The Financial Investigator

The financial investigator finishes checking Mara’s chain-of-custody notes and seals the paper set in its evidence sleeve. Alex and Mara remain at the table; Rachel, the therapist, the child, and the famous client are still concealed at Dev Null Cafe.

Angela Stone

Angela Stone

Your handling is validated. The evidence remained controlled, unaltered, and within the agreed boundary. I can attach that finding to the settlement request.

A nervous young adult man approaches with a wrinkled receipt clutched in both hands. Elias Ward, with a lean build, warm brown skin, close-cropped black hair, and a narrow face wears a faded courier jacket, narrow glasses, and keeps glancing toward the lounge entrance.

Elias Ward

Elias Ward

I was told to bring this to Mara. It came from a bank document-disposal vendor, not through your formal request.

Elias places the receipt on the table without sitting. Its recent timestamp and hold-release reference match the Harbor Meridian transfer, but an office code appears that is absent from the investigator’s request.

Angela Stone

Angela Stone

Where did you get this, Mr. Ward? That office code was not included in any settlement record I requested.

Elias Ward

Elias Ward

I made the delivery for a contractor. The disposal vendor gave me the packet, then told me not to discuss the office. Someone has been watching the entrance.

Authenticate the receipt as a usable settlement lead

Director's note

You pull your backpack from the floor, taking out your burner laptop. Your personal one is always under lock and key at the cafe's 'private lounge. Setting it down, you slip in you PHLAK drive.

“"May I see that? I'd like a moment to validate it, if I may?" you ask the investigator, who from her business card you read is named Angela Stone.”

Angela Stone

Yes. Keep it on the table, and do not fold or mark it. I want your observations, not alterations.

Alex pulls his backpack from beneath the table and takes out the burner laptop. His personal computer remains secured in Dev Null Cafe’s private lounge. He sets the burner beside the evidence sleeve and slips in the PHLAK drive.

Angela slides Elias’s receipt across the table. Alex compares its timestamp, hold-release reference, office code, and paper security marks against the preserved Harbor Meridian records without changing the document.

The timestamp and hold-release reference match; the office code is the new variable.

Angela Stone

Angela Stone

What do you validate?

Alex Mishyma

Alex Mishyma

The transfer reference, timestamp, and release notation match the Harbor Meridian record. The office code is absent from your request, but it is consistent with an internal routing or review office. I would preserve it as a separate lead, not treat it as proof of the sender.

The wonderful thing about office codes is that someone is always keeping a digital copy. I can cross-reference it with the company database, strictly for the investigation.

Alex smiles and enters the office code into the burner laptop’s isolated review tools. The PHLAK drive compares the receipt against preserved records without altering either source.

A matching internal entry appears: Office 4B, Harbor Meridian’s contracted settlement-review desk. The record identifies a release authorization tied to the same transfer and timestamp.

Alex Mishyma

Alex Mishyma

There it is. Office 4B handled the release authorization. The code does not name the sender, but it places the decision inside the company’s settlement workflow.

Angela Stone

Angela Stone

That is more than a stray vendor mark. Preserve the entry, its access time, and the authorization trail. I can attach them to the formal request.

Elias Ward

Elias Ward

The contractor said the office was supposed to stay out of the paperwork. If it appears in the internal record, someone expected it to remain invisible.

Alex saves the cross-reference as a separate investigative note, keeping the child’s protected information absent. Angela records the result while Mara watches the lounge entrance.

Finish the workday, get paid, settle the trio, return home, and tell Father about the day.

Alex Mishyma leaves quiet records lounge near South Station behind and arrives at Dev Null Cafe.

“"Look, as much as I would love to be of more help, I need to get back to thee cyber cafe. My boss Dev is gonna rip me a new hole if I'm not back to close." You leave out your other objectives. It cleared. Services rendered above and beyond, exactly as you put it. The client approved the full payment, and I will send the prepaid card here.

Mara’s confirmation comes through Alex’s phone, her voice distant and controlled. A payment notification arrives moments later, showing the agreed amount released to Dev Null Cafe for collection.

The investigator has the settlement lead, Office 4B, and the formal request. You can leave the deeper review to us for now.

From behind the counter, the closing roster flashes on the cafe terminal. Upstairs, everything looks ordinary, but a fresh message from an unknown number appears beneath Mara’s payment confirmation: You brought the evidence home.

“(Alex frowns, and immediately puts all the sensitive materials and information he has gathered together thus far into the shared fireproof/gun safe you and Dev share to keep the lounge's most secret secrets safe. Dev spent a fortune on it.... it could take a grenade blast with barely a scratch. Once that is done, you head upstairs, typing back a reply. 'A ghost truly has no home.' Pocketing your phone, Dev approaches. He is a taller, middle aged man with a wiry build, brown eyes, and long black hair that is dyed blue at the tips. "So, were you a white hat today, or a black hat," he inquires with interest, handing you the cafe keys while he pours himself a coffee, watching as the gamers slowly begin to close their sessions and head out for the night. “As you say a polite good night to thee last of the gamer patrons, you slide down the external cage door across the front entrance, lock the doors, and sigh, heading back to the counter to pour yourself a small cup. Dev waits, but you can tell he is eager to hear what you have to reveal. Hee is more than just the owner and your boss... he is a mentor and friend, probably the closest you have in the city. "Alright kid, spill. You were gone for four hours today. So long as you give me a damn good story, I won't dock your pay." You chuckle, taking a sip of coffee, lighting a smoke and offering him one. "Oh, it's a story alright." You begin from the beginning, coming to work and finding the trio, all the way up to you getting paid and the mysterious text, sparing no details. Once I can find a safe place for the kid and his guardians, so to speak, to lay low properly, I think I should lay low for a couple days. If that's cool with you, I mean, you say as you work. “"Thanks Dev, I really do owe ya one for this. Get home safe, yeah?" As Dev heads out, Alex finishes his work, and then heads to the secure lounge, entering the offered keycode to open the secure doors. Once inside, he calls out to the trio. "It's safe, we're closed now and all sealed up. Let's get you all some food while I fill you in on my findings about little man here," you smile to the child. "I still haven't yet been told your names. As you all probably heard, I'm Alex," you say as you lead them upstairs. I can arrange a discreet legal contact through people I trust, but only after we verify they are not connected to North Harbor or the financial trail. Samuel cannot be moved casually.

Yes, but not because he is powerful or valuable in any ordinary sense. Samuel remembers details from the institution and its transfers that someone desperately needs erased.

“Shouldering your bag, you make your way to the staff exit, locking up behind you as you head up out to the main street. Even at this hour, Boston is a hustle and bustle, and being in the South Side doesn't make it less. You make your way to the train station, getting off at the third to last stop. Now, only a fifteen-minute walk to the apartment building you stay at with you dad. It's not upper-class, but the hard working, slightly better off middle-class section of town. Passing by some of the guys in the neighborhood you frequent with sometimes, you shoot a smile and a nod, reaching for your smokes. Out of the corner of your eye, you see someone in alley nearby, crouched and watching you. Alex reaches for his cigarettes and pauses as if lighting one. Without turning, he tracks the watcher through footsteps, shifting shadows, and the faint scrape of a shoe behind him.

“You stop and turn, a rather annoyed expression on your face as you go back for you lighter. You give the stalker a wide berth but gently say in passing. "You suck as a tail. Find a new job." Fair criticism. For what it is worth, the cab route will be logged if you use the nearest stand. Make the driver drop you short, and avoid the main entrance.

Alex hails a cab after another turn and gives an address about a block from the family apartment. He watches the mirrors, but the taxi’s route still leaves a brief, traceable line toward his neighborhood.

He exits early and enters the side alleys, moving through familiar gaps between fences and service doors. Every unfamiliar footstep would ring here like a pebble in a tin can.

Alex Mishyma

Alex Mishyma

The cab exposed the neighborhood, but not the building. The alleys give me a way to check whether anyone followed.

At a fenced junction, Alex spots a second route leading toward an old delivery court and a shuttered laundromat. It offers cover and a clear view of the apartment block, but taking it means leaving the safest familiar path.

Alex Mishyma

Alex Mishyma

Inside, Alex takes the stairs rather than the elevator. Halfway up, he accelerates to the top landing, slips behind the corner, and watches the lower stairwell.

Seconds pass. Pipes tick, distant doors open and close, and the building’s quiet hub of residents murmurs through the walls. No second set of steps follows.

Alex listens longer, checking the rear entrance through the stairwell gap. The door remains closed, and the corridor beyond it stays empty.

The stairwell lights blink once, then settle into a weaker yellow glow. From somewhere below, the rear entrance buzzer sounds three times in quick succession.

The Building Superintendent

The Building Superintendent

Everyone stay inside for the moment. We have a door problem at the rear entrance, and I am checking it now.

The announcement ends, but the buzzer sounds again, longer this time. A metal scrape rises from the lower stairwell, followed by careful footsteps stopping beneath Alex’s landing.

Alex’s phone vibrates in his pocket. The screen shows an unknown number and a new message: You chose the long way. That was wise. It will not be enough.

The Building Superintendent

The Building Superintendent

Is someone up there? Do not come down. I have found damage around the lock, and whoever caused it may still be nearby.

A second set of footsteps shifts below, lighter and quicker than the superintendent’s. Then the rear door opens, letting cold street air spill through the stairwell as someone enters without using the buzzer.

“'Dammit,', you think. As quietly as you can, you head up the stairs. Two flights to go, first door on the left. The message sends as Alex reaches the next landing. He gives the agreed knock at the first door on the left, but one familiar stair groans sharply behind him.

Alex holds his breath and listens behind him. The apartment door remains shut, while the hatch hinge gives a faint metallic creak beneath his shifting weight.

He reaches the pharmacy’s bright side entrance, passes beneath its exterior cameras, and continues toward the bus stop without crossing the station concourse. No one changes pace behind him.

I have your route marker. You are on the public side, your timing is clean, and nobody has followed you into the pharmacy frontage. Keep moving normally.

The bus shelter appears ahead beneath a working streetlamp. A security guard exiting the pharmacy glances at Alex, then gives him a brief nod and holds the shelter gate open.

That guard just cleared the shelter without knowing you. Use the open gate, choose a seat with the street in view, and call me once the bus arrives.

Alex settles beneath the shelter’s camera, still looking casual as traffic slides past. The route is complete, and the pharmacy’s camera coverage gives him an unasked-for witness and a recorded arrival time.
