Warnings Beneath the Blue Light
Caelan
Caelan

The eastern stair widens into a quiet ice gallery. Blue mineral light reveals a dry ledge above the snow, while the sheltered passage fades behind them.

The passing hero makes camp at the ledge’s far edge without approaching Lucidus. He tends his own bruises, then places the map slab within easy reach.

Caelan

Caelan

Valkonias is older than the eastern kingdoms. The legends call them a guardian, but guardianship does not mean gentleness.

He checks the gallery entrance, shield beside his knee. Blue light glints across the map and Lucidus’s detached scale, which still points toward the heights.

Caelan

Caelan

There are stories of a sealed sanctuary beneath the mountain, built by those who served Valkonias. It may offer shelter, or merely another test.

Caelan

Caelan

I should also tell you this: I have not told you everything I saw beneath the watchtower. Some of it concerned your bloodline, and some concerned the hunters.

Caelan

Caelan

If the hidden chamber recognized Lucidus, the hunters may already know more than either of us.

✓ Quest Accepted

Reach the sanctuary beneath the mountain

“I stare at him for a long moment before speaking, my tone tired "Firstly before you continue what's your name? Secondly What did you find that warrents my bloodline besides my great grandfather?"”

Firstly, before you continue, what is your name? Secondly, what did you find that warrants this bloodline talk besides my great-grandfather?

Lucidus stares at him for a long moment before speaking. The tired demand settles between them, while blue light trembles across the map and detached scale.

Caelan

Caelan

My name is Caelan. And I will not answer the second question as though certainty makes it safer.

Caelan turns the map slab, keeping his shield within reach. His gaze remains on the scale rather than Lucidus, as if the visible proof troubles him.

Caelan

Caelan

The chamber showed a silver dragon joined to Valkonias by blood, then marked you beside them. I also saw the hunters' sign wrapped around that lineage.

Caelan

Caelan

That is all I will claim as fact. The rest was damaged script, but one surviving word named a sanctuary beneath these heights.

He taps the scale's pointed edge. Its silver light shifts from the heights toward a concealed seam in the gallery wall, revealing a narrow door without opening it.

“"Very well Caelan for now you have my trust though I'd like to reach that sanctuary before I decide to rest." I motion for him to get to his feet as I try to spot where the entrance should be.”

Lucidus

Very well, Caelan. For now, you have my trust. I want to reach that sanctuary before I decide to rest.

Lucidus motions for Caelan to rise, then turns toward the gallery wall. Their gaze follows the scale’s silver glow across the ice, stone, and concealed seam.

Caelan

Caelan

For now is more than I expected. I will not mistake it for surrender, and I will get you to that sanctuary.

Caelan stands, retrieves his shield, and steps beside the map without touching Lucidus. The scale brightens, its pointed edge tracing the narrow door’s outline.

Lucidus studies the wall and finds a shallow indentation beneath the seam, shaped like a clawed hand. Silver light gathers within it, revealing the sanctuary entrance completely.

Caelan

Caelan

There. The door has a bloodline seal, but it is not barred. Your scale has shown us the entrance without forcing it open.

The concealed door stands clear in the blue-lit ice gallery, its ancient threshold leading into darkness beneath the eastern heights. Cold air flows outward, carrying the scent of deep stone.

“I will walk into it and take in my surroundings keeping alert for any off sounds.”

FAILURE (Fair Perception, rolled -1)

Warnings Beneath the Blue Light

Lucidus crosses the threshold into the sanctuary, claws testing dark stone while their gaze sweeps the vaulted entry. Cold air curls around their horns, carrying no obvious movement.

Lucidus

Lucidus

The silence is too complete for an abandoned place.

Behind them, the bloodline seal flares. The door closes with a heavy stoneward thud, cutting off the gallery and leaving Caelan outside the sanctuary.

Caelan

Caelan

Lucidus! I am here. Do not force the door. Ancient seals punish haste.

A faint scraping answers from somewhere below, followed by three slow knocks beneath the floor. The sound stops, but the entry stones begin separating along a crescent seam.

The seam opens into a narrow descending stair lit by dim silver veins. Beyond it, a side arch stands ajar, marked with the same sanctuary sigil as the scale.

Lucidus has not reached the sanctuary proper, and the sealed threshold offers no easy return. The newly opened stair provides a clear way deeper, while Caelan remains separated behind the door.

✓ Quest Accepted

Bring Caelan into the sanctuary

“I want to study the door to determine if there's a price I must pay to open it for an outsider.”

SUCCESS (Fair Arcane Lore, rolled +1)

Warnings Beneath the Blue Light

Lucidus examines the sealed threshold instead of descending. Their claws trace the sanctuary sigil, the stone seams, and the shallow claw-shaped indentation beneath the door.

Lucidus

Lucidus

The seal is measuring what crosses it, not merely who opens it.

Silver veins brighten beneath their touch, revealing fine script hidden in the dark stone. The markings form two linked figures, then a single binding line between them.

Caelan

Caelan

What do you see, Lucidus? If the door demands a sacrifice, do not pay it before I know the terms.

The script resolves beneath Lucidus’s scrutiny: the blood-marked heir may enter freely, but an outsider requires a declared bond and a shared mark willingly given.

The price is not blood or life. Lucidus must name Caelan as a guest under their protection, and Caelan must touch the seal in acceptance. The door opens only for that consent.

Caelan

Caelan

Then that is the price. I accept your protection as a guest, if you choose to name it. I will not claim more than you offer.

“I will rest my hand on the door as I reply with "Then from this moment I will keep you under my command. As a soul bound to me as a guard and ally." It's the best I can manage afterall dragons even hybrids are a proud lot.”

Lucidus

Then from this moment I will keep you under my command. As a soul bound to me as a guard and ally.

Lucidus rests their hand against the sanctuary door. Silver veins surge beneath their claws, carrying the declaration into the linked figures carved in the stone.

The seal rejects the wording with a violent shudder. The binding line between the figures splits, and black frost clamps around Lucidus’s wrist without breaking their skin.

Beyond the threshold, the sanctuary’s silver veins flare crimson. The door no longer recognizes Caelan as a possible guest, while the claw-shaped indentation seals around Lucidus’s hand.

Caelan

Caelan

Lucidus, that was not consent. You named ownership, and the sanctuary heard coercion. Withdraw your hand before the seal fixes the mistake.

The mark on the door twists their declaration into a binding claim. A thin silver line runs from Lucidus’s trapped hand toward the closed threshold, tightening whenever they pull.

Caelan

Caelan

I will guard you by choice, not as a soul chained beneath your command. Change the terms, or this place will bind us both wrongly.

“I grit my teeth as I call out "Alright fine I see you as an equal alright! I'm sorry!" This time I really do mean it as I continue "You're the first one to even step in to help me. I..." I sigh tiredly and in pain as I finish feeling small "I need you and your help as an ally."”

Lucidus

Lucidus

All right, fine. I see you as an equal. I am sorry. You are the first one to step in and help me. I... need you and your help as an ally.

Lucidus grits their teeth through the pain, keeping their hand against the seal. The black frost shudders, then loosens as their words pass into the stone.

The binding line no longer twists toward command, but it does not join the carved figures. Instead, silver script opens beneath Lucidus’s palm, revealing a third symbol between them.

Caelan

Caelan

That was heard. The sanctuary recognizes equality, but an ally is not named by one voice alone. It requires a vow freely answered.

The seal releases Lucidus’s wrist, leaving only a cold red imprint. The door remains shut, yet a narrow silver crack appears beside the threshold, showing a second inscription beyond.

Caelan

Caelan

There is another way through. We can speak the bond together, neither commanding nor submitting. If you choose it, the sanctuary will judge the answer.

Caelan

Caelan

They asked for an ally while hurting and afraid. I will not turn that need into another chain.

“I stare at the door for a long moment waiting for Caelan to either accept or decline.”

Caelan

Lucidus stares at the sealed door, hand still resting against its cold stone. The red imprint fades slowly while the silver crack waits beside the threshold.

Beyond the door, Caelan remains silent for several breaths. Then his shadow shifts beneath the narrow gap, and he places his hand against the other side.

Caelan

Caelan

I accept you as an equal, Lucidus. I will stand beside you as your ally, and guard you by my own choice.

The sanctuary answers without violence. Silver light joins beneath their hands, drawing a complete line between the two carved figures and the third symbol.

Caelan

Caelan

No chain binds this. If either of us withdraws the vow, the bond ends. That is the only protection I will offer or accept.

The door unlocks with a deep internal chime. Stone withdraws into the wall, revealing Caelan beyond the threshold and a vast silver-lit passage descending behind him.

Cold air flows from the sanctuary proper, carrying the scent of ancient dust and distant snow. The completed seal dims, leaving the chosen bond quietly recorded in silver.
