Its ancient darkness beneath us. We need to find a way to end it.

The purified stone answers with a groan. The black seam twitches, then the floor plates shudder apart, as if Drix's words strike the lock itself.

The seal was never only a barrier. It is an anchor point, sunk deep into the tower's bones. Below it, a spiral stair opens into stale, buried air.

Then the breach was staged. Not failure, a lure.

Ancient, stagnant magic rolls up from the stairwell. The Hooded Figure shifts back, tense and wary, while the Stranger stares into the dark with hard suspicion.

If something waited under this tower, it wanted Drix to touch the seal.

The stairwell yawns wider, black stone descending out of sight, and the air seems to listen for Drix's next move.

Drix cuts off the last of his probing and steps onto the first stair, keeping his mind tight and narrow. The vault air climbs around him, cold and old, while the seal behind him gives one sharp twitch.

Quickly, then. If it noticed you, we do not linger in its sight.

The Hooded Figure follows at once, one hand skimming the wall for balance. The Stranger hesitates only a breath, eyes fixed on the darkness below, then moves after them.

This was staged. Someone wanted the lock touched, and wanted witnesses when it opened.

I have been probing it too much. It knows I am here. Let us move fast.

His words echo down the stairwell, thin and stark. The ancient pressure below stirs in answer, not a strike, only a listening weight that makes the stone feel crowded.

Drix descends several turns in a blur of careful steps, staff tucked close, spellbook held shut against his ribs. By the time the stair bends out of sight, the others are committed behind him, and the vault waits ahead with the breach still awake.
