The culvert swallows them in cold concrete and stale water smell. The Scavenger keeps the lantern low, its flame stuttering over the tunnel walls. Blue's Force Stone hammer drags at his arm like a dead weight with teeth.

The Scavenger
Half a mile, maybe less. Keep quiet, stay close.
Yellow shifts beside the feverish Child, steadying her with one broad hand. Red walks tight to Blue's flank, watching the dark ahead like it owes her money.

The Child
Cold... but not as bad as outside.
Blue's arm jerks under the hammer's pull. A blue shimmer crawls over the stone head, then fades. Fine dust flakes from the shaft onto the floor.

Red the Colossus
Your weapon is chewing on you again. Can you still carry it?
Ahead, the tunnel bends toward a faint rectangle of dawn light. Beyond it waits the settlement route, and with it, the first real chance to hand the Child back to her people before the Force Stone takes more from Blue.
“I gently reach out and cradle the child with my free hand, hokding her close so my body's heat can keep her from getting too cold”
SUCCESS (Legendary Health, rolled -3)

Blue lowers his free hand and draws the Child in against his side. His big forearm becomes a wall between her and the tunnel chill, and his own heat starts to bleed through her thin layers.

The Child
Warm... thank you.
The lantern light wobbles across Blue's knuckles as his hammer arm trembles, the Force Stone pull dragging at him. Dust sifts from the shaft and taps the wet floor.

Yellow the Colossus
Good. Keep her close like that.

Red the Colossus
And watch that hammer. I do not trust the way it bites.

The Scavenger
We're almost through the culvert. Settlement's on the other side, with walls and real beds, if the path stays clear.
The Child leans into Blue's arm instead of shivering away, and the small relief in her body is immediate. Ahead, the pale exit brightens the tunnel bend, waiting for the next few careful steps.
“I keep the child close and push on”
SUCCESS (Legendary Health, rolled +3)

Blue keeps the child tucked tight and moves with the others through the culvert bend. His hammer arm still trembles, but his body takes the strain and carries her anyway.
The tunnel narrows, then opens. The exit glow spills across broken concrete, and the hidden path drops into a shallow service trench lined with old drain grates.

The Scavenger
There. That cut goes straight under the outer wall.

Yellow the Colossus
Good. Keep moving, all of you.

Red the Colossus
He knows this route too well.
Blue’s shoulder armor gives a faint shudder from the earlier shockwave, dust still clinging in the seams. Ahead, a rusted maintenance hatch hangs open, showing the first hint of settlement light beyond the culvert.
“Are we at the settlement yet?”
YES (Unlikely, rolled 14)

Blue pauses at the threshold, his gaze shifting from the dark culvert to the sprawling, flickering lights of a settlement visible through the hatch. The scavenger's promise holds true, and the path ahead is clear.

Blue the Colossus
The lights are real. We made it.
“I hand the child to the scavenger, reminding him of his promise to get her help once inside”
FAILURE (Great Negotiation, rolled -3)

Blue eases the child into the scavenger’s arms, careful of her fever-warm weight. The hatch behind them spills settlement light across the wet culvert floor.

Blue the Colossus
You promised help once we got inside. Keep that promise.

The Scavenger
I meant it. I’ve got her.
He takes her, then hesitates as if the weight matters more than he expected. Yellow watches his grip. Red does not lower her guard.

The Scavenger
He keeps his voice low, almost reverent. "Just get me through the hatch, and I’ll see her to someone who knows this place."

Yellow the Colossus
Then move. She needs warmth and clean hands, not a speech.
The child sags against the scavenger’s chest, but she stays protected. Beyond the open hatch, the settlement lights pulse like a second dawn, close enough now to tempt, far enough to judge them.
