The ground liquefies under Imogen’s boots. Black water surges up in a cold sheet, and the bog gives a final, choking heave as if something deep below has been torn loose.

At the edge of the flood, the Grave Warden stands unnervingly still, coat hem darkening, eyes locked on the wax-wrapped bundle in Imogen’s hands. The entity is sinking, but its corruption keeps pouring out with the water.

Malakor

Malakor

Hand it over. While there is still a bargain to keep.

Elias slips in the mire and catches himself on a root, jaw tight. Kaelus braces beside him, one hand spread against the collapsing earth, his sigils faintly burning beneath the sludge.

Elias

Elias

Don’t listen to him. The seal is failing, but it is not gone yet.

Kaelus

Kaelus

The old pressure is breaking. If the bundle stays in the water, the rest may follow it under.

The bundle twitches in Imogen’s grip. Under the black water, a pale glow flickers once, then dims, leaving only a widening stain and a path of cracked stones leading toward the Warden.

Back away. The bog is taking everything.

Imogen's voice cracks across the flood. The Warden's stare shifts, not frightened, but measured, as if weighing the warning against the bundle and the collapsing earth.

Malakor

Malakor

Then it will take you too, if you stay in its reach.

The cracked stones shudder. Black water surges through them, and the route between Imogen and the Warden caves inward with a wet groan.

The Warden finally gives ground, one step, then another, his coat flaring as he retreats from the lip of the flood.

Elias

Elias

That is far enough. Move.

Kaelus turns his shoulder to the water and drags himself back from the broken edge. The bundle stays tight in Imogen's grip as the bog gulps at the space where the Warden stood.

Is the Warden still able to take the bundle?

You cling to that relic as if it were a life raft, Imogen, but you do not see the threads already woven into your own skin.

Imogen

Imogen

The frost on the bundle is pulsing in time with the Warden's heartbeat, not the bog's.

Malakor

Malakor

I am Malakor, and I have walked these peat-choked paths since before your ancestors learned to fear the dark. That bundle is not a seal, it is a tether, and it will return to my hands the moment your resolve falters.

Imogen fires. The shot hammers the black water beside Malakor's boots, and the bog answers with a violent splash. Mud and cold spray burst up around him, breaking his composure for the first time.

Malakor

Malakor

Enough. I said return it.

He shifts back a step, but the ground under his heel caves anyway, swallowing the edge he stood on. The water between them churns, hungry and uneven.

Elias

Elias

That got his attention.

Kaelus drags a shaking breath and stares at the collapsing bank, then at Malakor. The frost on the bundle pulses once, hard and bright, as if something inside hears the gunshot too.

Imogen

Imogen

The water took the shot before he could.

Malakor lowers his hand slowly, no longer smiling. Behind him, the bog cracks open wider, and a black seam of water slides toward his knees.

I keep the bundle out of his reach

Imogen yanks the bundle back against her chest as the bog heaves. Black water surges where Malakor stood, chewing at the broken edge he just lost.

Malakor

Malakor

You think distance matters? That thing still points to me.

Elias steps in beside Imogen, half-turned toward the sinking bank, his attention split between Malakor and the bundle in her grip.

Elias

Elias

Then we stop letting him steer it.

Kaelus’s gaze snaps to the bundle. The frost on its wax skin thins, and the pulse inside answers the water with a slow, ugly throb.

Kaelus

Kaelus

It is waking because he called it.

Malakor plants one foot on a firmer hummock and reaches out with the other hand, but the collapsing bank gives under him again. He overcommits, and the reach turns into a stumble.

Imogen keeps the bundle high and out of his grasp. For one tense second, his fingers close on only cold spray.

Malakor

Malakor

If it slips under, you all follow.

I back toward firmer ground with the bundle

Imogen gives ground in one smooth retreat, boots finding a firmer seam before the bank can chew them under. The bundle stays locked against her chest, dry wax scraping her coat as black water licks at the peat she just left behind.

Malakor

Malakor

You see? It still knows where I am.

The water answers him with a hungry pulse, swelling once against the broken edge. Elias catches the movement, then looks from the rising flood to the bundle in Imogen’s arms, his mouth tightening.

Elias

Elias

Then we stop feeding the line it follows.

Kaelus

Kaelus

It is not just following him anymore. It is listening.

Malakor lifts his hand again, but the bank gives a wet crack beneath his heel. He stops short, staring at the water as if it has started speaking back.

Malakor

Malakor

If you keep it, it will drag this whole place open.

The bundle gives a faint, ugly throb against Imogen’s ribs, and the black water shivers in reply. The closest stone edge groans under the pressure, waiting for someone to move first.

Imogen snaps the Desert Eagle up at the cracking bank. The shot goes wild, tearing a wet crater out of the peat instead of the edge. Mud jumps. The bank answers with a deeper, uglier crack.

The recoil jars her wrists, and the startled bundle surges against her chest. Its wax skin splits with a thin, black seam, leaking a breath of cold that makes the nearest water twitch.

Malakor

Malakor

No. That wakes it.

The broken bank gives way in a single sickening slide. A section of ground sloughs off into the flood, and the water claws higher, cutting off the last easy step back.

Elias

Elias

Imogen, drop low. Don't let it sight the opening.

Kaelus

Kaelus

Too late, it felt the pulse.

Under her hands, the bundle thuds once, hard as a trapped heartbeat. The black water bulges toward the fresh crater, drawn to the smell of torn peat and exposed ground.

Malakor

Malakor

If you cannot hold it, then I will take it from the mud.

Imogen fires low and fast, but the shot goes wide of Malakor’s hand. The barked crack knocks peat loose instead, and the mud spits up between them like a warning.

Malakor jerks back from the muzzle flash, fingers snatching empty air. The bundle stays against Imogen’s chest, but the black seam shivers wider, breathing cold into her coat.

Malakor

Malakor

You missed. It wants the opening, not the man.

The bank sags again under his shifting weight. Black water noses into the fresh crater, and the bog’s hungry pulse rolls under their feet, uneven and close.

Elias

Elias

Don’t give him the chance. Back off the edge.

Kaelus

Kaelus

He is reaching for the seam, not the bundle.

Malakor lowers one hand toward the mud, not surrendering, not retreating, testing the collapse for a path.

Imogen steps in and drives her shoulder into Malakor’s line, forcing his reaching hand off the seam. The split wax jerks away from the mud, and the black water misses its mouth for a heartbeat.

She plants her boot on the sagging edge and holds him there. Malakor loses the path he was testing, his weight sliding sideways as peat caves under his fingers.

Malakor

Malakor

No. That seam is the hinge.

The bundle answers with a hard, cold pulse, then the split opening spits out a thread of dark root and a silver ring, slick as if it has just been fished from deep water.

Elias

Elias

Imogen, keep him back. That ring was set in the first vow.

Kaelus

Kaelus

I remember stone under my knees, and the taste of iron in the air.

Malakor recoils from the exposed ring, face draining, and the bog’s pulse bucks beneath him as though something underneath has been struck awake.

Imogen drives both hands into Malakor and heaves. He goes off balance with a short, startled cry, boots skidding on the slick peat.

The bank gives way under him. One knee drops, then his hip hits the black water with a splash that sends a cold sheet over the exposed root thread.

Malakor

Malakor

No, wait, the ring, do not let it sink.

He reaches back toward the seam, but the collapsing edge folds under his weight and drags his hand away from the bundle.

Elias

Elias

Hold there, Imogen. If he touches it, he wakes the whole wound.

Kaelus

Kaelus

The vow is moving under us again.

Malakor is left half-submerged in the mire, staring at the silver ring as the bog’s uneven hunger pulses once, hard, beneath the water.
