The Sigil Beneath the Slopesanctuary infirmary
The Sigil Beneath the Slope

It is still midnight. Lucidus steps off the silver-marked path onto the steep edge above the sanctuary’s hidden approaches, studying the ward-lines below.

The lines remain intact, faint silver threads crossing the mountain stone without gaps. Then the loose ground shifts beneath Lucidus’s feet.

Stone gives way. Lucidus drops fifteen feet onto the lower slope, landing hard as scattered rocks clatter into the darkness. Their injured shoulder jolts sharply.

Dust settles around them. Above, the silver path hangs just beyond reach, while the sanctuary’s wards continue glowing steadily and no hostile presence crosses them.

Lucidus

Lucidus

The ward-lines are intact. I am below the path.

The lower slope angles toward a narrow shelf beneath the mountain. The family chamber lies beyond the upper route, unseen from this position, and no companion answers the fall.

Far above, one faint silver chime drifts from the terraces where Wisp wanders. Beneath Lucidus, a loosened stone rolls aside and reveals a dim blue sigil in the rock.

✓ Quest Accepted

Examine the awakened waystone

“I grip my arm losely before examining myself, using my knowledge of healing, to determine if my shoulder was the only thing injured.”

SUCCESS (Fair Healing, rolled +1)

The Sigil Beneath the Slope

Lucidus grips their injured arm loosely against their body, keeping the shoulder still while their healing knowledge traces the damage through pain, swelling, and restricted movement.

The shoulder joint is visibly displaced rather than merely strained. Their ribs carry spreading bruises from the impact, and one knee is scraped raw against the broken slope.

Lucidus

Lucidus

The shoulder is dislocated. My ribs are bruised, and my knee is scraped. Nothing else feels broken.

Lucidus checks their neck, spine, remaining arm, hands, hips, and ankles by touch and careful motion. Each answers with ordinary strength, leaving the injuries clearly limited to shoulder, ribs, and knee.

They settle their weight against the mountain shelf, protecting the displaced joint from further movement. The examination costs little strength, though every breath pulls sharply across the bruised ribs.

Below, the loosened stone finishes rolling aside. The dim blue sigil lies exposed in the rock, its ancient light steady beneath the intact silver ward-lines.

✓ Quest Accepted

Get off the lower slope

“I snarl at my own foolishness "FIgures I try to ensure the wards are holding around that damn stone! Instead I end up in this position! At least I didn't manage to break my neck at least." I will look up at the ledge with a frown.”

Lucidus

Lucidus

Figures I try to ensure the wards are holding around that damn stone! Instead I end up in this position! At least I didn't manage to break my neck.

Lucidus snarls at their own misfortune, then looks up toward the ledge with a deep frown. The silver ward-lines remain unbroken above, undisturbed by the fall.

Lucidus

Lucidus

The ward-lines are still holding.

The ledge hangs fifteen feet overhead, its broken edge silhouetted against the moonlit path. Loose stones rest around Lucidus, but the shelf beneath them remains firm.

Their dislocated shoulder stays braced against their body, while bruised ribs make each breath deliberate. Nothing shifts further, and the exposed blue sigil continues glowing below.

From the upper terraces, a faint silver chime drifts through the midnight air. Wisp continues its patrol, unaware of any danger beyond Lucidus’s isolated fall.

“I call out hoping someone will hear "Anyone there?!"”

Lucidus

Anyone there?!

Lucidus’s call rises along the mountain face, striking stone and silver ward-lines before echoing through the hidden approaches. The exposed blue sigil answers with a soft pulse.

Three silver chimes descend from the upper terraces, clear and deliberate. A small winged shape glides over the ledge, then settles where the moonlight catches its living-metal wings.

Wisp

Wisp

I hear you, Lucidus. I am above you, and I can see that your shoulder remains displaced. Do not attempt the climb.

Wisp folds its wings and sends a thread of silver light down the rock. It touches the shelf beside Lucidus, marking a safe landing point and carrying their voice toward the sanctuary.

Valkonias

Valkonias

I hear them as well. The fall has not breached the wards. Wisp, bring assistance without opening any passage to the outside.

Wisp

Wisp

Understood. I will summon Caelan and Maereth, then remain here until they arrive. The blue sigil is contained, and no hostile presence follows its light.

“I let out a groan knowing if Caelan got word then most likely my mother and father will be on their way to. "Great what a lovely time this is... I'm never going to hear the end of it."”

Lucidus

Lucidus

Great. What a lovely time this is... I'm never going to hear the end of it.

Lucidus lets out a pained groan from the lower shelf, keeping their injured shoulder braced while the blue sigil pulses quietly below. The wards remain undisturbed.

Wisp

Wisp

Caelan has received the summons. He is coming with Maereth, and I expect Mithria and Eltaor will follow once they learn you are hurt.

Valkonias

Valkonias

They may worry without compromising the sanctuary. Your fall is contained, heir, and no hostile force has crossed the wards.

Above the ledge, Wisp’s silver light steadies into a clear guide. Farther within the refuge, hurried footsteps begin to echo, approaching through the protected route.

Wisp

Wisp

I will keep the landing marked and prevent anyone from disturbing the sigil. You need only remain still until help reaches you.

Another set of footsteps joins the first, accompanied by Caelan’s familiar voice calling Lucidus’s name. The sanctuary’s wards hold firm as assistance makes its way down.

“I lay my head against the cliff wall grumbling but otherwise not moving as I listen out for them.”

Lucidus eases their head against the cold cliff wall, keeping the displaced shoulder tucked close. Their ribs protest, but the stone holds them steady.

They grumble under their breath and otherwise remain still, listening through the mountain’s quiet. Footsteps approach from above, careful and quick across the protected route.

Caelan

Caelan

Lucidus, we are here. Do not move until I reach you.

Caelan appears at the ledge with Maereth behind him, both framed by Wisp’s silver guide-light. Maereth lowers a rope while Caelan studies the shelf and the injured shoulder.

Maereth

Maereth

The sigil remains contained. Good. We will bring you up carefully, then set that shoulder properly.

Wisp

Wisp

Three silver chimes before I speak: the route is secure. No hostile presence has approached while you waited.

Caelan descends to the marked landing and kneels beside Lucidus without touching them. Above, Maereth anchors the rope as the sanctuary’s wards continue to shine intact.

“"Oh lovely prince charming finally came to rescue me," I quip at him while he ties the rope around me.”

Oh lovely prince charming finally came to rescue me.

Caelan secures the rope around Lucidus’s waist and checks the knot twice, keeping clear of the displaced shoulder. His expression remains solemn for precisely one breath.

Caelan

Caelan

I apologize for the delay, my illustrious captive. The mountain proved jealous of my arrival.

Maereth braces the rope above while Wisp’s silver guide-light marks each foothold. Caelan shifts his weight, giving Lucidus a firm, steady line upward.

Maereth

Maereth

Save the courtship for the infirmary. Caelan, lift on my count, and keep their shoulder still.

Caelan

Caelan

On three. Lucidus, do not help with that arm. Let the rope and my strength do the work.

Together, Caelan and Maereth haul Lucidus onto the ledge without jarring the injured joint. Wisp’s chimes sound as the blue sigil remains contained below.

Lucidus

Alright, get this rope off of me.

Caelan

Caelan

Of course. Hold still while I loosen it, and keep that shoulder tucked close.

Caelan unfastens the knot and draws the rope free without brushing Lucidus’s displaced shoulder. Maereth gathers the slack while Wisp keeps the blue sigil below in view.

Maereth

Maereth

There. You are no longer tied to the mountain. Now let us get you somewhere warm before setting the joint.

Caelan

Caelan

You can lean on me or take the path under your own strength. Either way, the sanctuary remains secure, and the sigil is contained.

Caelan

Caelan

Then we move. Lean as much as you need, and let me carry the pace.

Caelan supports Lucidus steadily up the ledge and toward the sanctuary’s inner route. Their scraped knee bears weight, while Maereth walks beside them with the rope gathered over one arm.

Maereth

Maereth

The infirmary first. We will set the shoulder, bind the ribs, and leave the blue sigil contained until you can think clearly.

Three silver chimes: the sigil remains quiet. I will keep watch below while you return to shelter.

The sanctuary’s silver flames brighten as Lucidus crosses back beneath the warded arch. Warmth gathers around them, and the safe path opens fully toward the infirmary.

“Reaching the infirmary I will sit down putting my good hand over my bruised ribs as I ask, looking at Caelan "so how much worry should I expect from my parents?"”

The infirmary receives Lucidus in a wash of warm amber light. They sit on the nearest padded stone bench, covering their bruised ribs with their good hand while Caelan remains beside them.

Lucidus

Lucidus

So how much worry should I expect from my parents?

Caelan

Caelan

A great deal, though Mithria will try to make it look like calm. Eltaor will ask practical questions while watching every breath you take.

Maereth kneels before Lucidus and examines the scraped knee first, then the displaced shoulder without forcing it to move. She sets folded linen, salve, and a shallow bowl of glowing water within reach.

Maereth

Maereth

They will worry because they love you, not because you have failed. Hold still. I will treat the knee and ribs before Caelan helps me set the shoulder.

Caelan

Caelan

If you want the honest measure, they will be frightened until they see you breathing comfortably. After that, they will become unbearable in entirely different ways.

Maereth cleans the knee and presses cool healing salve over the bruised ribs, easing each breath. Caelan keeps one hand ready near Lucidus’s uninjured side as footsteps hurry beyond the infirmary door.

My child, I am here. You need not look up until you are ready.

Mithria stops just inside the doorway rather than crowding the bench. Eltaor remains beside her, his staff grounded lightly against the stone.

Eltaor

Eltaor

The practical questions can wait. First, I need to know whether Maereth has you stable and whether Caelan needs anything.

Maereth

Maereth

They are stable. The knee and ribs are responding to treatment, and the shoulder is next. No one should move them until I give the word.

Caelan

Caelan

You heard her. Keep your head down if that makes this easier, Lucidus. We are not going anywhere.

The amber light steadies across the infirmary. Mithria takes the nearest seat without touching Lucidus, while Eltaor watches the doorway and Maereth prepares the glowing water.

“"I'm... I was foolish I got startled and paranoid due to the fact that I was told that blasted stone was active. I was afraid that the wards may be tampered with. I should have just asked Wisp but..." I fall silent not wanting to continue but it's clear what occured.”

Lucidus falls quiet, the unfinished confession resting between them. Their gaze stays lowered, and their good hand presses more firmly against their bruised ribs.

Mithria

Mithria

You were frightened because you believed the refuge might be threatened. That fear does not make you foolish, my child.

Eltaor

Eltaor

The concern was reasonable. The approach was dangerous, but the wards held. Next time, let someone stand beside you before you investigate.

Maereth

Maereth

We understand what happened. Now keep still. I am setting the shoulder, and this will require your full cooperation.

Maereth lifts the glowing bowl and moves behind Lucidus. Caelan braces their uninjured side while Mithria remains within sight, steady and silent.

Caelan

Caelan

You called for help when the mountain turned against you. Let us count that improvement, then get you mended before you patrol another ledge.

Keep breathing. Do not fight the movement. On my count, I set it, and then the worst is finished.

Maereth guides the joint into place. A sharp, contained jolt passes through Lucidus’s shoulder, but they do not flinch or pull away; the joint settles correctly beneath her hands.

Caelan

Caelan

Steady. You held through it. Maereth has it back where it belongs.

The cost arrives in a sudden tremor through Lucidus’s arm, followed by numbness in the fingers and a fresh ache beneath the bruised ribs. Maereth immediately binds the shoulder.

Maereth

Maereth

Successfully set, but the strain has left the arm numb. Keep it supported, and do not test its strength tonight.

Mithria

Mithria

You stayed still while they helped you. That was not foolishness, my child. That was trust placed carefully.

“I sit there silently for a long moment before saying "I got to in my head. I know I should care about others and I already know you're going to lecture me, mom. But I can't... no that's not it. I don't want to leave the sanctuary I have now to help others that are being chased by the court." I don't look at any of them just down at my hands. The confession remains undisturbed beneath the amber light. Mithria’s mouth tightens, but she does not reach for Lucidus; Eltaor lowers his gaze to the floor.

Mithria

Then we will not make you leave. Wanting to keep the home you fought for is not a betrayal of those still outside it.

Eltaor

I may wish the Court stopped, but I will not turn your sanctuary into an obligation. We can protect others through information, wards, and chosen allies.

Caelan

Caelan

I disagree with abandoning anyone, but I do not disagree with your boundary. We can find a path that does not place you at its center.

Maereth

Maereth

Good. Now the truth is usable. Rest here, and we will plan from the sanctuary outward, rather than dragging the sanctuary into danger.
