The Shieldmaiden’s blunted sword meets Asbjorn’s again, ringing beneath the low roof. They trade measured cuts and guarded steps until breath fogs and their arms begin to tremble.

The Shieldmaiden

The Shieldmaiden

Enough. A warrior who cannot recognize fatigue will soon mistake stubbornness for courage.

She lowers her sword and accepts Asbjorn’s offered hand. Her reserved expression eases into a tired smile before they set the weapons aside and turn toward the sagging roof.

Over the next days, they clear broken reeds, replace warped boards, and pack clay into the walls. The Wolf Spirit watches from its tether, quiet beside the hearth.

The Shieldmaiden

The Shieldmaiden

You learn quickly when you listen. I had expected a proud Norse warrior to argue with every instruction.

Her fondness shows in small mercies: the warmer cup placed near his hand, the patient correction, and the way she lingers after work is done. Their rough shelter slowly becomes a home.

The Shieldmaiden

The Shieldmaiden

The roof will hold tonight. Tomorrow, perhaps, you can teach me another stroke. And tell me what you would make this hearth become.

She rests her hand against the repaired beam, waiting beside the quiet fire for Asbjorn’s answer.

Make the shared hearth a lasting refuge

“I smile then I head to the bed as I lay in it and relax but not before removing my armor, my bracers, my helmet, and my sword. "Well, perhaps the gods will favor us in such a way where this hearth will turn into a big beautiful village with me as the Jarl and you by my side."”

Asbjorn smiles, then removes his armor, bracers, helmet, and sword, setting each piece within reach. He crosses to the bed and lies down, letting the day’s weariness settle from his limbs.

Well, perhaps the gods will favor us, and this hearth will become a great, beautiful village, with me as Jarl and you by my side.

The hope leaves him exposed in a way armor never does. His voice catches on the final words, and the brief hesitation is plain in the quiet room.

The Shieldmaiden

The Shieldmaiden

A great village is a bold dream. Yet if you would be its Jarl, you must first learn to keep one small hearth worthy of trust.

She draws the blanket over him with practical gentleness, then sits beside the bed. Across the room, the Wolf Spirit watches quietly near the hearth.

A small den may shelter a greater road. Rest, marked one. The hearth has heard the shape of your hope.

The Shieldmaiden’s hand rests against the repaired beam. Asbjorn relaxes beneath the blanket, while the cost of speaking so openly lingers as a visible uncertainty in his face.

“As I sleep I am visited by the Goddess Freyja whom provides warmth and comfort to my aching body, she then shows me her hall of the dead Fólkvangr. Comprised of mostly women and battle tacticians as opposed to primarily hardened warriors. "Lady Freyja...thank you for bringing me comfort."”

A Shelter Becomes Home

Sleep gathers Asbjorn into a deep hush. Warmth spreads through his aching limbs, gentle as sunlight through winter cloud, while the small hearth and the goddess's presence become one calm shelter.

Freyja leads him beyond the walls of the dream to Fólkvangr, a vast golden hall beneath a clear sky. Women and battle tacticians fill its benches, speaking softly over maps, weapons, and remembered victories.

Freyja

Here, strength is not measured only by the force of a blow. Those who guided others, held a line, or chose wisely in peril have a place here.

Lady Freyja...thank you for bringing me comfort.

Freyja

Freyja

You sought the gods with an open hand, Asbjorn. Rest is not weakness, and comfort freely given is still a blessing.

The hall remains fully revealed to him, its ordered calm and living counsel clear in every detail. Yet the vision withholds how each soul is chosen, leaving that question unsettled when dawn begins to pale.

Freyja's warmth follows Asbjorn back into the crofter's house. He wakes beneath the blanket with his body eased, while the memory of Fólkvangr rests bright but incomplete behind his eyes.

“I close my eyes and rest as Lady Freyja watches over me as she whispers in my ear. I feel even more comfortable than before as Valkyries surround me watching over me. I feel their presence in my rest causng me to smile feeling divine presence in such a comforting way.”

Asbjorn closes his eyes, and the crofter’s house falls away into golden quiet. Freyja remains beside him, her presence gentle as warmth held beneath a winter blanket.

Freyja

Freyja

Rest, seeker. No trial waits upon this breath. Let the comfort of the gods reach you without fear or striving.

Her whisper brushes his ear though no mortal breath stirs the room. The warmth deepens through his limbs, and his face eases into a quiet smile.

Around the resting warrior, Valkyries gather in silent watch, their forms bright against the dream’s boundless gold. They stand with calm attention, neither demanding nor judging.

Their presence settles over the hush like a protective circle. Freyja’s hand remains near his brow, while the distant hall’s voices soften into one peaceful murmur.

Freyja

Freyja

You are watched over, Asbjorn. Sleep deeply, and carry this peace with you when the waking world calls you back.

The divine presence holds without interruption. Asbjorn rests more comfortably than before, surrounded by Freyja’s kindness and the steadfast guardianship of the Valkyries.

“I open my eyes as I look around in this realm of dreams, I bow before Lady Freyja "Mother Freyja, it is an honor to be in this realm with you...I thank you for this opportunity to be here in your presence and that of the Valkyries."”

SUCCESS (Good Theology, rolled +0)

Asbjorn opens his eyes within the golden realm. He rises beneath the clear dream-sky and bows deeply before Freyja, while the watching Valkyries remain still around her.

Mother Freyja, it is an honor to be in this realm with you. I thank you for this opportunity to stand in your presence and that of the Valkyries.

The words carry clearly through the quiet hall. The Valkyries incline their heads, and the golden air seems to receive his gratitude without judgment.

Freyja

Freyja

Rise, Asbjorn. Gratitude spoken with an honest heart honors both the guest and the host. You have entered this place with reverence, and you are welcome here.

Freyja extends one hand toward him, her presence warm and steady. Behind her, the hall opens into peaceful distance, where honored dead listen beside their maps and weapons.

Look upon Fólkvangr without fear, seeker. Ask what you wish, and listen well. Wisdom here is shared by those who endured, served, and remembered.

The dream settles into attentive stillness. Freyja waits before him, and the Valkyries keep their calm watch as the honored hall makes room for his questions.

“I look around in awe "What....what am I doing here? I thought Fólkvangr was reserved for dead warriors?" I smile as I gaze upon the valkyries "Valkyires....the ones who choose the dead and take them to Fólkvangr and Valhalla...."”

What... what am I doing here? I thought Fólkvangr was reserved for dead warriors. Valkyries... the ones who choose the dead and take them to Fólkvangr and Valhalla.

Asbjorn looks across the golden hall in awe, smiling toward the watching Valkyries. Their calm faces do not soften into welcome, but neither do they turn him away.

Freyja

Freyja

Your learning reaches the gate, but not through it. Fólkvangr welcomes the honored dead, yes, yet you stand here as a living guest beneath a goddess’s invitation.

At Freyja’s words, the distant hall blurs. Beyond its benches, Asbjorn glimpses the small crofter’s house and his sleeping body beneath its blanket, joined to this realm by a narrowing golden thread.

Freyja

Freyja

You are not being chosen for death, Asbjorn. You are being shown a place of wisdom. Ask the Valkyries what they witness, or follow that thread and wake with what you have learned.

The golden thread steadies, offering a clear way back while the hall remains open before him. The Valkyries watch in silence, leaving the next choice to Asbjorn.
