The Ward’s True Safeguard
the ancient ward
the ancient ward

The sealed archive chamber opens its memory across the silver basin. Lucidus, Caelan, and Maereth stand together before the bronze doors, the ward-mark shining over Lucidus’s scales.

The vision shows the first hunters laying down their weapons and speaking promises of shelter. Beneath their false welcome, one carries a stolen blood-sign taken from a frightened guardian.

Maereth

Maereth

They did not overcome the ward. They convinced it that surrender was protection, then used the blood-sign to redefine whom it must shelter.

Caelan

Caelan

Then the safeguard was consent, twisted through deception. The ward needs a freely offered purpose, not merely a familiar mark.

Above, the family hall brightens. A young adult elf woman with copper braids and a travel-stained green cloak enters beside an elderly elf man with silver hair, a carved walking staff, and snow-white brows.

Sera

Sera

The flames led us here. Please, is this Valkonias’s refuge? We were told our kin would be safe.

The archive’s memory settles on one final image: the ward opening only after the guardian names whom they protect and why. From above, the newcomers’ uncertain voices carry down the stair.

“I say "Maereth, Caelan you two go up and care for the arrivals. I have one other thing to do here."”

Lucidus

Lucidus

Maereth, Caelan, you two go up and care for the arrivals. I have one other thing to do here.

Caelan nods and turns toward the stair. Maereth closes the archive’s bronze doors halfway, leaving the silver basin visible while the newcomers’ voices grow clearer above.

Caelan

Caelan

We will welcome them and keep the hall secure. Call if the ward reveals anything dangerous.

Maereth

Maereth

I will explain the refuge’s rules before fear makes them careless. Whatever you seek here, Lucidus, do not mistake silence for safety.

Caelan and Maereth ascend together, their footsteps fading toward the family hall. The young elf woman’s worried voice answers them, followed by Caelan’s steady reassurance.

Lucidus remains before the silver basin and the sealed inner archive. The ward-mark over their scales brightens, and the last memory of the stolen blood-sign hangs clear in the quiet chamber.

Valkonias

Valkonias

You have privacy, heir. Ask the ward what remains hidden, or examine the archive’s deeper seal. I will hear your purpose, but I will not choose it for you.

“I hold out my hand to the ward and ask "If I offer you a chance to leave that basin would you take it?"”

Lucidus

Lucidus

If I offer you a chance to leave that basin, would you take it?

Lucidus holds out their hand over the silver basin. The ward-mark answers, and the flame rises from the stone without resistance, gathering around their palm.

Silver fire threads across Lucidus’s scales, then pours outward into the bronze shields and carved walls. The conscious ward leaves the basin, its presence now spread through the entire archive chamber.

The basin goes dark, but the chamber brightens. The ward’s new shape settles around Lucidus like a protective mantle, no longer anchored to one vessel or vulnerable to a stolen sign.

Valkonias

Valkonias

It accepted your offer. You have freed its awareness from the basin without taking command of it.

A hidden seam opens in the bronze doors, revealing shelves of sealed records and a narrow arch leading toward the family hall. Above, the newcomers’ voices remain calm.

Valkonias

Valkonias

Now it may guard by choice, hear every approach, and judge deception throughout the refuge. Your protection has gained a willing sentinel.

“I say, as I look at the silver fire "Wisp, I think I'll call you Wisp."”

Lucidus

Wisp, I think I’ll call you Wisp.

The silver fire gathers around Lucidus’s hand and answers with a soft chime through the bronze chamber. The name settles into the ward’s living pattern, and every flame in the refuge briefly turns silver.

Wisp

Wisp

Wisp is accepted. I will guard by that name, and I will remember the purpose you gave me.

The ward’s mantle tightens across Lucidus’s scales, strengthening the refuge’s protections. In exchange, cold sinks into their palm and leaves the fingers stiff, their magic briefly muted there.

Valkonias

Valkonias

A name freely offered can become an anchor without becoming a chain. Wisp now knows you as its first chosen ally.

Beyond the narrow arch, footsteps sound from the family hall. Wisp spreads through the bronze walls, listening to the newcomers while the sealed records remain undisturbed.

Wisp

Wisp

The arrivals are frightened, but no deception follows them. I will watch the doors, the blood-signs, and every promise spoken beneath this roof.

“I say, as I look around "I'll figure out some way to give you a full way to move freely. But for now you'll have to remain either here or with me."”

I’ll figure out some way to give you a full way to move freely. But for now, you’ll have to remain either here or with me.

Lucidus looks around the bronze archive, taking in the living walls, sealed records, and silver fire now threaded through every protective carving.

Wisp

Wisp

I accept these boundaries. Here, I can guard the refuge without distance; with you, I can protect the purpose that gave me a name.

The silver mantle loosens around Lucidus’s hand, and a thin stream of light reaches toward the narrow arch, testing the limits of Wisp’s presence without leaving the sanctuary.

Valkonias

Valkonias

A ward may learn new shapes when its purpose remains freely chosen. If you seek a body or vessel for Wisp, I will help you search the old records.

Wisp

Wisp

For now, this chamber and Lucidus are enough. I will remain where I can hear the refuge breathe.

Beyond the arch, frightened voices settle into cautious conversation as Caelan and Maereth welcome the arrivals. Wisp’s silver light follows the sound, guarding every threshold without crossing it.

Lucidus turns from the archive and climbs the narrow stairs toward the family hall. Silver fire travels through the walls beside them, keeping pace without leaving the sanctuary.

Wisp

Wisp

Your word is recorded, Lucidus. Go greet the dragons. I will remain here and guard every threshold until you return.

At the upper landing, Caelan stands beside the young elf woman and elderly elf man, while Maereth offers them warm cups. Both newcomers turn as Lucidus enters.

Sera

Sera

You must be Lucidus. The family flames carried your name to us. We are grateful to have reached this refuge.

Orlan

Orlan

I am Orlan, and this is Sera. We came as quickly as the hidden road allowed. If Valkonias shelters our kin, we will honor these walls.

The family flames brighten around the hall, answering their arrival. Caelan steps aside to make room, and Maereth watches the newcomers with guarded relief as the sanctuary settles around them.

“I give a polite bow as I speak "I am glad you arrived safely. I take it you met Valkonias when you first arrived?"”

Lucidus offers Sera and Orlan a polite bow beneath the family hall’s pale flames. The silver ward-mark on their palm tightens, leaving their fingers colder and briefly numb.

Lucidus

Lucidus

I am glad you arrived safely. I take it you met Valkonias when you first arrived?

Sera

Sera

We did. He received us at the lower arch, and his presence made the hidden road feel less like a flight and more like a welcome.

Orlan

Orlan

He spoke with us briefly before sending us onward. He named the refuge safe, but warned that safety here depends on honesty and freely chosen bonds.

Sera lowers her cup, studying Lucidus with open relief. Orlan rests both hands atop his carved staff as the family flames brighten around their three names.

Sera

Sera

He told us you opened this sanctuary for those still hunted. We came because of your protection, Lucidus, and we will not treat it lightly.

“I rub the back of my neck as I say "I um... didn't really do anything. It opened for me because of my blood. Though it was really Caelan here that we got as far as we did." You won't admit that a lot of the reason was because you couldn't read.”

Lucidus rubs the back of their neck, silver ward-light glinting across their chilled fingers. Their admission hangs plainly beneath the family hall’s pale flames.

Sera

Sera

Blood may have opened the sanctuary, but you chose to use that gift for others. Caelan’s help makes this refuge a shared victory.

Orlan

Orlan

Then we owe thanks to both of you. An heir opened the door, and an ally helped carry hope through every danger beyond it.

Caelan

Caelan

I guided where I could, but Lucidus kept choosing the road forward. I only made certain they did not have to face it alone.

Sera inclines her head toward Caelan, while Orlan taps his staff once against the stone in solemn agreement. The surrounding flames brighten around both names.

Sera

Sera

Then let us begin properly. Tell us where the newcomers should rest, and we will help prepare this refuge before more of our kin arrive.

“I got to speak when Maereth steps in to lead them to their room as I sense a familiar change in the atmosphere one that only accured when my mother was around, due to her being a silver dragon.”

Maereth steps forward and gestures toward the adjoining chambers, guiding Sera and Orlan beneath the pale family flames. Caelan gathers their cups and follows to help settle them.

As the newcomers pass, the atmosphere changes. The warmth thins into a crisp silver coolness, and a clean mineral scent threads through the refuge, unmistakable to Lucidus.

Lucidus

Lucidus

This is the air that gathered around my mother.

The family flames turn silver at their edges, bending toward the upper arch. Wisp’s light answers through the walls, confirming the presence rather than mistaking it for a ward-memory.

Maereth

Maereth

Sera, Orlan, your rooms are ready. Keep close to the marked path, and do not open any door bearing a black circle.

Caelan

Caelan

Maereth, wait. Lucidus has sensed something. The air has changed.

Maereth stops with one hand on the chamber door. Above the hall, a distant silver flame blooms bright enough to cast the shape of swept wings across the stone.

“I will run towards the feeling as fast as I can while attempt to dodge anything that might be in my way.”

Lucidus launches toward the upper arch, claws striking the silver-lit floor. They twist around benches, hanging chains, and startled family members without slowing.

A loose stone catches beneath their foot. Lucidus slams one shoulder against the wall, scraping scales and sending a sharp crack through the refuge, but they keep their balance.

Caelan

Caelan

Clear the passage! Let Lucidus through!

Sera pulls Orlan aside as Caelan catches a falling clay cup. Maereth reaches toward the arch, but the silver flame parts before Lucidus and reveals a descending bridge.

Lucidus runs across the bridge and reaches the source of the feeling: a tall silver-lit figure waiting beyond the upper threshold, wrapped in crisp mountain air and the unmistakable presence of Mithria’s blood, revealing Mithria as a young adult dragon-hybrid woman with a visible angular face, long silver hair, pale skin, swept-back horns, and a fitted dark-blue coat.

Maereth

Maereth

The ward did not summon this presence. It came through the family road, and it knows exactly whom it seeks.

Behind Lucidus, the refuge settles from their passage. Their shoulder burns where the wall scraped it, and the noisy impact has alerted every guardian in the sanctuary.

My child. You are here. You are alive.

Mithria holds Lucidus tightly, one hand cradling the back of their black hair while the other rests between their scaled shoulders. Her silver hair spills around both of them like a veil.

Mithria

I followed Valkonias’s warning through three hidden roads. The Court cannot follow us. Your sanctuary sealed every path behind me.

The upper arch closes in a ring of silver flame, and Wisp’s ward-mark answers from Lucidus’s palm. Across the refuge, the family flames brighten, confirming Mithria’s arrival and sealing her road.

Maereth

Maereth

Then the first promised arrival has come safely. Let the hall witness this reunion, and let every remaining blood-sign know the road is real.
