Ares lunges for the spring basin, one hand outstretched as the water detonates upward in a scalding white roar. Cobblestones vanish under the flood, and the market square turns into a panicked slope of slick stone.

Sisyphus stumbles back onto a higher step, eyes wide, then sharpens with cold calculation as he watches the water twist and gather itself. Merope grabs at the edge of a cart, steadying herself against the spray.

This is no accident. Something here is answering us.

The spring swells again, not just flooding but reaching, a spinning wall of steam and current that surges toward the gathered gods like a living hand.

If it takes the basin, it takes the evidence with it.

The crowd scatters to the market edge as the basin cracks and the water hisses through the gap, tugging at loose cloth, broken fruit, and the clay jar near Ares' feet.

Ares drives his palm into the cracked stone, and the basin answers with a dull shudder. The scalding surge buckles inward, forced down and back, water hammering the broken rim instead of spilling wide.

Steam bursts up in a white sheet, then thins. The flood loses its wild reach and begins to circle the basin, churning tight against the fracture.

That worked. Or it just bought us a breath.

Hold it there. Do not let the pressure break loose again.

Merope hauls the cart farther from the slick edge, eyes fixed on the water as it settles into a contained boil. The market runner stares from the safety of the square, frozen between fear and relief.

The basin is still cracked.

Sisyphus leans forward on his step, gaze sharp over the steam. The fresh scrape on his knuckle catches the light as he points toward the rim, where the flow is narrowing but not yet still.
