The pale testimony continues glowing through the coffin mortar while Elian’s shade extends one blurred hand toward Kaelus. Mara’s distant laughter gathers in the hollow.
One by one, the five blackened staples turn silver. The burial chamber brightens with their cold reflection, while Elias remains near the entrance and Kaelus stands before the open niche.

Elias
This is the final witness rite. Elian is reclaiming the memory Veyrath stole, and Kaelus is the vessel through which it was carried.

Kaelus
Then let him take it. I have carried Mara’s laughter without knowing her face. It was never truly mine.

Elias
Do not mistake removal for healing. The memory has shaped you for years. If it leaves, something in you may leave with it.
The laughter circles closer, layered with rain and the distant toll of a bell. Elian’s hand remains outstretched, waiting just beyond Kaelus’s reach.

Elian Voss
Witness what was denied. Name what was stolen. Then choose whether the hollow remains yours.

Separate Veyrath’s claim from Kaelus
“I name Mara and guide Kaelus’s stolen laughter toward Elian.”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +0)

Imogen
Mara.
Imogen speaks the name into the hollow and guides the circling laughter toward Elian’s outstretched hand. The sound gathers obediently around Kaelus.

Kaelus
Mara. She laughed when the bell struck twice.
The laughter leaves Kaelus in a pale, audible stream, carrying rain, bell tones, and a warmth the burial chamber has forgotten. It crosses the space between them.

Elian Voss
Witnessed. Remembered. Returned.
The stream enters Elian’s blurred hand. His missing features sharpen for one breath, and the five silver staples flare as the stolen memory settles into its rightful witness.

Kaelus
I can still remember her name. The hollow did not take it with the laughter.
“Has Veyrath’s claim truly left Kae”
NO, BUT (Even, rolled 60)
The laughter settles into Elian’s blurred form, but a thin black filament remains threaded from Kaelus’s wrist into the coffin mortar.

Kaelus
It did not leave. Veyrath kept the part that made the memory useful to it.
The clear letter beneath Kaelus’s scar darkens again, though the corruption no longer spreads. A narrow silver line now runs from it toward the buried staples.

Elian Voss
The claim is divided. The memory is mine, but the authority remains bound to the threshold.

Elias
Then we have an opening. The filament is not anchored in Kaelus anymore. It terminates at the fifth staple.
At the fifth staple, a seam appears in the coffin stone, revealing a concealed passage descending beneath the bell tower. Cold air rises from it, carrying the scent of rain.

Kaelus
Veyrath is still holding the door, but it no longer holds all of me.
“I enter the passage beneath the bell tower”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +1)

Imogen steps through the concealed seam beneath the bell tower. The passage receives her without resistance, descending beneath old masonry slick with cold condensation.
The chamber above fades behind her. Elias follows with the ledger and sealed lock, while Kaelus enters last, his silver-threaded wrist held close.

Elias
The passage is older than the chapel. These stones were laid before Veyrath was given a name.
Thin witness marks line the walls at shoulder height. Each has been crossed through, except one that glimmers faintly as Imogen passes.

Kaelus
The fifth staple opened this route. It is not leading us to Veyrath. It is leading us beneath the place where the vow began.
Behind them, Elian’s shade remains in the burial hollow, framed by the silver staples. Ahead, unseen water drips in a slow rhythm like a distant bell.

Elias
Keep moving. The threshold accepted Imogen as witness, and whatever waits below now knows exactly who has entered.
“I follow the passage toward Veyrath’s remaining claim”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +1)

Imogen follows the passage downward, one hand grazing the wet masonry. The witness marks fade behind her, replaced by a continuous black line guiding her beneath the chapel.
The corridor opens into a circular chamber beneath the bell tower. Dark water fills its center, perfectly still, surrounding a stone threshold sunk into the floor.

Elias
This is the remaining claim. Not a prison, exactly. A place where Veyrath keeps authority over every vow spoken above it.
At the threshold’s center rests a shallow depression shaped like an open hand. The silver thread from Kaelus’s wrist extends into it and ends there, taut but no longer pulling.

Kaelus
It is holding the part of me that answered when Mara’s memory was taken. I can feel it, but it cannot command me from here.
Imogen reaches the inner edge of the threshold. Beneath the black water, five submerged witness marks become visible, and the fifth bears her name in fresh, pale lettering.

Elias
You have reached it. Veyrath’s remaining claim is exposed, and the chamber has accepted you as the living witness who can decide what happens next.
“I demand Veyrath release Kaelus”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +2)

Imogen
Veyrath, release Kaelus.
Her demand crosses the still water without echo. The five submerged marks flare together, and the silver thread at Kaelus’s wrist pulls taut.

Veyrath
The witness commands what the vow denied. Authority recognizes authority.
The open-hand depression fills with black water. The thread withdraws from Kaelus’s wrist and coils into the stone, leaving his skin unmarked beneath the fading sigil.

Kaelus
It is gone. The pressure, the listening, the part of me that answered before I could choose.
Across the chamber, the fifth mark bearing Imogen’s name cracks cleanly down its center. The threshold remains intact, but its claim on Kaelus has ended.

Elias
You did not bargain with it. You asserted the witness’s authority, and Veyrath obeyed. Kaelus is himself again.
