Before Lucidus or Caelan can approach any passage, a woman emerges from the shadowed stair behind them. She is a gaunt young adult with frost-paled skin, tangled auburn hair, and a torn gray traveling coat stiff with ice; one sleeve hangs ragged from her arm.
She bears no hunter’s insignia. A sealed strip of black vellum is clenched in her bare hand, its wax marked with a symbol unlike the refuge’s crowned sigils.
The three passageways dim together as she steps into the firelit chamber. Beneath the basin, the unclaimed door gives one answering knock, deep enough to tremble through the stone.

Maereth
Do not open those paths. Not yet.
Caelan raises his shield and shifts between the stranger and Lucidus’s resting hollow, though he leaves the approaches to the basin unobstructed. His eyes fix on the black vellum.

Caelan
You entered through a sealed refuge stair. Explain yourself, and keep your hands where I can see them.

Maereth
I came because the sanctuary woke. The hunters are not the only ones who know the heir is here, and that letter carries a warning meant for Lucidus.

“I ask, approaching the woman "Who is searching for me? I know the hunters but what else?"”
SUCCESS (Fair Diplomacy, rolled +1)

Lucidus rises from the warmed hollow and approaches the frost-stiffened woman, keeping their injured arm close. Their claws scrape the stone, sounding sharply through the chamber.

Lucidus
Who is searching for me? I know the hunters, but what else?

Maereth
The Veiled Court. They are not hunters in the common sense. They seek the bloodline itself, to bind Valkonias’s heir before the dragon wakes.
The frost-stiffened woman raises the black vellum slightly, but does not offer it. Her gaze flicks to Lucidus’s horns, then to the unclaimed door beneath the basin.

Maereth
The Court sent no trackers. They sent a summons through old magic, and the refuge answered it. Your approach has made the seal mark you openly.
A red line briefly appears beneath Lucidus’s feet, tracing their outline before fading. Caelan shifts closer, shield angled toward the frost-stiffened woman without challenging Lucidus’s position.

Caelan
Then the cost of asking is clear. They know exactly where Lucidus stands, even if they do not yet know how to enter.

“I look between the two of them and ask, the woman "Do you know the way to Valkonias? Please, if they're trying to seal my bloodline then I need to reach him before they do."”
SUCCESS (Good Diplomacy, rolled -1)

Lucidus
Do you know the way to Valkonias? Please. If they are trying to seal my bloodline, I need to reach him before they do.
The frost-stiffened woman studies Lucidus, then unfolds the black vellum. Its unfamiliar symbol spills silver light across the floor, revealing a route beneath the refuge and eastward through the mountain.

Maereth
I know it. Valkonias sleeps beneath the eastern crown, beyond the Ashen Vein. This unclaimed door leads to the old descent, and I can guide you there.
The vellum’s seal cracks open with a sharp report. A thread of red fire leaps from the parchment to Lucidus’s fading mark, burning a precise line across their palm before sinking beneath the skin.

Maereth
That is the cost. The summons has marked you as its bearer. The Court will feel the mark awaken, but the route is now fixed and cannot be concealed from you.

Caelan
Then we have a direction, and a price plainly stated. I remain beside Lucidus, but I want to know whether this mark can be severed after Valkonias wakes.

Maereth
It can, if Valkonias accepts you before the Court reaches the sanctuary. We must open the unclaimed door now, and descend without touching the three crowned paths.
“I give a nod before gesturing for one of them to take the lead. I attempt to use a divine spell to hide myself from any markers the Veiled Court may have placed.”
FAILURE (Superb Magic, rolled -2)

Lucidus gives a brief nod, then gestures for one of them to lead. Caelan moves first, keeping his shield angled toward the unclaimed door while the frost-stiffened woman follows with the opened vellum.
Lucidus raises their marked palm and draws on a quiet divine current. Pale light gathers around their horns, scales, and fading red line, seeking every trace the Veiled Court may have planted.
The spell folds inward instead of concealing them. The red mark flares beneath their skin, and a thin crimson thread lashes toward the vellum before stopping at the unclaimed door.

Maereth
Do not cast again. The mark is not merely watching you. It is the key that reveals this descent.
The failed veil leaves Lucidus visible to the Court, but the crimson thread etches a hidden route across the door: a side passage branching away from the Ashen Vein.

Caelan
That is something useful. The Court may follow the mark, but this route can carry us beyond the path they expect.
The unclaimed door unlocks without opening, revealing a narrow seam and cold air beneath it. The three crowned paths remain untouched as the hidden route waits for their choice.
“"One of you two lead I can't do much at the moment."”
SUCCESS (Good Diplomacy, rolled +2)

Lucidus
One of you two lead. I cannot do much at the moment.

Caelan
I will lead. Stay between us, and conserve your strength. We will take the hidden route, not the crowned paths.
Caelan steps to the unclaimed door and places his shield arm against its seam. The frost-stiffened woman moves behind Lucidus, vellum held close to her chest.

Maereth
He knows the refuge’s stones better than I do. I will watch the mark and warn you if the Court’s summons changes.
The door opens inward at Caelan’s touch, revealing a descending passage veined with dim crimson light. Cold air rises from below, carrying ash and distant mineral heat.

Caelan
The way is open. Lucidus, follow at your pace. I will not leave you behind, and I will not command your steps.
Caelan enters first, shield angled toward the dark descent. The frost-stiffened woman follows close behind Lucidus as the unclaimed door remains open, granting them a clear route beneath the refuge.
“I will follow after him in silence to attempt to conceal my presence.”
FAILURE (Mediocre Stealth, rolled +0)

Lucidus follows Caelan into the crimson-lit descent, placing each claw carefully and keeping their breathing shallow. The frost-stiffened woman remains close behind, watching the fading mark.
For several steps, the concealment holds. Then Lucidus’s injured side tightens, and their silver-tufted tail brushes the passage wall with a faint scrape.

Maereth
There. The mark answered the sound. It is not loud enough to summon them, but it has shown our position within the descent.
Crimson light spills from Lucidus’s palm and runs across the floor, outlining a narrow side cleft hidden behind hanging mineral veins. The main descent pulses in response.

Caelan
We cannot keep to the open stair. The mark has made concealment unreliable, but it has revealed another way. I will check the cleft.

Maereth
It branches beneath the Ashen Vein and rejoins the old descent farther east. Narrow, perhaps, but the Court may read the main route before this one.
Caelan kneels at the cleft and angles his shield through the mineral curtain. Beyond, cold air moves steadily toward the mountain’s depths, offering a usable path away from the exposed stair.
“I state coldly "come on if we get out they'll leave the sanctuary alone afterall they're after me not the building." I am attempt to hurry the two.”
SUCCESS (Good Diplomacy, rolled +2)

Lucidus
Come on. If we get out, they will leave the sanctuary alone. After all, they are after me, not the building.
Lucidus’s cold urgency cuts through the cleft. They move into the narrow passage, marked palm lighting each foothold and their tail held clear of the mineral veins.

Caelan
Agreed. We leave the sanctuary behind us and draw the Court toward the mountain descent. Keep moving, and I will clear the way.
Caelan pushes through the hanging minerals and enters first, shield turned sideways to fit. The cleft accepts them, carrying their footsteps east beneath the exposed stair.

Maereth
Then hurry. The mark is already cooling, but the Court will notice that it has changed direction.
The frost-stiffened woman follows Lucidus into the cleft and draws the vellum close. Behind them, crimson light fades from the main descent, leaving the sanctuary’s hidden route unmarked.

Caelan
Lucidus is right about the sanctuary. If the Court follows the mark, they will find an empty refuge and our trail beneath it.

“I will keep following after him.”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

Lucidus follows Caelan through the mineral-veined cleft, shoulders scraping stone as their marked palm casts a dim crimson path beneath their claws.
The passage tightens, then opens into a concealed shelf above a deep ravine. Far below, red-lit channels wind east beneath the mountain.

Caelan
We are clear of the exposed stair. The cleft joins an older descent here, and the Court will have to choose between two trails.
Caelan crouches at the shelf’s edge, studying the branching routes. One descends toward the Ashen Vein; the other follows a colder draft through black stone.

Maereth
Take the cold route. It bypasses the Vein and reaches the eastern descent sooner, but the mountain wards there may recognize the marked heir.

Caelan
The mark brought us here, but it may also make every old ward watch us. I will let Lucidus choose the risk.
“"What are we waiting for lets keep moving." With that I keep moving following the mark.”
FAILURE (Good Agility, rolled -2)

Lucidus
What are we waiting for? Let’s keep moving.
Lucidus follows the crimson mark along the colder route, claws finding narrow footholds as the draft strengthens. The black stone soon narrows around them, forcing the group toward a pale arch ahead.
The mark flares as Lucidus crosses beneath the arch. Frost races across the passage, and the mountain wards seal the way forward with a translucent wall of blue-white stone.

Caelan
The ward recognized you, but it did not strike. It has barred the marked heir from the direct descent.
The frost-stiffened woman presses her vellum near the barrier without touching it. A thin red seam appears beneath the arch, descending toward a cramped side stair hidden behind black mineral spines.

Maereth
There is another way. The ward sealed the old route, but that seam leads beneath it. It will be slower, and too narrow for haste.

Caelan
We cannot force this passage without teaching the mountain to resist us. The lower stair is open, Lucidus. We can take it, or search for a way to appease the ward.
