The Hooded Figure

Moonlight spills across a broken watchtower, silver on old stone and fresh scorch marks. Drix stands amid drifting ash, staff in hand, spellbook half-open at his belt.

A circle of runes burns blue on the floor, and inside it a second set answers back, cleaner, sharper, as if someone else is reading the same script.

At the far arch, a hooded figure steps from shadow to stone, one gloved hand lifted in warning. A narrow satchel hangs at their side, marked with chalk sigils.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Easy, mage. I am not here to wrest your throat or your work.

The figure glances at the second rune-circle, then at Drix, as if measuring which is more dangerous.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

You are not the only one with access. Someone opened the ward below, and now both our marks are answering the breach.

A low tremor rolls through the tower. Dust sifts from the ceiling. The blue light in the floor gutters once, then flares brighter, hungry and unstable.

If you want your notes intact, come see what is waking under the ruin. Or stand there and let it climb up alone.

I keep my guard up and follow him to investigate

Drix lowers nothing, but he moves with care, staff angled between himself and the glowing floor as he follows the hooded figure toward the stairwell.

The runes on the stones pulse under his boots, and the answer-mark beside them flickers in time with a deeper vibration from below.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Stay behind me if you mean to keep that guard up. The breach is talking louder now.

Dust shakes loose again from the broken arch overhead, and both of them angle toward the dark mouth of the stair.

Drix

Drix

The marks are reacting to something below, not just the circle in the floor.

The hooded figure starts down first, one hand on the wall, and the stairwell gives back a cold draft that smells of wet stone and old ash.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

There. Look at the chamber below, and tell me if your wards can name it.

I fill my eyes with arcane energy to get a better look

The Waking Ruin
The Hooded Figure
The Hooded Figure

Drix draws arcane light into his eyes, and the stairwell below sharpens into cold detail.

Drix

Drix

Old warding. Fresh breach. Something beneath is pushing through both.

In the chamber below, the floor sigils twist around a black seam in the stone, their pattern broken by a pulse that answers from underneath.

The magic is not random. It is a seal, and it is straining against a sleeping presence below the ruin.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

You see it now. Tell me if you can name the thing that presses back.

The seam flares once, and a deep throb rolls up through the stair like a slow heartbeat.

I close the ground and reinforce the seal

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +2)

The Waking Ruin
The Hooded Figure
The Hooded Figure

Drix plants his staff against the broken sigils and speaks the shape of the seal into the stone. Blue light threads through the cracks, stitching the pattern back together.

The black seam narrows under the pressure of his magic, then seals with a hard, clean crack. The throb below turns muffled, contained.

Drix

Drix

It holds. The ward is closed.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Good. Whatever wakes below has been checked, for now.

The chamber settles. Loose dust drifts from the stair, and the rune circles dim from flare to ember.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

But listen, the seal was broken from the inside. Do you see that?

I close my eye and focus on energies with ill intent

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +1)

The Waking Ruin
The Hooded Figure
The Hooded Figure

Drix closes his eye and lets the ward-chatter sink through stone, dust, and old bloodless magic. The chamber answers with a sour, crawling note.

Drix

Drix

That is not a simple leak. It has intent.

The ill will gathers below the seal, distinct at last, not one pressure but many, twined together and straining in the dark.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

You feel it too. It is awake enough to search.

Blue ward-light flickers along the rejoined sigils, then steadies as Drix’s focus catches a hidden seam in the warding. Something is pressed against it, aware of him.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Now you know why I called you here. Can you name what hides under the ruin?

The presence below shifts, and the seal rings once like struck glass, waiting for Drix’s answer.

I attempt to name what it is through arcane meditation

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +2)

The Waking Ruin
The Hooded Figure
The Hooded Figure

Drix stills his breath and sinks inward. The seal’s pulse becomes a pattern, then a voice without words, vast and layered like roots under stone.

Drix

Drix

A bound swarm, old as the warding itself.

Images flood his mind, not of one thing, but many, coiled around a buried heart. Hunger. Memory. A lattice of stolen names.

At the center of it all, Drix sees a shape pressed into the dark, winged in thought and chained by the ruin’s broken work.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

You have it, then. Say it plain.

The ward-light flares once around the seam, and the thing below answers with a patient shudder, as if listening for the name that will define it.

Drix

Drix

It is a many-bound presence, something gathered and waking beneath the seal.
