The vault breathes cold over Patch’s knuckles, and Kaelith catches her before she steps through the gap. He lifts a hand, pointing at the thin mist that curls onto her skin like frost.

Kaelith

Kaelith

Easy. It is touching you now.

Patch stands in the narrow glow of the grotto, sword in hand, the ancient stone damp around her boots. The black mist clings faintly to her wrist, not quite smoke, not quite ice.

Kaelith

Kaelith

I do not like it, but I think it knows you are carrying it for a reason.

He studies her with wary respect, then lets out a slow breath, the kind that follows a fight that never quite happened. Dust drifts between them in the silence.

Kaelith

Kaelith

You scraped the runes apart, and it still came to you. That takes nerve, Patch. More than most would have.

The tunnel ahead waits in stillness, cold and dark, but not urgent. Kaelith lowers his hand and glances back at the open passage, then to Patch, as if giving her space to choose the next word.

✓ Quest Accepted

Find a way out of the buried grotto

I hold the blade out to see if the mist reacts to the tunnel ahead.

Patch lifts the blade toward the tunnel mouth. The mist on its edge stirs at once, then stretches forward like a searching finger, tasting the cold draft beyond the slab.

Patch

Patch

It is pulling that way.

The sword answers with a low, hungry shiver, and the stone walls seem to lean in. A crack of icy vapor crawls over Patch’s palm, right where the old burn aches.

Kaelith

Kaelith

That is not just a path. It is leading you.

He watches the blade, then Patch, his hand half-raised as if to stop her, but he does not. The mist tightens toward the dark ahead, and a fine strip of frost whitens the lip of the passage.

Kaelith

Kaelith

If it asks a price, I need to know whether you mean to pay it alone.

The sword’s pull settles into certainty, showing the way deeper, while cold dust spills over Patch’s fingers. Kaelith waits for her answer, his eyes fixed on her grip.

Is the blade leading us to an exit?

NO (Likely, rolled 86)

The mist recoils from the tunnel, curling back against the blade as if repelled by a dead end. The path ahead offers no way out, only a deeper descent into the mountain's hollow heart.

I follow the tunnel deeper

Patch slips into the dark opening, light from the grotto falling off her shoulders as the tunnel swallows her outline. Cold air brushes her face, and the stone underfoot narrows into a careful, sloping path.

The walls seem to lean close, slick with ancient damp, the frost at the threshold breaking into wet, black seams behind her.

Kaelith

Kaelith

She goes in without hesitation. Good. But the vault is still warning us.

Patch keeps moving, the burn in her palm throbbing once against the sword hilt as the blade settles quiet in her grip.

Kaelith

Kaelith

I am right behind you, Patch. If this path leads to a trap, we face it together.

The tunnel bends ahead, and the first breath of a deeper chamber touches them both, colder than the grotto had been.

I keep following the tunnel deeper

Patch keeps on, boots finding purchase on the slanted stone as the tunnel widens by a handspan. The cold ahead firms into a steady pull, not a warning, and the sword in her grip gives a faint, guiding hum.

The walls beside her feel alive with old pressure, wet moss giving way to carved stone hidden under grime. A thin seam of pale light leaks from somewhere farther down, tracing a crooked line across the floor.

Patch

Patch

There is another opening ahead.

Patch follows the seam, and the passage drops her into a lower pocket of air. The frost there has not melted, it clings to a half-buried arch cut into the rock, its surface marked with the same cradle-sign as the wall above.

Kaelith

Kaelith

Well. That is not a dead end.

Kaelith comes up beside her, and the chill catches on his breath as he studies the arch. The blade quiets, then tilts toward the opening, as if it knows the way through.

Kaelith

Kaelith

It is pointing us somewhere. Patch, do you trust it enough to go on?

I head toward the marked arch

SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +0)

Patch heads for the arch without hesitating, and the sword answers with a thin, eager tremor. Frost crunches under her boots as she crosses the chamber, the marked stone looming larger with every step.

The half-buried opening gives under the pressure of her approach, not opening wide, but enough for a cold draft to spill out and lick at her face. The arch’s cradle-sign catches the sword’s mist and turns it pale.

Patch

Patch

I’m going through.

Kaelith

Kaelith

Then I’m with you. Just keep that blade pointed where it belongs.

Patch reaches the arch and pauses there, the burn in her palm throb-ling once under the hilt. The stone around the opening feels tense, almost watchful, as if it remembers being sealed.

Kaelith

Kaelith

He studies her hand, then the sword, and his jaw tightens with caution that is trying very hard to become trust.

Beyond the arch, the passage bends into darkness, but the way is open. Kaelith waits at her shoulder for her next move.

I step through the arch

SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled -1)

Kaelith

Patch steps through the arch in one smooth motion. The frostlight washes over her boots, then the rest of her as the chamber falls behind her shoulder.

The sword’s mist brushes the marked stone, and the opening answers with a low groan. The arch settles wider, as if it has decided she belongs on this side.

Cold air spills around her and carries the scent of old stone and buried water. The burn in her palm pulses once beneath the hilt, sharp and hot against the chill.

Kaelith

Kaelith

You’re in. Good. Now tell me if that thing just led us somewhere, or if it’s leading us into a trap.

Patch

Patch

We’re through. Keep watch.

Kaelith stops just inside the threshold, eyes on the sword and then on Patch’s hand. The stone behind them gives a final shiver, and the arch’s glow steadies into a hard, icy sheen.

Ahead, the passage is open at last, but the chamber has changed behind them, the way home no longer feeling entirely the same.

I ask Kaelith for his read on this place

Patch

Patch

Kaelith, what do you make of this place?

His answer comes after a short look around the chamber, the draft tugging at his cloak. The old stone walls seem to listen with them.

Kaelith

Kaelith

It feels older than the tunnels above, and meaner. Built to keep something in, or keep people out.

The sword in Patch’s grip gives a thin, hungry pulse, and the burn in her palm answers with a sting. Dust skims across the floor toward the open arch.

Kaelith

Kaelith

If you’re asking whether I trust the blade, I don’t. If you’re asking whether I trust you, I’m still here.

He glances at her hand, then away, jaw set like he has already chosen his share of the risk. The chamber stays quiet, waiting on Patch’s next move.
