The ruined watchtower rises from the road in broken black stone. Four monster hunters burst from the scrub, surrounding Lucidus and a passing hero with drawn blades and warded chains.
The hero is a broad-shouldered young adult elf man in a weather-stained green cloak, silver hair braided at one temple, and a battered shield held defensively.

the lead hunter
Dragon hybrid, you are the prize. Take them alive. The hero is not to leave the circle.
Rather than close around Lucidus, the hunters angle their chains across the hero's paths. Runes flare along the links, and the tower answers with a deep subterranean shudder.

Caelan
Their formation is wrong. They are guarding me from you, not guarding you from me.
Dust spills from the tower's cracked crown. Beneath the road, something vast groans against the hunters' ritual, while blue-white sigils crawl toward both prisoners.

Hold the pattern! If the seal breaks, neither the wyrmkin nor the vessel survives.

“I look at the situation before letting out a booming voice "Why won't you all leave me alone!" In a pure rage at the idea of being captured once again the atmosphere grows dense as I take in a deep breath before letting it out in the direction of the hunters. The ground turns into icy spikes as the air turns subzero around three of the four hunters.”
SUCCESS (Good Magic, rolled +1)

Lucidus
Why won't you all leave me alone!
Lucidus's voice rolls across the broken road like thunder. The air thickens around their horns and scales as they draw in a deep, freezing breath.
Their exhalation sweeps toward the hunters. Frost races over the stones, and jagged ice spikes thrust upward beneath three of them as the air plunges to killing cold.

the lead hunter
Break formation! Break it now!
The three hunters, three adult human men in dark leather hunting coats, sturdy boots, and iron-studded gloves, stagger within a sudden white haze, their warded chains stiffening as rime seals their runes. The fourth hunter, an adult human woman with a lean build, cropped brown hair, and a gray hooded cloak, throws up a cloak and retreats from the blast.

Caelan
That was no warning breath. Move, wyrmkin, before the tower answers with something worse.
The subterranean groan becomes a cracking roar. Blue-white sigils fracture across the road, and the tower's foundation splits beneath the disrupted ritual.
“I will grab the hero by the back of his cloak and wrench him free of the ritual circle while they're distracted. I snarl at him as I do so "Shut it before I just leave you here in their hands!"”
FAILURE (Great Strength, rolled -3)

Lucidus
Shut it before I just leave you here in their hands!
Lucidus lunges through the white haze, seizes the hero's cloak at the back, and wrenches hard toward the broken edge of the circle.
The cloak tears loose from one shoulder, but a blue-white sigil catches beneath the hero's boots. The ritual yanks him short, and the fabric twists around Lucidus's grip.

Caelan
The circle has hold of me! Do not pull against the binding, wyrmkin!
The failed wrench drags the hero sideways rather than free, splitting the cracked sigils into a jagged line between them. Frosted chains whip across the stones.

the lead hunter
Keep them separated! The vessel is still anchored. Finish the seal before the foundation gives way!
The hero's cloak hangs half-torn from Lucidus's grasp, while his trapped boots remain inside the circle. The widening fracture leaves one narrow, unstable gap between the ritual marks.
“"Damn it I guess there's only one way to break it," I grumble as I turn my attention to the hunters. I stare at them trying to determine which of them are keeping the ritual active.”
FAILURE (Fair Arcane Lore, rolled +0)

Lucidus
Damn it, I guess there’s only one way to break it.
Lucidus turns their stare upon the hunters. Frost, dust, and fractured blue light veil their hands, chains, and runes as the ritual bucks beneath the road.

Lucidus
The sigils are feeding through the hunters, but the source is hidden.
The effort fails to distinguish the active casters. Instead, the glare strips away the pattern’s surface: every chain is a conduit, while a buried line leads from the circle toward the tower foundation.

the lead hunter
Do not let the wyrmkin read the binding! Hold the lines!
His command makes the hunters wrench their chains inward, briefly exposing the narrow gap and the cracked sigil-line running beneath the hero’s trapped boots.

Caelan
There! The foundation carries the seal. Break that line, and their formation may matter no longer.
“I will strike at the sigil-line with my tail using my draconic nature and magic in attempts to shatter it; despite the soreness from striking it and possible backlash if I were to fail. I snarl out "Will you shut up and let me focus!"”
SUCCESS (Good Magic, rolled +1)

Lucidus
Will you shut up and let me focus!
Lucidus coils their silver-scaled tail through the narrow gap, black-furred tuft snapping aside as magic gathers along every scale. The exposed sigil-line flares beneath the hero's boots.
They strike. Tail, frost, and draconic force crash into the buried line, and the blue-white mark fractures with a sound like a bell breaking underwater.
The backlash races up Lucidus's tail and leaves the muscles near its base painfully cramped. The cost does not soften the blow: the sigil-line shatters completely.

Caelan
The binding is broken! Hold fast, wyrmkin!
The circle collapses inward. The hero's trapped boots tear free as dead runes gutter across the road, while every hunter's chain drops slack and clatters against the frost.

“I will shove the hero forward as the foundation is waking attempting to get him out of range despite possibly getting caught in the fallout. "Move, damn it!"”
SUCCESS (Great Strength, rolled +0)

Lucidus
Move, damn it!
Lucidus drives both hands into the hero's back and shoves with all their strength. The elf stumbles clear of the broken circle, sliding beyond the foundation's fractured reach as his torn cloak snaps free.

Caelan
You should have moved with me!
The tower foundation erupts behind them. Black stones heave upward, and a column of blue-white force tears through the road where the hero stood moments before.
The recoil catches Lucidus across the legs and throws them hard onto the frost. Pain locks their cramped tail-base muscles, while dust and shattered stone rain around their horns.

the lead hunter
The wyrmkin broke the anchor! Take them before the tower buries us all!

Caelan
Lucidus, up! The hunters are coming, and that ruin is not finished waking!
“I will stand up gripping my side in pain as I will try my best to follow behind the hero. My body aches from being practically slammed into the ground. My only hope now is to avoid the thing as it fully awakens which will be hard to do to it being a building.”
FAILURE (Good Agility, rolled +0)

Lucidus plants both hands against the frost and forces their aching body upright, one arm clamped around their side. Their tail drags stiffly behind them.
They stagger after the elf, but the road bucks beneath their feet. A fresh fracture races between them, and Lucidus drops to one knee as the tower groans.

Caelan
Not the road! Use the tower's shadow. The stones are still standing there.
The hero reaches a leaning buttress and slips behind it. Lucidus tries to follow, but a slab shears loose ahead, forcing them sideways into the open.
Blue-white force surges through the foundation. Lucidus braces against a broken marker stone instead of advancing, while the tower's awakening mass shifts above them.

Lucidus
The standing stones are quieter than the broken road.
Beyond the marker, a narrow passage appears beneath the leaning buttress, shielded from the worst tremors. It offers cover, but the collapsing gap leaves the hero briefly out of reach.
“I will attempt to keep up with the hero despite my height and aching body.”
FAILURE (Good Agility, rolled -3)

Lucidus pushes away from the marker stone and lurches toward the passage, forcing their aching legs to match the elf's retreat. Their stiff tail scrapes sparks from the frost.
The leaning buttress shudders as Lucidus reaches its shadow. A slab drops between them and the passing hero, striking the road and sealing the narrow opening with broken stone.

Caelan
Lucidus! Do not climb over it. The whole buttress is ready to fall.
Lucidus catches themself against the fallen slab, claws scraping for purchase. The impact twists their side and sends another cramp through the base of their tail.
The failed pursuit leaves them separated, but the slab's collapse exposes a dark stair descending beneath the buttress. Cold blue light pulses far below, steadier than the ruined road.

Caelan
There is a way under here. I will circle around. If that stair leads into the old watchtower, it may outlast the foundation.
“I can't follow not im my state and escaping isn't really going to be an option either. "I swear if this is some elaberate plan I will kill you the first chance I get," I bite out in my aggrivated pained state before slinking into the stairwell.”
FAILURE (Mediocre Stealth, rolled +0)

Lucidus
I swear, if this is some elaborate plan, I will kill you the first chance I get.
Lucidus bites the threat out through clenched fangs, then slinks into the stairwell. Their stiff tail drags over the first steps, each movement wrenching their injured side.

Caelan
Believe me, wyrmkin, I have no interest in being killed by someone I am trying to save.
The stair answers with a deep crack. Several steps collapse beneath Lucidus, and the shifting stone pitches them onto a narrow landing below instead of allowing a clean descent.
Dust clouds the blue glow. Ahead, an iron-bound door stands half open, marked with the same fractured sigils that once anchored the hunters' ritual. A colder draft slips through its gap.

Caelan
The stair is failing! Take the marked door, Lucidus. I will find another way down before the ruin buries us both.
Above, the fallen stones settle into a jagged barrier between them. Below, the half-open door waits in the blue light, its broken sigils pulsing like a weakened lock.
✓ Quest Accepted
Escape the collapsing stairwell
“I will attempt to shatter the lock knowing it will my last ditch effort either I succeed and get free or the ceiling will collapse on me.”
SUCCESS (Great Strength, rolled +3)

Lucidus plants their claws against the fractured lock. Magic surges through their arms, answering the sigils with a cold, violent pressure as the stairwell shudders overhead.
They strike the iron-bound door. Frost bursts across the metal, then the lock shatters inward with a thunderclap that ripples through the buried tower.
The door flies open onto a vast underground chamber. Dust pours from the ceiling, but the stone arch remains standing, and the collapsing stair seals behind Lucidus instead of crushing them.

Lucidus
The chamber is intact, and the sigils here are dormant.
Blue light gathers along the chamber walls, revealing an ancient map carved into black stone. A hidden passage branches beneath the tower and extends toward distant mountains.

Caelan
Lucidus! I heard that break. Are you alive? Answer me, and I will find a way through.
Beyond the opened door, a second smaller seal ignites beside the map, not as a barrier but as a dormant beacon bearing the hunters' broken mark.
