The thin cry from beneath the stones sharpens, exactly as before, only now it rings like a bell struck underwater. The bog answers at once. Mud trembles. Black water bulges upward around Imogen’s boots and Elias’s stance.

A childlike shape rises from the churn, spectral and incomplete, its face slipping between a dead girl’s resemblance and a hunger with no features at all. It reaches not for help, but toward the living pulse in the air.

Kaelus

Kaelus

No... that sound.

The figure wails again, and the note pulls at the body like a hook in soft flesh. The peat around the stones liquefies, opening a slow, greedy throat at the center of the circle.

Elias

Elias

It was never calling for rescue. It was calling for a host.

The apparition tilts its head, almost listening, then the bog churns harder, as if pleased that the living have understood too late.

Shatter the bog’s lure

Can the sigils on the stones withstand the force of the entity's emergence?

The stones are not just markers, they are anchors. The light within the carvings is holding firm against the pull.

As the entity lunges, the ancient sigils flare with a cold, rhythmic violet pulse. The ground beneath the stones remains rigid, refusing to yield to the bog's hunger, effectively pinning the apparition's reach to the very edge of the circle.

I back away from the stone circle

Imogen shifts backward from the circle, and the slick peat gives under her boots without taking her. The violet pulse stays inside the stones, while the thing in the water stretches after her and cannot cross.

Kaelus

Kaelus

No. Keep away from the center... it wants the gap, not the stones.

The sinkhole breathes once, slow and wet, and the barrier answers with a sharp flare. Mud sloughs inward at the rim, but the circle holds its shape.

Elias

Elias

If the boundary stays lit, it cannot reach her from here.

The childlike figure thins at the edges, its pale shape breaking into the black water like reflected paper torn apart. The listening hush around the bog deepens.

Imogen

Imogen

The stones are holding. The thing is not.

Kaelus turns hard toward the dark seam in the water, then back to Imogen, too hungry and too afraid to stand still. The barrier hums louder, and the nearest stone cracks with a brief violet spark.

I keep backing away from the circle

Imogen keeps backing off, heel by heel, and the peat finally lets her go. Her boot slips free with a wet suck, but she stays upright, katana still low at her side.

The motion jerks the circle’s edge wider than before. Mud pours into the shallow gap she leaves behind, and the nearest sigil flashes hard enough to sting the eye.

Kaelus

Kaelus

Stop moving. It feels the loss.

The childlike shape in the water splits into pale strips, then pulls itself together again, thin and shivering at the barrier. The black surface below it dimples inward like a mouth testing a seam.

Elias

Elias

Imogen, away from the stone line. Now.

The cracked stone answers with a violet pulse, then a hairline fragment drops into the mud. The hum of the circle falters for one breath, and the sinkhole rim sags toward the opening.

Imogen gets clear of the edge, but the cut leaves her with one boot coated in clinging black peat and the circle louder behind her. Something in the water presses toward the gap, waiting for the next shift.

I drive the katana into the black seam

Imogen drives the katana down into the black seam. The blade bites through the skin of water and into something colder beneath, and the bog gives a wet, choking shudder.

The pale shape in the water snaps flat, then fractures into drifting scraps. The seam jerks sideways from the steel, as if something unseen has been pinned by the wound.

Kaelus

Kaelus

No. Hold it there.

Violet light flares across the nearest sigils in a hard, ugly pulse. The sinkhole rim grinds inward, then checks itself, mud sloughing off the edge in heavy folds.

Elias

Elias

That did it. Keep pressure on the seam.

The black water stops pressing forward and starts leaking around the blade instead, hissing softly against the iron. The barrier still trembles, but the lure inside the bog looks torn apart, its pull broken for the moment.
