthill of movement.

Thava Tymont
Higher. The vantage point is perfect. I see the main square, and there, by the spice stalls. A cloak of midnight blue in a crowd of grays. The traitor.
His red eyes lock onto the mercenary leader weaving through the throng. Kael emerges from the shadows below, squinting up at the rafters, his hand resting on his blade hilt as he scans the perimeter for the enemy.

Kael
Thava, do you see him? If we wait too long, he will vanish into the upper city gates.

Thava Tymont
Kael is impatient. One wrong move and we lose the trail, but the drop is too far to strike with anything but a lethal intent. Should I risk an exposed descent, or track him from the rooftops until he enters the secluded alley?

Track the mercenary leader through the market
“Track the mercenary leader”
SUCCESS (Superb Stealth, rolled -1)

Thava moves along the rafters in a crouch, each careful step matching the market below. The leader in midnight blue slips between baskets and awnings, never quite still, never quite visible twice in the same place.
A donkey cart rolls through the lane and blocks the view. When it passes, the cloak is gone from the square, replaced by a narrow service arch between two spice stalls.

Thava Tymont
He heads for the back way.
Thava drops from the rafter to a slanted awning, then to a stack of empty crates. The wood groans, but holds. He lands in the shadow of the stalls without drawing a cry.
Kael appears at the mouth of the lane, looking up from below with a sharp, urgent glance. The crowd presses past him, oblivious.

Kael
There, by the arch. I lose him if he reaches the inner market.
Thava threads through hanging peppers and wicker screens, following the trail of the cloak into the service arch. Dust swirls around his boots, and the market noise dims to a tense hush in the narrow passage.
At the far end of the arch, the mercenary leader pauses under a cracked stone lintel and turns his head, as if he feels eyes on him.
“Avoid detection”
SUCCESS (Superb Stealth, rolled +3)

Thava lets the market noise swallow him. He slips through the service arch with his shoulders turned narrow, scales and dented armor hidden in the seam of shadow and spice.
On the other side, he catches the leader's path in broken fragments, a blue hem at a stall edge, a gloved hand brushing a hanging braid of onions, a quick step into the crush.

Thava Tymont
He uses the crowd like a wall.
Thava angles after him without breaking stride. The gap never opens, never closes, it simply vanishes as he mirrors the same turns and pauses, vanishes into the same stream of bodies.

Kael
You got him?
Thava gives Kael only a small, quick sign and keeps moving. Ahead, the mercenary leader stops beside a lantern seller, head still cocked, as if he has noticed too much silence behind him.
A dropped bundle bursts at Thava's feet, spilling saffron and cracked beads across the stones. He steps through it cleanly, and in the same motion spots a brass market token clamped between two boards by the stall post, marked with the sign of the inner market gate.
“Do I know the mercenary leaders name?”
YES (VeryLikely, rolled 41)

Thava Tymont
Vane. That is the name he used when he sold us out.
The memory of the betrayal surfaces with the clarity of a blade, the name Vane echoing in Thava's mind as he watches the mercenary leader adjust his cloak.
“Continue following until he is alone”
SUCCESS (Superb Stealth, rolled +0)

Thava slips from the crate shadows and threads into the press of shoppers. The market swallows him, saffron dust and bead-string glints breaking up his outline.
Ahead, the mercenary leader keeps moving, shoulders tight, never quite looking back. He turns through a stall lane and Thava follows on the same line, silent as a knife in cloth.
The gap widens and narrows with each bend, but Thava matches it, using hanging rugs and haggling backs as cover. The leader does not spot him.
At the edge of the market, the crowd thins. The leader crosses beneath a weathered arch into a side passage, and Thava glides after him without a sound.
Only when the last sellers fall behind does the leader slow. He is alone now, boxed in by stone walls and the soft echo of market noise far behind him.
A brass market token lies near Thava’s hand on the stones, and the service arch stands clear ahead. The path is open, but the man he hunts is finally isolated.
