Two weeks later, Ares reaches Corinth under a traveler’s cloak. Salt wind rolls off the harbors, and the streets thrum with hammers, cattle cries, and the bright noise of the coming Isthmian Games.

He moves with the crowd toward the Spring of Peirene. Merchants haggle over oil, wine, and бронze; athletes stride past with oiled shoulders and laurel in their hair.

Near the spring, King Sisyphus holds court on a low stone dais, listening with a half-smile that never reaches his eyes. His gaze keeps sliding over every face, weighing each one.

Ares

Ares

He looks like a man counting exits.

Ares stops within the press of bodies, cloak plain, posture careful. Nobody turns the secret god into a spectacle here, not yet.

Sisyphus’s attention flicks toward the newcomer as if he senses the weight beneath the cloth. The king’s fingers rest on the spring stone, and he gestures for the nearest servant to quiet the crowd.

I pull my cloak tighter and blend into the shadows of the spring.

Ares tightens the cloak at his throat and sinks deeper beside the spring, but the fabric catches on his shoulder and bunches out, making him look exactly like a man trying not to be seen.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

That one is not local.

Sisyphus does not point, but his stare narrows by a hair. He keeps speaking to the servant at his elbow, yet his attention stays pinned on the shadow by the water.

Ares

Ares

The spring’s stone lip throws a thin band of shade behind the crowd.

Ares shifts once, low and careful, and the shadow gives him a slimmer profile. In the wet reflection under the basin, he catches Sisyphus’s hands, not his face, and sees the king’s fingers tapping a private rhythm against the stone.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

You there. Traveler. Step where I can see you.

The nearest shoppers turn at the sound. One jostled jar rolls to a stop at Ares’s feet, and the whole ring of noise tightens around him.

I step out and face Sisyphus

Ares steps out of the shadow line and lets the cloak fall open just enough to stop hiding him. The springlight catches his face, and the crowd’s murmur thins around him.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

There. I knew you were no mere traveler.

Sisyphus turns fully from the stone, measuring Ares with a ruler-straight stare, while his fingers stop that private tapping on the basin.

Ares

Ares

He has the look of a man counting outcomes before anyone speaks.

A jar-toter freezes mid-step, and nearby shoppers drift back, giving the king a wider circle without being told. The clay jar at Ares’s feet sits like a dropped warning.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

Say what you came for, or tell me why you thought hiding would serve you.

The market holds its breath. Sisyphus waits in plain view, patient and wary, as if the next word will decide whether this remains a conversation or becomes a scene.

I tell Sisyphus a half-truth and feed into his ego. “My apologies, King Sisyphus. I am but a humble traveler from Thrace, eager to see if the tales of your legendary cunning do you justice.”

Ares

My apologies, King Sisyphus. I am but a humble traveler from Thrace, eager to see if the tales of your legendary cunning do you justice.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

Thrace, is it? That land sends hard men and harder lies. Still, you flatter wisely.

Sisyphus’s mouth tilts by a hair, not quite a smile, as he studies Ares’s face for the seam in the story. The market stays hushed around the spring.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

A traveler does not stand that still. But a man who knows how to bow his pride might still be useful.

Ares keeps the cloak loose and the lie smooth. The black ribbon at his wrist stays hidden beneath the fold of fabric while Sisyphus’s gaze slides over him and finds nothing to seize.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

If you came for my fame, then watch closely. Men speak of my wit because they fear what it costs them.

He turns one palm toward the spring, inviting an audience without ever looking away from Ares. The clay jar near the basin remains untouched, forgotten in the quiet.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

Come then, traveler from Thrace. Tell me what tale brought you to my court.

I draw on what Zeus said about Sisyphus earlier to try to come up with a story I supposedly overheard from local gossip.

Ares

I heard at the taverns of Thrace that you once cheated a river god’s toll with nothing but a coin, a grin, and a borrowed corpse. They say Corinth repeats that story because no one can decide whether it is praise or warning.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

A fair tale for a market crowd. A little crude, but serviceable.

The words cost Ares a fragment of the disguise, not the mask itself. The cloak shifts at his wrist, and the hidden black ribbon gives one cold tug beneath the fabric, as if it dislikes being made part of a story.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

You speak like a man repeating a rumor he half-believes. Good. Belief makes listeners careless.

Sisyphus steps down one stone from the dais, studying Ares as if he is weighing a tool, not a guest. Behind him, the spring keeps its soft murmur, and the jar by the basin sits untouched in the dust.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

Tell me, traveler, did Thrace send you to admire my wit, or to see what kind of man survives by it?

I ask what kind of man survives by wit

Ares

What kind of man survives by wit?

The question lands softly, but it changes the air. Ares keeps his cloak closed and his face still, giving Sisyphus only enough to answer.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

A man who notices what others miss. A man who lets them think they are ahead.

Sisyphus straightens on the stone step, amused now for real, one hand resting near the rail of the dais as he studies Ares like a puzzle that has finally agreed to speak.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

No rustic traveler asks that cleanly without a reason.

Behind him, the spring murmurs on. The jar by the basin sits in plain sight, and the market ring holds its breath, waiting for the next move.

I keep my face hidden and study his hands

SUCCESS (Mediocre Perception, rolled +0)

Ares keeps his hood low and lets his eyes drop to Sisyphus’s hands. One thumb taps the rail in a slow, deliberate rhythm, while the other hand stays loose, too loose, like a man counting possibilities instead of coins.

Ares

Ares

His fingers are steady. No lie shakes them.

The king shifts his weight, and Ares catches the faintest mark on his knuckle, a fresh scrape half-hidden by dust. Not a warrior’s wound, more like someone who has been prying at stone or testing a sealed edge.

Sisyphus’s gaze stays on Ares’s face, but his mouth curls as if he already knows the answer. He has seen the glance, not the study, and now he is choosing not to name it.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

You look where the work is done, not where the men talk about it.

The crowd tightens its ring by a step. The spring keeps murmuring. Under Ares’s sleeve, the black ribbon gives one cold pulse, as if it dislikes being noticed in a place full of eyes.
