Moonlight spills into a pine clearing ringed by bodies in bandit colors. Patch slips from the trees, dagger low, lockpicks cold in her palm.
At the center stands a caravan guard in a torn cloak, one hand over a sword planted in the earth. Black mist coils from the blade like breath in winter.
Patch freezes as the air turns heavy. The mist curls around her boots, tasting of ash and iron.

Kaelith
There you are. I wondered when the last piece would walk in.
He lifts his head. His eyes burn with a pale, чуж? No, cold light, fixed on Patch as if he has named her long before tonight.

Kaelith
Come closer, thief. The sword has been waiting for your touch.
The mist thickens, and somewhere beneath it, the blade gives a low, hungry hum. Patch has one clear path, the guard, the sword, or the darkened edge of the clearing.

Disrupt the guard's ritual
“I dart into the shadows to circle behind him.”
FAILURE (Good Stealth, rolled -1)

Patch slides into the black seam between two pines, but the mist clings to her boots and betrays the shift of her weight.
The guard’s head turns at once. His gaze tracks the disturbance, not the trees, and his hand tightens on the sword hilt.
Patch reaches the shadow behind him anyway, only to find the ground there scored with a fresh ring of runes, faint and waiting.
The black mist pulls toward that circle as if it recognizes her, thinning at the edges where she passes.

Kaelith
Too late. The blade already knows you.
For one breath, Patch sees it, the sword is not anchored to the dirt at all. It is anchored to the mark, and the mark is only partly awake.
The ring gives Patch a choice, cross it and risk the binding, or break the pattern before the guard can finish it.
“I break the rune circle”
SUCCESS (Great Thievery, rolled -1)

Patch slips a blade of light under the nearest rune and scrapes it free. The circle gutters, one segment breaking into ash-like sparks.
The black mist jerks off course, snarling into the gap she cuts instead of sinking cleanly into the mark.

Kaelith
No.
He twists toward the damage, grip tightening, but the circle is already fractured in three places.
A sharp pulse snaps through the clearing, making the pines shiver and driving a cold sting into Patch’s palm where the rune-burn bites her skin.
The sword’s pull weakens at once, and the guard looks up with fresh alarm, suddenly needing Patch more than the blade.

Escape the guard's clearing
“Is the guard still able to finish the binding?”
NO (Unlikely, rolled 80)
The guard stares at the severed lines of the circle, his hands trembling as the residual magic dissipates into the damp earth. The binding ritual fails to take hold, leaving the sword inert and the guard powerless to complete his task.
“I snatch the inert sword before the guard can recover.”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -1)

Patch lunges in and snatches the inert sword from the earth before the guard can recover his balance.
The hilt bites her burned palm, and she hisses as fresh sting flashes up her hand.

Kaelith
Give that back.
He takes a stumbling step after her, too late to stop the theft.

Kaelith
No, not now... not after all this.
The sword gives no mist now, only cold weight in Patch's grip, while the clearing feels suddenly smaller around them.

Inert sword
“I back away with the sword”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -1)

Patch backs away with the sword held low, putting a few careful paces between herself and the guard. Her burned hand throbs around the hilt, and the dead rune circle lies between them like a scar in the dirt.

Kaelith
Stop. Just... stop with the blade.
He does not rush her. He plants his boots and lifts empty hands, breathing hard, eyes fixed on the weapon instead of her face.

Kaelith
If she leaves with it, everything falls apart.
Patch reaches the edge of the broken circle, and the clearing opens behind her, thin pine trunks spacing the way out.

Kaelith
You do not understand what that sword is for.
His voice shakes on the last word, not with anger but with fear, and that fear gives Patch a clean path away, for now.
“I keep backing toward the trees”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -2)

Patch keeps moving, slow and steady, sword low at her side. The broken ring falls behind her boots, and the pines ahead start to close around her like a narrow lane.
Her burned palm slips on the hilt, and she tightens her grip hard enough to sting. The blade stays hers, but the pain pricks a sharp trail up her arm.

Kaelith
Wait. Do not take another step.
He does not charge. He leans forward instead, staring past Patch toward the trees, as if measuring how much ground he has already lost.

Kaelith
If you go, I am left with nothing.

Patch
The trees are within reach.
Patch reaches the first trunks and slips among the shadows there, clear of the circle at last. Behind her, the guard stays planted in the dirt, empty-handed and tense, while the sword’s dead weight drags at her sore hand.
