Thirty Seconds to the Vault

Jesse stands beside the staff entrance in his security disguise. The watcher lies motionless near the wall, while the bank’s emergency channel hisses in his earpiece.

Jesse

Jesse

You killed the watcher, John. I said no casualties. That call could have been handled.

John Cavier

He reached for the phone and made the choice for us. The room is still contained, and nobody inside is hurt.

John remains near the entrance, watching the restrained occupants through the secured doorway. Inside, fear and silence hold the room while the unanswered call hangs over the operation.

Jesse plants the C4 against the vault-side barrier and arms the thirty-second timer. The display begins counting down beside the sealed access point.

John Cavier

John Cavier

Thirty seconds. Then we take the vault and leave before whoever received that call reaches this place.

The emergency channel crackles with a fragment of distant dispatch traffic. The timer continues downward, and John waits for Jesse’s next command.

“When the bomb explodes Jesse enters the vault while John waits lookout in the main entrance.”

The timer reaches zero. The charge blasts through the vault-side barrier, filling the corridor with dust and a sharp pressure wave that knocks loose ceiling panels.

Jesse moves through the opening toward the vault, but the damaged barrier buckles inward and drops across the access, sealing the breach beneath twisted metal and concrete.

Jesse

Jesse

The breach is blocked from this side.

I’m watching the entrance. Nobody’s coming through, but that blast changed the whole building.

Dust rolls through the staff corridor and sets off a shrill secondary alarm. Inside the vault, the door remains intact beyond the collapsed opening.

Jesse reaches the obstruction and tests the nearest gap. It is too narrow for passage, while fragments continue settling from above.

John Cavier

John Cavier

The direct route is gone. I can hold the entrance, but we need another way into that vault now.

“Shit shit. Alright look I have a secondary charge we can use on the rubble it should shake enough loose to where I can get in now. But monitor the police channel for any activity that bomb was louder than expected.”

Jesse

Shit, shit. I have a secondary charge. I’ll use it on the rubble. Monitor the police channel for activity. That blast was too loud.

John Cavier

John Cavier

Copy. I’m on the channel. Give me a clear warning before you set it.

Jesse places the secondary charge against the collapsed barrier, checks the remaining cover, and arms it. John lowers his voice while dispatch traffic crackles through the earpiece.

Police units are being sent toward the bank for an alarm and reported blast. They’re not on the block yet.

The charge snaps through the obstruction with a contained concussion. Dust surges down the corridor, and the weakened rubble shifts aside enough to open a person-sized passage.

Jesse gets through into the vault access space, but the blast tears his sleeve and leaves a fresh scrape along his forearm. The secondary charge is spent.

John Cavier

John Cavier

You’re in. I’ll keep the entrance covered and track the police. Move fast, Jesse. Their response is already coming.

“SHIT. I’m gonna run in and grab as much of the gold and cash as I can let me know when they are 45 seconds out.”

Jesse

Shit. I’m running in and grabbing as much gold and cash as I can. Tell me when they’re forty-five seconds out.

Jesse runs through the opened passage into the vault access space. Shelves and trays hold bundled cash and compact gold reserves beneath emergency lighting and drifting dust.

He fills the available bags with cash bricks and gold bars, taking the most valuable weight he can carry before the alarms settle into a constant shriek.

John Cavier

John Cavier

Police are still moving. Dispatch puts the first units forty-five seconds out, maybe less if they get a clear route.

A ceiling panel drops behind Jesse and cracks across the floor, scattering dust over the remaining shelves. His forearm scrape opens again, staining the torn sleeve.

Jesse secures the loaded bags and turns back through the passage with the gold and cash in hand. The vault has been stripped of the portable valuables he can carry.

John Cavier

John Cavier

Thirty seconds now. Entrance is still clear, but you need to move. I’ll get us to the car.
